This looks like a fun little game, and I am quite interested in it. How is it?

Just let it happen.

I gave this game a shot. It is an action game that relies on the direction pad and the A button. You are this star orb thing that needs to make it to the top goal and you do that by launching yourself up and then trying to grab onto an object to help you climb. There are power-ups as well as things you do not want to hit, else you will lose a heart. It is not bad for the price point, but will probably not stay too long in my regular rotation.

I took a chance on this one, mostly because it was made by Nintendo Anyway, you play as Aura Aura, a little star that wishes to get high in the sky, and jump from point to point using a grapple beam type of thing to get higher and higher. Along the way are enemies which will take a health point if yoou come into contact with them, health packs to regain health, and items to extend the reach of your grapple. I'm sure there are a few other things scattered around but I've only seen up to level 2.

The game has 2 main modes. They are Score Attack and Endless. In Score Attack, you play through stages 1-10 trying to achieve the highest score possible(there are local leaderboards for all stages). In endless mode you simply try to get as high up as you can inside a time limit. The sound is niether great nor terrible. Just very light and easy on the ears. The graphics are rather good with 3-Dish backdrops that look very nice and very colorful, detailed sprite work.

Also included in this game are medals to try and achieve. These are Achievement-esque things(only better cuz they're Nintendo) and act to give the game some replay value. They range from "don't get hit in stage 10" to "find the hidden medal in endless mode. From what I saw, there were approximately 30 medals to gather in all.

Overall this is a very solid release and easy to tell that it was made by Nintendo by the obvious layer of polish put on it. I would say that it is the best 200 point title out there and has the longest legs too. Very happy I took a chance on this one. You should too! It's only 2 bucks.

Is it touch-control based?

Just let it happen.

No, Just buttons. The A button is for jumping, Control pad for aiming where you jump, and the X button to look around you. It's rather unfortunate because this game seems to lend itself very well to touch controls. Not that the buttons don't do the job, they work great.

Is it similar to Doodlejump? Here is a video if you haven't played Doodlejump.

Ummmmm....not really. The only similarity I can see is that they both have you constantly going higher up. In my opinion, this "Doodlejump" looks shallow and un-fun. The main difference would be that in Aura, in order to progress higher up, you jump off the point you're on with A and press it again to grapple out in whatever direction you're facing. Aura seems like it has a TON more depth than that app.

I'm on the fence about this one ... what games on DSiWare would you say this is closest to?

Exactly.

"What games on DSiWare would you say this is closest to?"

um... Paper Airplane Chase with a grappling hook?

What it reminds me the most of is those maze mini-games games where if you hit a wall you go back to the start (in this case you only lose health and hook length though). The pace is slow, but you make lots of dashes. You spend a lot of time waiting for obstacles to go by. You cross your fingers while attempting to travel from point A to point B. The idea was to add some platforming elements. There's a lot of details to keep it interesting, but the core gameplay design wasn't taken to the higher level that it could have been.

And I've only played a few minutes, but it looks like an excellent game for showing off high scores. Seems like it'd be pretty hard to come back to this game if you spent a couple months away from it.

Right now I'd say it's the best 200 point DSiWare game on the service. It's totally worth it.

Yeah this is definitely a good one... nice tight design and fun to play!

Yeah, I'm really enjoying this game. It gets pretty intense on levels 9 and 10 on score attack. I think NST should make more games starring Aura-Aura and make a DSiWare mini-franchise. Seems perfect for the downloadable format.

I just downloaded it, and I must agree, it's great. Really easy to learn and play, yet the levels are getting harder and it's fun + addictive. The 30 achievements, I imagine, will keep my busy for a while, and Endless mode is quite enjoyable as well. I'd say it's a good pick-up-and-play game

Re: Replay
The ten score attack levels can be beaten in under an hour by a new player, so this is definitely designed for replayability if you want to get lots of hours out of this. Getting S rank scores in each stage should be an interesting challenge. The medals such as get 175,000 points in levels 1,2,3 combined and climb 5000m without using the same hook twice are interesting ideas. After all that, you can still go back and get higher scores --especially in the marathon level if you have time for it-- and there's also endless.

Edit: And dying in this game is usually really frustrating. When you're not used to the game, there's a lot of parts where you'll go from full health to dead in under five seconds

I just got it, and I love it! It's definitely one of the best values on the service. It reminds me of doodlejump because of its addictiveness. I love falling from the top of the level, then latching onto a hook at the last second.
