So I decided to get a 3DS XL. I'm super excited, but I am having a hard time finding some good RPGs for it. I allready plan on getting Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Fire Emblem Awakening, Dragon Quest VII (if they release it here), and maybe Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance, never cared to much for Kingdom Hearts but I'll try. I'm kinda picky with my RPGs. I don't much care for Final Fantasy after the first 6, and I've heard people talk about Shin Megami Tensei but i also hear that's first person and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Don't get me wrong I love FP RPGs like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Borderlands, etc... Dragon Quest IX was almost the definition of a perfect JRPG for me. Open world, optional combat not random encounters, great alchemy system, decent story, and overall a great experience. I know there's not much for the 3DS at the moment, but if you guys could recommend even DS games that would be great. Oh, and after playing only Sapphire for my GBA I want to take a chance at getting back into Pokemon. I'm looking at Heartgold/Soulsilver, Black/White/2, and we'll see about X/Y.

Not really many others aside from those...

I was actually looking for RPGs today. There are the games you mentioned and:
Unchained Blades
Sword of Hope 2(GB on VC)
Denpa Men: They Came by Wave
A couple others... There aren't that many, YET, but there's actually a section in the eShop right now specifically for RPGs. Just check out the eShop, and you should see at least 3 good ones immediately.
I personally want Unchained Blades quite a bit, which should keep you playing for a while. I haven't played Pokemon since Diamond, and I'm gonna check out X & Y, because it looks like it's finally moving forward in the series, IMO.

Tales of the Abyss - truly a great, epic JRPG. It's a high quality, lengthy game, and it rekindled my love for the genré.

PicDun 2: the Witch's Curse (eShop) - it's a simple game, but it's only $4 or $5, so it's an inexpensive way for you to get into the first person JRPGs like Etrian Odyssey (NL even gave it a 7/10).

Crimson Shroud (eShop) - it's not terribly long, but it's of a high quality, it's very unique (table top vibe), and it's only $8.

The Sword of Hope II - It's a bit oldschool, but it's pretty long for a Game Boy title, and it's only $2.

Of course, you can't go wrong with Denpa Men: they Came by Wave (which is getting a sequel soon), Legend of the River King GBC, or other titles already listed, either.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy! but apparently we'll have to wait a bit for that

The blockbusters will come. Other than Fire Emblem, I'm not too enchanted with the RPG selection so far.

EDIT - Just noticed you're looking for DS titles as well. Chrono Trigger, Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Trigger. That would be fantastic, some would say essential, starting point.

Only one I can recommend is Tales of the Abyss. It's a fantastic game.

Oh, I wasn't considering DSiWare, but I guess it might be okay (I disliked what I played of it on iOS, but I may have been doing something wrong).

Generally, from what I've heard, DSiWare hasn't really produced any good RPGs with the exceptions of Zenonia & PicDun, but most of eShop's offerings have already surpassed them in terms of quality (Crimson Shroud, Denpa Men, PicDun 2, and Unchained Blades in particular), and Zenonia can be picked up elsewhere for cheaper, so the DSiWare version probably wouldn't be the way to go on that one anyway.

If you are considering DS games, The World Ends With You ought to be good, it's considered one of the best games in DS library, and that's quite a feat. ;3 The soundtrack is amazing and the battle system is quite intuitive as well, one of the best works of Square Enix, that's for sure.

And another, Ghost Trick might be up to your plate although this one is more of puzzle-mystery kind of thing. With time travel mixed in.

Tales of the Abyss, Denpa Men, and PicDun 2 sound interesting thanks.

From DS:
-Radiant Historia
-The World Ends with You
-Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

From 3DS:
-Fire Emblem
-Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor (for 3DS)

I don't understand your reluctance on a 1st person rpg when you have already claimed that you had positive experience playing them.

Eh, PicDun 2 seems a bit repetitive, from what I've played of it. I wouldn't recommend it, at least. (if you want a good Dungeon Crawler experience, get Grimrock on PC)

Stay safe, kids: Make sure to save frequently during multiplayer, and always use a stylus!
