Oh my gosh. I just realized what the new region is based off of. It's based off of Hawaii.
1. Resort Hotel-like structure
2. Tropical Trees
3. The strange souvenir you get from that guy in Kalos when he talks about a new region that isn't Kalos or any other region is VERY Tiki-like. It's a freaking Tiki. He also said that we'd see that new region soon, cementing this new region as the one he was probably talking about.

Like how Unova had a big desert and was based on the Saha.. oh.. err.. New York...
@DarthNocturnal: Not more than Kalos was based on Europe and Kanto on Asia. It's like the Zelda timeline, it doesn't really matter. They pick a region, but don't really care about its geography, so it's nearly impossible to tell from the Direct alone where the region is based on. There's usually a handful of Pokémon that are based on that region as well, but again, many aren't. It's not as if it matters where the region is based on anyway...
@Meowpheel: I feel like someone told you that to spread gleeful hate. Besides in real life, on the map, the location would be basically where the city is in the game anyway. The desert.... would be like a sideways Central Park or parts of the ghetto :/ Which isn't much of a better answer in the latter.
Anyway, I think we all agree that a Pokemon game set in a constant stream of cities without variation and natural places in between would be very boring. So that's why they add these weird out of place environments.
Pretty much. Sure each region has little variations and other things from their real world counterparts, but they also take a lot of inspiration for architecture and environments from those real world inspirations. Kalos was inspired by France, Kanto was inspired by, well, the Kanto region. I mean, Japan doesn't have any deserts but Hoenn does, that doesn't negate any of the other things that it DOES take from the specific region of Japan it's based off of though.
You may want to watch the official Pokemon stream, there's a 30 minute segment at 5:30pm eastern (10:30pm UK) about the future of Pokemon. Maybe that will contain the first Sun and Moon gameplay.
Even if there was no gameplay shown (at least we got language options, right?... riiight?), I'm very excited for Sun and Moon. I can't help but feel like all regions will come together in this game (so that means little to no new Pokemon). Even if it's a 3DS game, the grand scale of travelling to all the regions is a big step in the direction towards essentially what would be a Pokemon MMO. It'd be nice if that was actually the case and it was on the Wii U, but I guess small steps at a time.
Of course, I could be wrong and Sun/Moon will just be a new region with a 100 new Pokemon and such. I really wonder why nothing was said about the gameplay in the Direct....
God first.

@DarthNocturnal: yes, from the website "Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are coming out for systems in the Nintendo 3DS family in holiday 2016, with a new world, new Pokémon, and new adventures to discover!", so it has been confirmed to be a new generation.
Anyway, I'm really happy about the announcement, even if we don't have so much information we know it will be out in 2016, so they'll show us new Pokémon in these days, maybe during the streaming or during a Nintendo Direct or even on CoroCoro.
