With the launch of Mario VS Donkey Kong Mini Land Mayhem, DS gets its first eco-box. They have the recycle symbol like the 360/Wii/PS3 boxes and remove the GBA cartridge storage slot.
Yeah..it's all fine and dandy to be green but hopefully next gen they just get...smaller boxes. This would be preferable to flimsy ones that break before I get home. I can't take my games around in their boxes anymore with the advent of eco boxes because they all get mashed/ripped etc.
What are your thoughts? Proud to see Nintendo improving their company image helping the environment? Disappointed to see less durable cases?
In other news, this is the first DS game to have the Super Guide, apparently.
I'm not so bothered about an eco-friendly DS case as DS cards are much harder to damage than discs, but to have large sections of a disc's surface without hard plastic protecting them seems very daft to me. Thankfully, as far as I know these eco-friendly cases aren't used here in the UK.
Also, it seems a bit odd to call that DS case "eco-friendly" when for the size of a DS card the case could potentially be about 1/4 of the size it is now!
The case are as big as the manual, maybe... smaller manuals?
Or digital manuals like downloadable games. A lot of people don't even read the manuals anyway, and I could store a lot more games on my DS shelf if they had tiny cases! I suppose another reason that the cases are still big might be for promotion. If a tiny case is on a shelf its not as visible and you can't fit as much writing on it.
Yeah, it's the eco-friendly DVD cases that really bother me, because they leave the disc exposed. The first DVD I bought that came in one of those cases arrived in the mail with a huge slash mark across the back of the case that just narrowly missed the disc, so I wasn't too happy when my most recent Wii game came in one of those cases.
Yeah I have MHT and Goldeneye and when I got them they had those awful cases. They're all flimsy and just don't feel right. Think about it, how much good do they really do?
So you guys are ok with destroying the planet, as long as you don't have to put any effort into protecting your discs.
Good to know.

If a million units are shipped with eco-friendly packaging, rather than regular packaging?
No no, but seriosly, eco cases are a nice idea, maybe they can also make them a little smaller, but of course, if the disks get broken because of the eco case (I think these can't happend) there is a problem.

yes, because some of us really don't like our games winding up scratched thanks to a flimsy box, that means we're totally down with the eventual destruction of the planet. burn, earth, burn!

Most people don't even keep the boxes. They take up way too much space and have lousy portability. DSes should just come with Altoid boxes, or something else thats equally convenient, and the manuals should just be on the carts. That way the carts don't even need to be sold in big plastic boxes, just some cardboard inserts or what have you. That's way more eco-friendly if you ask me.
@mickeymac: i would totes be down with altoid-sized boxes for DS games. they'd probably be sturdier thanks to their smaller size, and i'd be able to put more of them on my shelf :3

Just to be nitpicky, he doesn't necessarily have the game. He got the picture from GoNintendo.
Anyway, I wish that instead of gimping the cases, how about they just stop printing all the extra copies of shovelware that never sells?
E: Oh shoot, I didn't even see that they stripped the GBA holder. I actually used that, mostly with GBA games that were related to the DS game. I was planning on keeping MvsDK 1 in MLM, but I don't want it sliding around.
I never really use the boxes anyways, lol. I have one of those colored plastic container things that holds like 4 of the games, I just save the box for when I wanna take the game back. xD

We can keep going with this, if you like, but here's the (quite factual) breakdown: Whatever personal inconvience it might cause you (and I'm very sorry that it does), digital distribution > eco friendly boxes > normal boxes. From the earth's perspective, and all that.
Digital distribution can kiss my tailfeathers! I like selling mah games back!
Well, no system is perfect
I do prefer looking after the environment wherever possible. Digital distribution is one good one, but failing that, I'm willing to take a little more care of my games if that means they're kept in eco-friendly boxes.
naah, i'm not interested in going anywhere with it. i just didn't appreciate the sweeping generalization and wanted to point out the utter lack of gray area it represented.

I would also prefer Downloadable 3DS games, since it fits with the portability of the system. That's why I download most of my PSP games. Conveniently, it also uses less resources and saves developers money, and unlike Eco boxes, the savings are actually transfered to us, the consumers.
I still think my first idea would be a good way to meet people halfway for those who prefer to buy, sell, trade, and borrow physical media, though.
