...I couldn't find a topic for this that wasn't super old...
Just thought I'd crate a discussion thread for the GBC game, in case I'm not the only one who's playing through the original to get ready for Pirate's Curse and Half-Genie Hero. I'll leave some impressions in another post.
Anyways, I started playing through this on VC, and I'm actually pretty impressed with it now. Graphics are great with loads of detail in the sprites and animation, and I still can't believe this music ever came out of the GBC's speaker. The levels are big and explorable, rife with stuff to collect (although at this point I can't get any of it), and the level design is good with lots of detail, some clever puzzles, and unique enemies, although they seriously need more save points and one-ups. I guess you're supposed to grind for money to buy vials, but who wants to do that? They're expensive, and you have better things to buy.
Actually...my only complaint is how poor this game is as a portable game. The levels are huge (like, I spent at least 20 minutes in just one dungeon, and I'm only 2/3rds through it...I'm on my last life and my last save point is back in town), and sometimes require backtracking, too. Like I said, there's very few save points, so unless you bring some candy (which only warps you back to town...), if I was playing this on the GBC, I'd need at least an hour to dedicate to it, and god help me if my battery was running low...
But since I'm playing it on the 3DS VC, I have Restore Points, Temp-saves, and Sleep mode, so I'm good. I just hope I don't burn out after this game, it seems like it'll be a long one.
I played it back in June, so I have no interest in replaying something I beat only a few months ago. Anyways, it's not that long. Depending on how much optional collectibles you go after, it should only take around 8-10 hours for a first playthrough.

That's...pretty long for a game boy platformer...
Yes, but not that long in general.
Depends on your standards? Like, I only have 2, maybe 3 days (if I'm lucky) in any week to play games, so this'll take a couple weeks to get through...

Yeah, game length in general is pretty subjective. I usually play handheld games in between doing other things, so I don't really have trouble finding time to play them.
Anyways, back to the actual topic. Shantae's a pretty good game...and that's really all I have to say about it.

Yeah, I'll be doing a playthrough over the next while too, along with Risky's Revenge, and then probably pick up Pirate's Curse for Wii U. Like you though, I don't have much time I can set aside for gaming. Brought my 3DS to work tonight though. Maybe I'll fire it up once I finish my paperwork.
I'm a little over halfway through the game now. Just got my first Talisman (elephant stomp), and reached a second heart container. I'm off to some mountain now, but after I track down the Zombie caravan again so I can deliver the 4th Squid there.
I'm actually nearing the endgame already. Powered through some of the more tedious stuff during my commute. I just gotta go find the last Firefly now before I go face Risky. Only problem is...I apparently found all of them at one point. Now I can't seem to figure out which one I'm missing on this save...I got 4 more areas to check, too, and I'm starting to get really annoyed by the day/night system in this game.
Just Completed Shantae! It was a fun ride. Maybe not fantastic, but I greatly enjoyed my time. Luckily the first place I checked for the last Firefly was it. I'm a bit Shantae'd out right now, though - it took me over 16 hours to complete it. Told you it'd be long...
Anyways, I'll start Risky's Revenge on Monday, maybe Tuesday.
This is probably my favorite GBC title. The quality of the sprites and music are unreal, considering the platform it was on. My only real complaint is the tedious amount of backtracking you have to do, but it does help to make this game feel more like a quest, as opposed to a series of levels and dungeons you explore.
It took me a while to get through it the first time, but it's actually pretty easy to get through in a single day when you know what you're doing.
