Topic: Should I buy New 3DS?

Hi, I visit this site often and thought you guys could help. I'm considering getting a New 3DS, and am already an owner of the original 3DS (almost five years). I rarely play it and haven't bought a game for it since February, which I hardly touched. I'm definitely getting a NX next year, which is rumored to be a console/handheld hybrid, which is making me just want to save money for that. On the other hand, I would be interested in a New 3DS, as I would be more confident in it since my current 3DS has gotten old and worn-down. I'm especially waiting for a price cut on the New 3DS, but I'm not sure when that'll be. What would you guys recommend?

I assume you mean you're getting an NX next year and not next month, unless you're particularly well connected

I would suggest you fire up your existing 3DS for now if it still works ok. If you're worried about it failing then make backups of the SD card on a PC. But if you're really saving for NX then it does seem a bit daft to splash out on a N3DS this late in the game when you already own a 3DS that you're not using.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

I got a New 3DS XL recently, but this was when we were pretty sure the NX was a Home Console. I was worried new games, like Pokemon Sun & Moon and Metroid Prime Federation Force, wouldn't run correctly on the older 3DSs, kinda like Hyrule Warriors Legends. I am still hoping the NX isn't a portable system, but if it is I might have to wait on it to make my N3DS XL "worthwhile." Not sure if this helped you, but just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Just think about how likely you are to get the NX at launch or if you are going to wait a year or so

@DefHalan I want to get it around the time it launches. I guess if I got a New 3DS, I would have to worry about making my purchase worthwhile especially with the NX coming out so soon. I'm just worried Nintendo will reveal info on the NX soon and it will be a console/handheld hybrid as predicted.

@Rare_Dachshund you can always wait and see. I got my New 3DS XL on sale and traded in my Wife's old 3DS, so we only spent about $200 for 2 systems. Nintendo did just announce the New 3DS (not XL) for NA $150. That might be an option if you don't want to wait. Is there a reason you are thinking of getting a New 3DS? It doesn't seem like there are particular games you want to play or anything. May not be worth it.

If your current 3DS is still in good working order, I'd say stick with it. There are almost no New 3DS exclusives, and even Nintendo's own games aren't taking advantage of the New 3DS' improved CPU (Fire Emblem Fates still has the same stupid frame rate fluctuations as Awakening!).

If you must get a New 3DS due to wear and tear, then by all means. I doubt that it will be getting a price cut anytime soon. At least not until early next year prior to the launch of the NX or until the Christmas period.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

You can do what I did- upgrade from old 3DS to the NEW 3DS XL. that way you upgrade in almost every way- you get a stronger system, larger screens, option for specipic games like xenoblade chronicles 3D (which you of course can get with the normal new 3DS) and overall can exprience higher level of gaming. I love my new 3ds xl, and who knows, maybe it will do the same for you and light that passion for handheld gaming when you hold it in your hands and play it for the first time.
And what kind of games do you like? are there certain games you have heard of or considered getting? I can tell you that even playing older games thats out for several years are great to re play on the big screens. and the amount of content you can get from games, both for 3DS and for the DS, is insane

@DefHalan I heard about that (the SM3DL bundle). I think that's what really made me ask this question and consider whether I really want it or not. But I guess you're right - so-called "New 3DS exclusives" have been rather lackluster so far.

@Rare_Dachshund The New 3DS doesn't have many exclusives but it does run certain games better. (Hyrule Warriors Legends, Smash Bros) It also has more Stable 3D, which has lead to me using 3D on my New 3DS more than I ever did on my old 3DS. There are benefits, but it really comes down to personal taste. Also, you can always wait for NX news, there is always a chance you won't want it or it won't be a portable system or something lol

@VoltageX I've just always liked the kinds of games Nintendo produces - simple action games like Mario and Zelda. And I like handhelds because I'm usually on the move and play in shorter bursts. Mobile games are ok bit just aren't "enough" I guess. I am also savvy when it comes to emulating old games, both on my computer and phone. I actually have a lot of 3DS games made 2011 through 2014, but after that, I kind of started to slow down.

@Rare_Dachshund There are more "massive" games you can play on the 3DS that for me, personally, were somewhat satisfing as much as story and gameplay are concerned. take for example games like tales of the abyss, heroes of ruin, devil suirvivor overlocked and ghost recon shadow wars- they just overflow with content and you can play with the difficulty level in some of them to your tastes

Well, if you are not really using it too much then you have to think it througj if its worth getting at all. Eaiting for a price cut doesnt seem to be the problem as you are not really using it that much - so its not an urgent matter.

Personally I own a 2DS with a huge number of ds and 3 ds games. I will definitely buy two more handheld with time

Rare_Dachshund

@Andrzej777 Well, if I get a New 3DS, I would plan on using it as often as I did my current 3DS, but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean I will.

One game never played, and your 3ds is worn out and old. xd

Probably misread something in there.

You are what you eat from your head to your feet.

About the only major pro of the N3DS in my opinion is the smaller variant is a heck more comfortable to hold than the original variant.

The better battery, slightly faster loading, c-nub and 3D tracking are just nice extras. Oh and the plates are nice too.

I have bought several 3DSs and XLs for the family, but I own just one N3DS XL, which is mine. The nub has been useless to me so far. Having handy Amiibo support is also a neat perk.

So far the main reason I've been glad to own the N3DS, IMHO, has been Binding of Isaac.

It's also nice to be able to play Xenoblade Chronicles, and some SNES games such as Earthbound and Super Metroid that are currently only available for the N3DS.

i got one bc it came down to $175 on amazon, then i got a $30 credit on Prime Day. Haven't played it much, but it's a nice upgrade.. not sure i would pay full price. i got it bc i have so many games and my current 3ds is three years old. I want one for when my old one goes out of comission.

I never had the original 3DS, but I did trade me WiiU for a New 3DS. I'm very happy with it! The only reason I don't play it these days is because I can't afford any games for it:(

I'd say, trade in your dusty old 3DS to get credit to knock off some $ for the New 3DS!

I would also suggest getting a 2DS. They're a whole lot cheaper, it's a comfortable fit, and if you don't care about the 3D feature, it's way better:)

I kinda wish I had one...
