Topic: New to video games, is the 3ds right for me?

Well, I am re-new. I played video games as a kid in then80's and 90's. The last system I had was a superNES and sega genesis. My brother got a play station and I played twisted metal and a few other games with him after that and not a thing since.

I downloaded clash of clans and have been obsessively playing that. My thought I would like a system to play on the go. I think I want the new 3ds xl, but am not sure. I have Ben playing a Sony vita, the graphics are great, the size of the device is great, but the games are nowhere to be found.

I've been playing final fantasy x and is is so cheesy it's almost unplayable. The rest seem to be of the type where I am a character that walks around doin missions, like borderlands two or assassins creed, which are fun and then get a little boring.

I remember liking Zelda and super Mario brothers and that sort of thing so maybe I would be better off with Nintendo. The only thing that scares me off is that 99% of the titles look like they are for little kids, like not even teenagers, but like under ten years old. Lego and Pokemon and Barbie and stuff.

Any advice?

If you are that concerned with petty things like how people view you based on games you play, the 3DS might not be for you. Non-gaming adults (yourself included) think the 3DS is just a 10-year-old's plaything. Good heavens, they might give you The Stare of Disappointment™ as they witness a fully-blown adult playing* on said toy.

*playing Metal Gear Solid.

Just by taking a quick look at Metacritic's list of all-time highest rated 3DS games, there's plenty that are obviously not "for 10 year olds". All 3 3DS Zelda games, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Virtue's Last Reward, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, Street Fighter IV, Bravely Default, Super Smash Bros., Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker, Etrian Odyssey IV, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Persona Q, Retro City Rampage DX.

I'll stop there. That's 15 out of the top 30 3DS games that do not immediately appear to be "for children". There's plenty more to find as well if you stop concerning yourself with how others view you. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a relaxing game you can play in short bursts to wind down. Pushmo and Crashmo are great puzzle games that ramp up in difficulty fast; if there's a 10 year old that can solve all of them, let MENSA know. Mario Kart 7 is great fun. Kid Icarus: Uprising is a third-person-shooter/on-rails-flight-shooter thing with hilarious characters and a story that reminds me of 90's era cartoons.

There are plenty of games for anyone on the 3DS you just have to look through the library of games, which is insanely expansive. If you really like Zelda, then you've got A Link Between Worlds, Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, and anything you might be able to find on the virtual console in the eshop. If you like Mario, Super Mario 3D Land was a great game and plenty of fun to complete. There are tons of other amazing titles to choose from too. Fire Emblem Awakening for something tactical, Bravely Default for RPGs, Smash Bros for a fighting game, Kid Icarus Uprising for a shooter..you're bound to find something you like, I say go for it.

If you want a handheld, 3DS is the way to go. Vita may be good(don't know, never played it), but it's library is sparse. As for the titles, you're wrong if you think 99% of the titles are for kids. You may not like Pokemon or Lego, but there are a ton of games out there. Search up a top list of 3DS and you'll find a lot that aren't for kids. There are a ton of games you may like from Animal Crossing to Zelda.

I never said I was scared of how people would view me, I said I was concerned the games were mostly for kids, so, I don't care what people think, I just don't want to invest in a system that is focused for little kids,

You've got to admit if you go to your local video games seller, the case looks very kiddish.

Case? What case? If you mean bundles, there are bundles for kids, and those for teens and older. Obviously a Pokemon or Mario bundle will look a bit kiddish, but a Xenoblade or Fire Emblem bundle will look cool.

Oh, I meant a casual viewing of the case that holds the games at say Walmart, target or toys r us, the glass case they keep the games in. A lot of the titles that popped out at me on an initial walk by were kids games. Where say, if you walk by the play station four case they games covers are more adult looking. That's all.

The system looks great, I just wanted to make sure there were plenty of adult titles too. Don't get me wrong, I don't feel the need for a bloody head or something gory on the cover of a game, but also not a pink Barbie,

I think you should take a look at the games on Youtube or read something on a gaming site and then decide whether you think they are suitable for you. I'll make a small list of titles I think you could enjoy:
The Legend of Zelda (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, A Link Between Worlds)
Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater (the framerate is pretty bad, but the game is great)
Resident Evil: Revelations
Fire Emblem: Awakening (and the upcoming If)
Super Mario 3D Land
Super Smash Bros. For 3DS
Starfox 64 3D
Mario Kart 7
Heroes of Ruin
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Phoenix Wright Trilogy (eShop only)
Professor Layton

I could get super into telling a story but I took a break from gaming all together and the 3DS was what got me back into it. Easy to pick up, great high quality games on it, and everything is usually cheaper than other gaming systems (unless you shop last gen stuff)

Steer clear of the Vita unless you like anime based JRPGs because that's nearly all it's good for.

When you contrast Nintendo's library with the plentiful M-rated titles that seek to glorify 'killing dudes' with the most realistic, desaturated presentations possible, then ya, things will look "kiddy" with the abundance of primary colors, cartoon characters and made-up settings on Nintendo's shelf. Personally those brighter and light hearted elements make for better gameplay, at least where my interests are concerned

Like you, I'm an adult who had stopped gaming after the SNES and picked it up again next year after buying a 3DS... I'm very pleased with my 3DS and if you want a portable then yes, 3DS is the best option over the Vita... However, if portability is not a big deal for you I will recommend getting a cheap used PS3 and enjoy the great library of games you have missed and can now find for cheap

No, thanks, but I need portable. I live and cruise on a sailboat so I am always moving.

Ok, the anime jrpg titles so far are pretty bad. Final fantasy x is just ridiculous looking and the voices and characters seem like a joke. Don't get me started on the story....which is too bad, because the gameplay is ok. But Titus, really? They look so stupid.

I'm also not looking for the latest real life gory shoot fest of grand theft auto thing. Games like Zelda and Mario and metro id sound good.mmimwould probably like best, newer versions of games I used to play. There were a lot of good rpg like dragon warrior and final fantasy that were fun, and if they could make new ones of those using the latest and great technology that would be cool. Like Zelda....but better.

I was just thinking, what if instead of making a new Zelda, they made it, but they kiddied it up? They have a large selection of toys near where they sell the 3ds. I'm sure I'd like it. It sounds like it has something for everyone.

If you just got one and hadn't played any games in year, what would be the first five games you got?

SuperWiiU

Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest has about 10 games on (3)DS you can play. And there's still the possibility it's getting DQ7 & 8 too. And you can buy some of your old NES and SNES favorites as Virtual Console games. There's no good reason not to get the New3DS.

Area57

There doesn't seem to be. I just wanted to make sure, I'll look up dragon warrior right now, I didn't know it made a comeback, but there are so many ds games I guess the possibilities are endless.

How does the dual screen and 3d effect work? Is it pretty cool? Fun to play on both screens? I will have to try it out. It sounds like it could be a good idea.

Quite a good selection there. Majora's Mask in particular if you were worried about Zelda games becoming geared towards kids, which is definitely not the case with Majora's Mask. Xenoblade is a fantastic RPG with plenty to do, and I find it suits a portable console well.

Yes, I like bears.

There are no SNES games on the 3DS VC yet, actually :/

Looks great except for Mario Golf. I love the Mario Golf series, but have heard mixed things about the 3DS version. If you're into golf itself, or arcade-y games, you'll probably love it.

You might already be aware of this, but on a side note, don't dismiss RPGs just for looking Japanese. The 3DS has a lot of critically-acclaimed games you'd miss out on otherwise. Final Fantasy X (I'd say VII as well) in particular is known for having plot points that are near incomprehensible to someone who's not insanely familiar with Japanese culture and beliefs, and ends up feeling corny as a result. Games like Shin Megami Tensei, on the other hand, are very mature games (not in the ratings sense of violence/gore/sex) that take the player and the story very seriously.

Hmm, thanks. I hadn't thought of that, the fact that maybe the weird stuff with sin in final fantasy was linked to a cultural belief the Japanese have about an over reliance on technology.

The golf, I'm not sure, the ve just always like golf games as a quick pick up and play for a half hour fun games. But I don't play golf in real life.

The plot of FFX in particular draws a lot from the famous Japanese story of Susanoo and Yamata-no-Orochi. From the Final Fantasy Wiki (possible spoilers):

Susanoo (Tidus) is banished from his home in the Heavens (Dream Zanarkand) and trying to win back favor to return home. He comes to the mortal world (Spira) and comes across two earthly deities who are weeping because they have to sacrifice their daughters (summoners) to the evil Yamato-no-Orochi (Sin) to keep it from destroying their home. They wish to save their eighth daughter (Yuna) from being devoured, so Susanoo comes up with a plan that involves getting the dragon-snake drunk with wine ("Hymn of the Fayth") and killing it in its drunken state.

I'd say go ahead and stick with Mario Golf 3DS. Since you've been absent for most - if not all - the previous Mario Golf games you'd probably like it a lot more than a series veteran. Most of the mixed reviews I've seen come from people who're familiar with the series.
