I never quite got why Nintendo goes to these no name companies to make these web browsers for the 3DS and Wii U rather than the experts with years of experience. I agree with what some people have said, I'd love to something decent (maybe like Google Chrome) as the browser instead of some poorly done solution that can't even render many HTML 5 websites properly or use plugins.
Still, I guess that's one thing Microsoft does sort of well. They at least use the same browser as used for PCs on their games consoles rather than making deals with idiotic third parties with minimal experience in making a web browser.
I could stand a good browser but we need a youtube app. It would be more efficient it woould also make better competition with the Ps Vita and its flash browser. > It might be a little hard watching videos on the browser. I wish we could download any image and even music. Google chrome is needing to be transfered. To a new system.
The 3DS can do alot more than what it's doing now, but most websites don't support the features. http://neography.com/experiment/circles/solarsystem/
Only safari and google chrome are said to run this 'experiment', but the Wii U and 3DS still run it. The Wii U runs that webpage perfectly when the webpage is scaled to the screen correctly. I don't have my 3DS with me right now, but try the link. These are the
Supported Web Standards(according to wikipedia):
HTML 4.01
XHTML 1.1
CSS 1
CSS 2.1
CSS 3 (partial functionality)
DOM Levels 1-3
ECMAScript
XMLHttpRequest
Canvas Element (partial functionality)
These are better than alot of Javascript applications. So the 3DS web browser is actually pretty good, and almost equal to the power of the Xbox 360 browser.
The difference is compatibility of said features.
EDIT: Nintendo calls their compatibility with these browser features, Nintendo Web Framework.
Nintendo's focus has always been on games. Plain and simple. Web browsing, social networking, video viewing, etc is just not what they want people mainly doing with their units. Handheld or otherwise. I think the only reason they included a browser at all with this unit is because the Nintendo Zone feature relies on it.
If I need web browsing support away from home, I use my phone. I understand a lot of the 3DS ownership base is younger people who may not have a smart phone. Nintendo also realizes that parents want to be able to control what their children do on their consoles as much as possible, and access to the free and open internet makes that nearly impossible.
Guys, the only consoles Google Chrome is going to be on is the, NVidia Sheild and the OUYA. If Nintendo is going to get a better browser, it should be Puffin Mobile Web Browser. It works 5x faster than Google Chrome. Trust me, I have it on my Android Tablet.
