So I am planning way ahead and I think I am going to ask for the 3DS for Christmas this year. How much should I expect to pay? What is available in the eshop?

TIA

Well if you're getting it for Christmas, you should expect to pay nothing.

The eShop has most retail games released since the beginning of 2013, but is more hit and miss for games older than that. Tecmo Koei and Bandai Namco both don't have their games on the eShop, which is a sad.

Well, if you're like me you'll be spending plenty of cash there. Since I sold my two retail games, my 3DS collection is now entirely digital.

There's been some great digital-only releases lately like Shovel Knight, Senran Kagura Burst and Ace Attorney 5. Retail games like Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Stone and Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns are on the eshop at attractive prices and Atlus is always having good sales on their titles like Code of Princess, Etrian Odyssey, and Shin Megami Tensei. There's also collections/series like the SEGA 3D Classics and Level 5's Guild. The Indy selection is solid too.

My advice? Just keep money.
