Oh yeah and my recent addition to "awesomely fun local multiplayer games" is the INDIE game (I love indie games) BROFORCE. It's in open testing stage at the moment, you can download a demo and play it with controllers on your PC. Go google for it and play it with up to 3 of your friends on one screen. It's pure awesome and I wish it would (or something similar) one day come to 3DS with online multiplayer option. Perfect game! (especially funny if you're born between 1980 and 1990).

Top 5 Indies I'd recommend you try: #1 Lovecraft's Untold Stories, #2 Moonlighter, #3 Hotline Miami, #4 Inside, #5 Into the Breach.

JRPG's. Of my ten favourite games ever, eight of them are JRPG's. Oh and visual novels! Virtue's Last Reward and 999 occupy the other two spots in my top ten.
Fighting
Why? It's easy to learn, hard to master. There isn't any leveling, equips, buffs, potions, gear or whatever. Your character improves with your skill and knowledge of the game.
Other than that, RPG (complete opposite of fighting, I know lol), Adventure, Survival, Sandbox, Platformer... There's a lot more but I'm too lazy to type, hahaha.
Mostly JRPG's and Platformers.
Rougelikes, Dungeon Crawlers, Strategy and Puzzle games in more specific cases.
FPS', Fighting and Racing games usually never.
