Early in 2022, we put out a list of 14 games we'd love to have on Switch. Since then, we've got at least five of them on Switch, so we're either prescient or powerful. So, in hopes that 2023 will be similarly rewarding, we're aiming this feature at you, Doug Bowser — we'd love to see the following games ported onto Nintendo's hybrid console. You don't even have to credit us, we're just that nice.
The Big Games
Wind Waker HD & Twilight Princess HD
Let's start it off easy, eh? These two excellent Zelda remasters have been trapped on the Wii U for too long! Bring their glorious HD selves over to the Switch — bundle them together, even — and we'll be happier than a Goron in a rockslide. We've already got Skyward Sword, which is arguably the hardest to port of those three games, so surely this pair can't be far behind?
What are the chances?
Call us hopelessly optimistic, but we feel like there have been hints that this could happen for a while now, and we can't see why Nintendo wouldn't consider at least one of them an easy win. Still, rumours are not reality.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Again, we've already got Super Mario Galaxy 1 in that short-lived Super Mario 3D All-Stars bumper pack. SMG2 is one of the best Mario games of all time, and it would be such a boon to be able to play it on Switch, maybe even before the next Super Mario game (Odyssey 2, perhaps?) comes out. It's been a while since we've bounced around with our second favourite Italian plumber, hasn't it?
What are the chances?
Honestly, who knows with Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo gave us 3D All-Stars and then ripped it from our hands by taking it off sale (although it really isn't hard to find even now). Behind the closed doors of the Japanese HQ, anything could be happening, but with Tears of the Kingdom on the slate, it sort of feels like it's Mario's turn to hog the spotlight next, you know?
Tomb Raider: Survivor Trilogy
This trilogy compilation release of Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, was released for PS4 and Xbox One, so it stands to reason that they'd run well enough on Switch, too. They're rather good games (with the original being a real stand-out late in the PS3 / Xbox 360 era) that tell the origin story of the iconic character, and they all have a flair for cinematic action and some occasional tomb raiding. Not all diehard fans of the IP approve of the games, but we reckon they're a fun time.
What are the chances?
Low-ish, we'd say. 2022 was an anniversary year for the franchise and would have been the ideal time, but previous IP owners Square Enix announced Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris for Switch instead, and port house Feral Interactive confirmed that those had slipped into 2023.
Embracer Group's acquisition of the IP and developers in August 2022 may increase the chances slightly of seeing the previous Tomb Raider trilogy ported to Switch, but we wouldn't hold our breath.
Batman: Arkham Collection
It sometimes feels like the Rocksteady-developed 'main' Arkham games have been done a disservice. Not only was the 'Return to Arkham' PS4 / Xbox One collection a technical disappointment, but the newest entry (Arkham Knight) has gone unloved and hasn't had any upgrades for the latest hardware. The trilogy, nevertheless, is comprised of three excellent games that would be awesome to play on Switch.
What are the chances?
It should be technically possible, though the third entry would be rather demanding to port across. The first two games should be do-able however, and let's not forget that we had Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition and Batman: Arkham Origins on Wii U, and even Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate on 3DS (later in its HD form on Wii U). The precedent is there.
Will it actually happen? Considering the haphazard treatment of the games over the years probably not. Still, you never know...
Metroid Prime
With Metroid Prime 4 scheduled to be with us sometime prior to Halley's Comet return, whispers abound that Nintendo is sitting on a remastered version of Metroid Prime, just waiting for the right time to pull the trigger and whet everyone's appetite ahead of MP4's arrival. We'd rather have the trilogy in a simple HD port, to be honest, but it's not our decision.
So, what are the chances this year?
Well, assuming that Prime 4 development is progressing — however slow-and-steady that progress may be — it's not beyond the realm of possibility that we'll see the rumoured Prime remaster, with Prime 4 to follow. Nintendo will want to start the Prime 4 Morph Ball rolling at some point, and releasing Metroid Prime on Switch would be a great way to do that.
Or, you know, the entire Prime trilogy. We'd take that, too.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
We got Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, remember? Remember the Wii U and Mass Effect 3? Sitting in a tree? K-I-S-S-I-N-G? Those were the days when EA execs looked at the Wii's numbers and thought they better go all-in on Wii U. And just look how that turned out.
What are the chances?
Having been stung on Wii U, EA hasn't bothered much with Switch. Since then, EA has also decided to go all-in on Xbox, with many of their games available through Microsoft's Game Pass. Many of the games in this list will suffer from this — if something's raking in the chips through Game Pass, why bother with Switch, where the game will run worse and make (probably) less money? This one ain't that likely, unfortunately.
Fallout (any of them)
It is a crime that the Fallout series only has one game on Switch, and it's the fun-but-forgettable mobile game, Fallout Shelter, and not New Vegas, Fallout 3, or Fallout 4. We're relatively sure that each one of these games would make a fantastic Switch port, since ol' Bethesda did such a great job porting over Skyrim to every platform ever, and Obsidian brought us Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity II, but they just haven't materialised.
What are the chances?
Weeeeeell, Microsoft now owns both Obsidian and Bethesda, the two developers of the Fallout series, so... not very likely? But then again, the Switch has Minecraft, Ori, and (apparently) will be getting Call of Duty, too, so it's not a zero chance. But you know how complicated company relationships can be, especially with rivals. We think this would be an easy win that could revitalise the older Fallout games for new audiences, but we aren't Phil Spencer.
Dragon Age (any of them)
Oh, can you imagine how much fun it would be to play even just Dragon Age: Origins on Switch? Surely someone at BioWare or EA can polish up a 13-year-old game for a 5-year-old console, no? And if we managed to get Dragon Age II and the glorious Dragon Age: Inquisition on the Switch as well, we would probably be glued to that tiny screen for months. If Skyrim and The Witcher 3 can do it, Dragon Age Inquisition can do it, too!
What are the chances?
Pretty low, for the same reasons as Fallout and Mass Effect: Xbox and EA are unlikely to let these behemoths out of their stables. Microsoft is more willing to share than Sony, it's true, but EA seems to have decided that the Switch isn't worth their precious time (proof: the travesty that is FIFA on Switch. Sigh).
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Another regular request of ours, 2020's Yakuza: Like A Dragon and its Dragon Quest-loving turn-based gameplay would still be gratefully received on Switch.
What are the chances?
Still low, unfortunately. You would hope that the broad audience and colossal success of Switch might make the series' producers reconsider putting the game on Nintendo's console, but Sega isn't the fastest company when it comes to gauging customer trends. As much as we'd love to see Ichiban become Switchiban, we might be asking too much.
Come on — Switchiban? Giving you solid gold over here!
Grand Theft Auto V
First up, it’s the fifth mainline entry in the GTA franchise. It introduced several new things to the series, the most significant being not gating the city from the beginning. Clunky in some ways, stunningly ambitious in others, the sheer scope of Rockstar’s environments is astonishing, and exploring Los Santos on Switch would be a fine thing — it was on PS3 and Xbox 360, for goodness' sake!
What are the chances?
Not impossible from a technical standpoint (PS3 and Xbox 360 just about handled it), but the game’s biggest innovation makes a Switch port less likely; GTA Online is still a colossal money-spinner for Rockstar, so a port of an old game to a console with a patchy online reputation probably isn’t an in-house priority. And after GTA Trilogy's launch state and the drubbing the developers received for it, there's probably not much inclination on Rockstar's part to get their hands dirty with a distraction like this. A shame.
Mad Max
Mad Max deserved better. Sure, it was a middle-of-the-road (pun intended) action-adventure that pulled from the Assassin's Creed school of design — that is, "map icons, everywhere" — but it was really fun to careen around the desert in a souped-up jalopy. It deserves to be able to get back up, brush off the dirt, and have a second chance at life on the Switch.
What are the chances?
Pretty microscopic, in no small part due to the fact that no one has thought about this game much since its 2015 release. We would put our money on Avalanche and Warner Bros. wanting to do more productive things with their time than remastering a game that received a lukewarm reception even when it was shiny and new.
Shadow of Mordor
Speaking of games that were pretty cool but faded away into the cultural soup, Shadow of Mordor! This innovative Lord of the Rings spin-off introduced us to the Nemesis System, in which your enemies not only remember you, but you form a sort of relationship with them during the course of the story, watching them rise up the ranks to lead armies before you get to fight them again. We haven't seen anything quite like it since.
What are the chances?
Hard to say exactly, but it's been almost ten years since this game came out. Monolith has since been working on a Wonder Woman game, although there hasn't been much news on that front other than a ton of recent new hires. Would they have the time to polish up Shadow of Mordor for us poor Switch players?
Tales of Arise
An action-RPG from Bandai Namco, Tales of Arise is the most entry in the Tales series featuring such games as Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia. This latest game was very well-received on other platforms, and we'd jump at the chance of playing it on Switch.
What are the chances?
Various games from the Tales series have appeared on Nintendo platforms over the years — including Switch — and Arise is an Unreal Engine 4 game, which Switch supports. That said, the series producer said back in August that there were "no plans" to bring the game to Switch — before also adding the usual 'if we see demand' caveat.
Marvel Snap
A dark horse in the race for 2022 Game of the Year, this mobile strategy card game came from nowhere to sweep a bunch of prizes. Apparently, it's really good. And it's a mobile game, which is easier to port over to Switch than a whole Fallout or whatever, right?
What are the chances?
We think the chances are surprisingly high, actually. It's a simple enough game, without all the confusing complications behind other card games like Magic: The Gathering, and it's got some stellar scores. It wouldn't be that big of a step to bring it over to Switch now that it's proved to be mega-popular, we reckon.
That's all the big games we'd love to see on Switch next year, but keep going to page two to find out which stellar indies and mid-size games we've got on our list (spoilers: one of them is Papers, Please!)...
Comments 123
Fallout 3, NV, and 4, and both RDR games, please.
I'd love to see the first Red Dead Redemption complete with Undead DLC.
Also the disney afternoon collection or ducktales remastered. Which really either should be on the switch! It's crazy that there's no version of ducktales on the switch
Edit: GTA IV too with all DLC
Laura craft games or COD for me. The only thing worth my money.
Batman would be so good!
But, tbh, pretty much any from the list would be great to have it.
I hate all the hype ports get. In 99% of cases ports are entirely insignificant.
They were a bigger deal on the Wii U when many developers would skip them, but there's no need to be excited about them five years into the Switch's success.
They're still nice to have, but they take up way too much attention. In an ideal world they would all be shadowdropped without any coverage on Directs and just receive a quick tweet notifying that it's out.
Shadow of Mordor and Vampire Survivors are the only ones I would like to see on Switch. The rest are just fine as PC games.
I get that the likelihood of it happening this year per se is low given that XC3's big narrative expansion is scheduled for it but with the Wii U eShop about to close, we still need Xenoblade Chronicles X on a modern Nintendo platform. Maybe we have to wait until '24 or '25 but if it's gonna happen, it probably needs to happen soon.
The Prime Trilogy getting a port would be nice, if only to help push the IP forward before the release of Prime 4. Dread was a strong release last year, and it would be nice for Nintendo to ride that strong momentum leading into Prime 4.
Seeing Marvel Snap get a port would be... surprising. But I do play it regularly on my phone; it's been a fantastic experience since day one, and a worthwhile replacement for Record Keeper after that game shut down.
@VGFreak1225 While I agree (it's the best Xenoblade game hands down), I hope they don't port it.
Love ports and the more the merrier. I’d like to see more wii games showing up. And ps3/360 era titles.
Obviously the Zelda Wii U remasters are high on my list, but I think the game I want the most would be a remake of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. It’s so expensive on the GameCube nowadays.
The second page is a fantastic list! I no longer game on PC nor PS so I have a list on Steam of what I'd love to see on Switch which pretty much matches this article:
Half Life 2
Alt4
Mass Effect Ledge
Chrono Trigger
Noita
Paper Please
Wyldermyth
FTL
Weird West
I just caved and downloaded Vampire Survivors on mobile - what a great game that is. Free too with adverts linked to character revival.
Would love to see several ports, but dont need them before a switch 2 has arrived with more juice. Developers clearly have struggles with delivering good ports already, maybe their fault, but even so, it is what it is. Rocket league is on switch, but is unplayble imo. Im not desperate for AAA 3rd party support, i have nintendo because i love nintendo games and their indie support, but would be a nice cherry on top of the cake if the switch 2 got enough power to deliver stable fps, full content and medium graphics for games like diablo 4, rocket league, no mans sky etc etc..
You always leave out Style Savvy and Tomodachi Life. 🤦🏻♀️
Those are the ones we REALLY need on Switch.
I would really like New Super Mario Brothers Wii. Ideally, I'd like every mainline Mario game on Switch, but New Sup Wii is one I've been wanting to replay in particular.
@Goofonzo I think a direct port is probably unlikely, but an XC1-style definitive edition with fresh content, some rebalancing and quality of life improvements, and expanded co-op functionality? I could see that. It'll probably have to be on the Switch 2 and I get that they're worried about cost (and maybe I'm talking out of my backside on this), but Xenoblade 3 already doubled XCX's sales and XC2's lifetime sales nearly tripled them. I'd like to believe there's still a chance.
Kid Icarus Uprising, Solar Ash, Scarlet Nexus/Code Vein, maybe.
I’m still waiting on that Outer Wilds port which was announced 2 years ago?
Good list. I have a lot of these on other platforms, but they’d be great on Switch. And I would indeed buy WW and TP yet again - probably push me to buy an OLED model.
Gawd, what a dope. I’m reading the SMG2 entry and thinking, “Second favorite Italian plumber? Who... oh, yeah.”
The ability to play the GC Zeldas and Metroids on the go would be amazing.
Vampire Survivors seems like a great Indie fit for Switch.
When it comes to games not on this list, I’d love to see MGS: Twin Snakes and Paper Mario TTYD.
I'm surprised we haven't seen more 3DS ports. Bring Star Fox 3D and A Link Between World in glorious HD.
Mass Effect and Dragon Age are highly unlikely because its EA and they don't bother with the Switch so its just a dream and won't happen.
A Fallout port of an older game like Fallout 3 or New Vegas or Fallout 4 might be likely but I doubt it unless Microsoft wants to remaster Fallout 3.
I don't think anyone's going to be surprised with what I want to come over.
WE'VE HAD A COLLECTION/RE-RELEASE EVERY OTHER YEAR SINCE 2017 LET ME HAVE THIS.
Other than my eternal yearning then, I'd love to see older Pokemon games like RBY, GSC and especially RSE come to a potential Game Boy NSO service down the line. It's not gonna happen, but a guy can dream, right?
It has already been confirmed that Potion Craft is coming to Switch. Why is it name still here?
When Twilight Princess HD on Switch is announced later you can thank me for buying it on the Wii U eShop last night after giving up all hope. And if it does? I'll buy it again!
After playing Crisis Core , I would definitely say that SquareEnix needs to give Dissidia 012 Duodecim the same treatment. Dissidia was a truly addictive fighter and was one of the PSPs crown jewels that has not been ported or remade yet.
@VGFreak1225 I don't know if you've seen it, but some of the Monolith staff did an interview a few years ago where they mentioned that porting Xenoblade X to the switch would take so much resources they'd rather just remake it, I can't remember the exact quote but I remember that they sounded a bit dissatisfied with the final product in comparison to the mainline games, so they would actually want to remake it. So I highly doubt we'd see a port of X on the Switch
Personally, while I've never played the first game, I think I'd rather see a sequel on the next Nintendo console that expands and improves upon the original. I've heard mixed opinions on X, and apparently the story ended on a cliffhanger, so I think a sequel would satisfy everyone.
Again, I might be misremembering, but maybe it was during an interview about the Torna expansion (on Nintendolife, I think), so that may be worth checking out for you
Yep, every one of those indie games should come to Switch please.
@TheUnrestCure Love it. Thanks.
Regret not - good buy on the Wii U nonetheless. The interface for TP and WW is excellent on that system.
I could see Tales of Arise, the Batman Arkham games, the Tomb Raider games, GTA V, Vampire Survivor, and Mad Max coming but everything else are just wishful thinking. The Like a Dragon (Yakuza) games will never come to Switch thanks in terms to that one guy who just can't stand Nintendo.
Nintendo Direct in January ????
I will scoop up Wildermyth on day one when it finally comes out. The only reason I don't play it more is because it's hard for me to clear enough PC time to really dig in. That's less of a problem on the Switch.
I'll add Rimworld to the list. It got released for everything else, but it BELONGS on Switch, and doesn't seem like it's too demanding or anything.
@GreenTea I've seen the interview in question. I just think that a re-imagining like the one I described in my previous reply might alleviate some of XCX's original problems. It's been seven and a half years since the game's Japanese release, and it was only Monolith Soft's second attempt at that kind of game, first attempt if you consider the game's heavy exploration and community focus separate from XC1's more narrative-driven structure. Now it has a fanbase big enough that they might actually be able to improve it and maintain interest longer if they decided to give it another shot. If they really want to go the remake or sequel route I'll be there, but I want to see it get a second chance.
I’m going to go somewhat old school here and plausible based on hardware requirements:
1. Sid Meier’s Pirates!
2. Civ Revolution
3. Monkey Island Collection
4. Ducktales Remastered
5. Super Mario RPG
6. Maxis Classics Collection (SimCity, SimAnt, SimEarth)
7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
8. Simpsons Classic Game Collection (Arcade, Hit & Run, etc.)
9. Paper Mario Collection
10. Metroid Prime Collection
@Scapetti Would love to see Ducktales remastered.
Wind Waker/Twilight Princess HD ports
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Would be all must buys for me, would love to be able to play them on the Switch and they'd look great on the bookcase.
Hey @nintendolife, Square Enix no longer owns Tomb Raider, the remainder of Eidos studios were acquired by Embracer Group. Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Rain and all those properties are owned by them. Embracer owns Koch Media and THQ Nordic. Feral Interactive is handling the Switch ports of those games, which is likely they have an agreement with Embracer. Tomb Raider games COULD be a possibility since Embracer Group's THQ Nordic is a heavy Switch supporter. They also bought Limited Run Games too.
The new Dead Space remake looks and sounds fantastic. I know the Switch cannot compete with the other hardware, but an honest attempt to bring it over would be amazing.
Golden Sun
Chrono Trigger
Skies of Arcadia
And I want Guitar Hero and DDR!
@VGFreak1225 Yeah, I think that's fair too, hopefully a definitive edition of some kind is coming in the future. Especially considering that the Switch trilogy brought a lot of fans to the the series that would absolutely check it out, me included!
I sure hope we see Twilight Princess and Wind Waker on Switch or the next Nintendo console.
Probably a different list but would love to have a remaster of Dragon Quest VIII on Switch too.
@Bishop_Saturn Oh a Simpsons game collection would be sensational! It makes too much sense to happen.
Elden Ring. It's never going to happen, but damn how I'd love to continue playing it on my Switch when I need to turn off my Xbox.
Theres a handful of games that I'd feel would make the switch complete... I was super happy for persona 5, still waiting on the arkham games, gta..meh not so much anymore but I'd want it just for single player, waiting for the two Zelda ports from GameCube, Metroid prime trilogy, metal gear solid and some older rockstar games like the warriors, bully, and max payne 3 (not gonna happen ever tho) would be great
i wouldn't mind the Psuchonauts games being ported
Also call of duty would run fine on switch if they actually tried since its practically the same bs graphics and engine since the original modern warfare on 360
Good list here, I'd definitely be all over Batman, Mass Effect and Fallout if they ever came over to Switch. Kinda baffling to me that they're not already on Switch tbh.
Guilty Gear Strive.
Please and thank you, Arc System Works.
VANQUISH! It’s Platinum game and Platinum works closely with Nintendo! Otherwise MGS 1-3, Arkham games, Mass Effect and GTAV and I am happy!
I don't think I want the Switch port anymore after I have experienced with downgraded quality from Switch version 3rd party games and it was my last straw.
Papers, Please has been on Vita for years, actually. AndI understand it's a British website, but are we still not over FIFA yet? It's a bummer for everyone interested, but not quite enough to ignore the bunch of other games EA did port over the years. Fe and Lost in Random, Burnout Paradise and NFS HP10, Battle for Neighborville and It Takes Two - not the Squeenix/Bamco/Ubisoft amount of presence but nothing too shabby either.
That aside... I continue to keep my fingers crossed for the long awaited items like FFXIII and Dishonored trilogies, once announced but MIA items like Heart Forth Alicia and Dangerous Driving 2 and too much to list besides. 2023 already has quite a few delicious additions to Switch's fantastic library and only time will tell what we may hear about down the road.
Nier Replicant please. And the mobile one too. Plus a Drakkengard collection.
Would also love Ever Crisis too.
I know the developers have said it will never happen but I still just want FTL on the Switch
No ports please unless they are first party Nintendo titles or retro titles. Chibi-Robo please? Bring GB to Switch Online? I played plenty of PS3/360 games 15 years ago or whatever.
All I want is a Paper Mario TTYD and Super Paper Mario remaster on Switch. That's all. If more remakes happen, great
I'd like to see:
2. The Metal Gear Solid series (I have them on PS3 but I'm one of those people who pretty much only uses handhelds.)
3. Silent Hill (because, why not?)
4. Xenoblade Chronicles X.
5. Metroid Prime Trilogy
6. Nier Replicant
7. The Like a Dragon series.
Only WindWaker for me.
There’s some great picks on this list. Particularly Vampire Survivors (which would suit Switch down to the ground), The Witness, the Monkey Island games and the utterly fabulous Papers, Please, which I still play pretty regularly on iPhone.
I'd really like to see Dark Souls 2/3 make it over. Still never gotten the chance to play them.
Zelda WW and TP, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Paper Mario TTYD (HD remaster?), Silent Hill
the dragon engine is an unoptimized mess. Switch might see older yakuza titles, but if Like a Dragon ran poorly on Series S… imagine how a switch version would run.
GTA V is long overdue on switch. it can run on ps360 and potato PCs, why isn‘t it on the switch yet, I don’t know
Arise is a game mighty possible on Switch. The graphics are not that much better than Berseria, and it runs smoothly on the other machines. This is Bamco being idiots.
Surprised to see XCX missing from the list. it’s the only Wii U game that I desperately want ported on Switch.
For the rest of the games, I really don’t care if they come to switch or not, except maybe TR.
Shenmue games
Tenchu games
Mystical Ninja games
It's probably never going to happen at this point but I still hope that Xenoblade X somehow gets ported.
As for more realistic ports on my wishlist:
It would be nice to be able to play all the Disgaea games on a single platform.
3rd party Devs should be working on new games not ports for the switch 🤷♂️
Double Dash, TTYD.
@iLikeUrAttitude I believe Multiversus is not on switch due to not having rollback netcode, not because of the graphics.
Dark Souls Trilogy, because if we can't get Elden Ring on Switch it's time for the next best thing
A Half-Life collection consisting of Half-Life (and all of it’s “DLC” like Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Decay, ect…), and Half-Life 2, with Episode 1 and 2. That’s what I want most.
Metroid Prime please
I would love Nintendo to release Punch Out (Wii version) and Yoshi’s Wooly World for the Switch.
And here I am, still waiting for the Switch port of Genshin Impact. It would give me a reason to play my Switch again. As it is, the last time I played my Switch was when the last Splatfest for Splatoon 3 was live.
The rest of my gaming time (what little of it I have left) was spent playing either Genshin Impact or Minecraft: Java Edition (playing on the Vox Populi server, made famous by Markiplier's Drunk Minecraft series on YouTube).
I would love if Dragon Age Origins got ported with PC controls to the switch. (I don't care about the other two after my first playthrough) but Origins was sooooo goood. Both Fallouts are in buggier shape than Skyrim so I wouldn't ask for those unless you want to kill your switch. GTA V should have been on switch...its only almost as many platforms as skyrim at this point.
@Savage_Joe Well that makes even less sense because the majority of fighting games on Switch do not have rollback netcode. That was never the standard if that's what you're trying to imply.
Seriously, just get a Steam Deck for 3rd party at this point, your games will be future proof for decades to come as well.
It can't run Mortal Kombat 11 any higher than like 10 FPS, I highly doubt it would be able to run GTA V.
@Savage_Joe It would never be able to run on Switch. MK11 barely works.
@iLikeUrAttitude when a game is made with rollback netcode in mind, every version should be compatible with it. A version not supporting that means that it has to be coded to work on whatever that version has and forcing the other versions to be compatible when matching with someone not using rollback. Multiversus has crossplay thanks to that. Nick all stars has rollback on every version sans switch, and it doesn’t feature crossplay. Perhaps WB didn’t wanted to go through all that hassle.
@Zeroshiki- Ha! Warner Bros. cancelled Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Mortal Kombat X, while Rockstar Games released GTA V on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Nintendo Switch is capable of running GTA V, lol.
The vast majority of these games would turn the Switch into a bubbling puddle of plastic. Just get a PS4 (they're dirt cheap) or Xbox Series S (which is less expensive than a Switch) and you'll be able to play all these games without the framerate issues and soft, blurry graphics that plague most Switch ports.
@Ambassador_Kong What's about portability, though? Gonna recommend to buy Steam Deck?
@Savage_Joe So basically they kept out the Switch version because they didn't feel like bothering as usual.
For the record rollback isn't demanding by any means multiple games have rollback and crossplay on the Switch it's just a matter of whether or not the developers feel like implementing it.
@iLikeUrAttitude theoretically, the switch “can” handle rollback netcode on games that don’t really require super fast reflexes, like in MK11 or Capcom Fighting Collection. However, that technology is taxing on the servers and on the switch itself, and can’t really be used in smash bros.-style games. Samurai Shodown devs said that they had many issues making rollback work on the switch version, and deemed not worthy of putting it.
I’m still waiting for that monster tale port. 😅
Skies of Arcadia and the Lost Kingdoms series.
That is all.
@Savage_Joe It's not "theoretically" it's been seen in practice through multiple examples on the Switch.
In what world is rollback demanding on the hardware on the switch let alone any system that isn't a potato?
You have fan games running rollback with melee on even weaker hardware on the Switch.
There are multiple modern fighting games that run well that also have rollback - Thems Fightin Herds, Skullgirls, Power Rangers just to name a few.
That MK11 and Capcom Fighting Collection example you gave didn't make much sense seeing as how they require reflexes attune to any other game in it's genre and it's way more demanding than Multiversus, if a game like MK11 can run on the switch with rollback then multiversus has no excuse, the devs just didn't feel like putting it on the switch.
Just because one dev team struggled to put it on Switch doesn't mean it's hard to put it on switch in general.
There are many variations of rollback - Capcom's rollback for example is notoriously bad - whether it runs competently or not is the fault of the developers, not the console itself.
@Vyacheslav333 I don't see how, when it can't run MK11 at more than 10 FPS and that isn't even an open-world game. Even Pokémon SWSH and Violet/Scarlet have massive frame drops in some areas.
@iLikeUrAttitude you’re comparing light indie games with full scale fighting games. Smash style games require a lot of guesswork from the server to make a successful prediction or “rollback” to the actual input if it predicted wrong. That takes resources, and it has to be done frame by frame. That effort multiplies when more players are involved. Will the switch really handle that when it can barely do it on a 1v1 in MK11? Or how about this, have you wondered why doesn’t Smash Ultimate have it, even after people asked Sakurai about it multiple times?
I would love to see the old Tomb Raiders (at least 1-3) on Switch.
@Savage_Joe Sure I could give you the other two I mentioned but Power Rangers probably not, not to mention MK11 was already mentioned by you and that has rollback netcode as well.
Yeah... that's how rollback works in general...
Yes if fans on a much smaller scale can implement rollback from passion then a dev team working under the resources of a billion dollar company can certainly do the same.
Everything requires resources, simply pointing that out especially in the context of a company that has plenty adds nothing to the discussion and is a statement with no substance. It's basically the equivalent of saying: "tHAtS gOinG tO TAkE a LoT oF woRk", well no duh.
Well for starters Nintendo or Sakurai don't really care what the fans are complaining about and don't really listen to feedback so that's a moot point from the get go.
Second of all just because it hasn't been implemented doesn't mean it shouldn't.
Third you can't just jump to a conclusion to a question that has multiple variables behind it, thats a disingenuous assumption that can't be backed up for sure at the most all we can do is make educated assumptions and speculate.
From what I see here are probably the reasons on why smash doesn't have rollback:
For the record I'm not saying Smash Ultimate needs to have it's online reworked now, thats obviously going to take a lot more work than it's worth especially when it's already a huge success from a financial standpoint.
But when the next iteration of the Switch is released and we inevitably get Smash 6, and there is still no rollback netcode? Nintendo has no excuses by then.
Give me NV, GTA IV, and Code Vein please
I'm playing through Tales of Arise on PS5 right now. It's ridiculously good. not just as a game in general, but with the amount of polish - down to just viewing cutscenes at one's own pace. You kinda just have to play it for a while to understand. It's rewarding, but with most of the stress stripped right out.
I'm just not sure if the switch can handle it with a decent frame rate. They would definitely have to scale down a bit. It would still be worth it.
Switch can run Witcher 3 awesome… so it’s no excuse for these companies to say Switch can’t do it.
I'd like to see the Yakuza games on Switch, at least the ones that were on PS3 since those could easily run on the thing, but if the RGG Studio continues to hate Nintendo consoles for that Wii U port's failure, that won't be the case, in fact it may not be the case even on the next Nintendo conole for what we know, unless Nintendo pays them or something like that.
Other than that I hope we see a Half Life Collection after the Portal one and we continue to see some of those stupidely late but quality ports of Bandai Namco, in this case from Arise or Scarlet Nexus.
I want ports of the following games:
Acceleration of Suguri X Edition, killer7, Lolipop Chainsaw, The King of Fighters XI, The King of Fighters XIII, Akatsuki Blitzkampf and EN-Eins Perfektewelt, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Aquapazza: Aquaplus Dream Match, Arcana Heart 3, Asuka 120% Return BURNING Fest., Asura Buster - Eternal Warriors, Battle Fantasia: Revised Edition, Gaiapolis: Sword of the Golden Hawk, Battle Tryst, Big Bang Beat - 1st Impression and Big Bang Beat - Resolve, Bloody Roar Extreme, Bloody Roar 4, Buriki ONE, SAMURAI SPIRITS(HYPER NEOGEO 64), SAMURAI SPIRITS 2 Asura Zanmaden, Burning Rival, Bushidō Blade 1 and 2, Astronōka, Capcom Fighting Jam, Killer is Dead: Nightmare Edition, Capcom vs. SNK fighting games, Castlevania Judgement, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, DENGEKI BUNKO FIGHTING CLIMAX IGNITION, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, Ehrgeiz, Daraku Tenshi - The Fallen Angels Complete Edition, Devil's World Outside of Heaven - The True Legend, Fighters Megamix, Fighting Vipers 1 and 2, Corpse Party: Book of Shadows, Corpse Party 2U: Sachiko's Game of Love♥️ Hysteric Birthday, Absolute Despair Girls: Danganronpa Another Episode, Golden Axe: The Duel, Granblue Fantasy Versus, Gōketsuji Ichizoku games, Guilty Gear Isuka, Guilty Gear 2 Overture, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, The King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 Regulation "A", Martial Masters(1999), and many other fighting games...
Virtual on, Virtua Fighter V, Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Sega Rally Collection
@Zeroshiki- Well, Pokémon games' optimization just sucks. What's about open-world action games... Nintendo Switch is capable of running NieR:Automata at 720p30FPS(in handheld mode) and Bayonetta 3 at 600p60FPS(in handheld mode). Also, Switch is capable of running games like The Witcher 3, DOOM(2016), DOOM Eternal, No Man's Sky, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus...
@nintendolife Well... Her Story is available on iOS and Android and both versions are fully playable with touchscreen controls. Also, game is playable on smartphones, not only on tablets. So... It's possible to play Her Story without mouse+keyboard. And game's engine is Unity, so... It's possible to port Her Story on Switch without any technical problems.
Shenmue I, II, not even talking about III. That's it for me
Metroid Prime needs a proper PC release so we can play on KB/M!
Fallout New Vegas, the Metal Gear games and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are my most wanted ports.
It's time for a Professor Layton collection. What's the hold-up?
@Vyacheslav333 This surprises me, since I bought and returned MK11 I figured the Switch couldn't handle much more than Mario, Fire Emblem, and Pokémon and that those bigger games just wouldn't run well, so I never looked into buying any.
At this point I mostly just want the Zero Escape games, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Thousand-Year Door, Galaxy 2, and Ace Attorney 4-6.
Though would also like to see some 3DS games ported. Really doubt those in particular but would absolutely love to have Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem Awakening and Fates, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Link Between Worlds on the Switch. Maaaaybe 3D Land.
Whish list GTA V , COD , MGS 3 4 5
Dissapoint RE remake , KH series
List of Switch Port/News Wishfuls:
(admittedly it’s a reach, but I’m still hoping for more info and/or announcements on or of the following coming to Switch in a Partner Direct)
.. Granted some of these may or may not be considered “Indies” per se, but they’re mostly partner digital offerings.
… Wun can only hope!
Dishonored series would be cool on Switch! Whos with me?
I'd have liked these:
1. Sleeping Dogs (compared to GTA V it should be doable. Though commercial prospects of the game might be low.)
2. TR 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider should be possible. (Shadow would be a huge challenge, so won't count on that.)
3. Hitman Blood Money and Absolution (not sure whether devs would want to port but...)
4. Fallout 3 and New Vegas (since Microsoft has been quite generous to Nintendo and want their support with their take on Sony)
5. Mass Effect Legendary Edition (fat chance, EA was never very hot on Switch.
6. Dark Souls 2 & 3. (But remember DS3 is GPU-heavy when we compare it to Witcher 3)
Just wishing out loud. May not see any of these.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the most obvious example of a game that should have been ported long ago, but Nintendo's gonna Nintendo.
It's a niche title, but Game Freak's Tembo the Badass Elephant has gotten a release on pretty much everything except a Nintendo platform, which is just baffling. Not as good as Drill Dozer but it was a fun little game that really ought to be on Switch.
I'd also really like to see Witcher 1 and 2 come to Switch. I've heard nothing but great things about Witcher 3 but I've left it in the backlog just in case 1 and 2 get ports or remasters, since I'd like to play them in order.
The Tomb Raider games would complete my life. Sold my PS4 last year and those 3 games were probably the only ones tempting me to keep it.
@progx You are of course correct. I've tweaked it to clarify that SE was the previous owner of the IP and have added another line with some more context.
While the Switch could probably handle Mass Effect Legendary Edition with some graphical downgrades, I think the size of it would be a big issue. The PC version is 120 gigabytes, and even the US console versions (which lack various alternate languages) are around 80 gigs. So even if you release it as an English-only version, it won't fit on a single Switch cartridge. And while they could make it an Eshop exclusive, a 80–120 gig download is gonna hog a lot of the space available on a typical MicroSD card. So the only realistic option would be to release the three games separately.
So regarding Papers, Please, a month ago Lucas Pope posted to twitter that they rewrote the game in Unity. Which means, it's now multiplatform-ready. https://twitter.com/dukope/status/1596694987567435776
The Sims 4 and Fire Pro Wrestling World are perfect for the Switch because nobody will care about graphics or framerate on those games and It would be great to have them portable
Ports are good but without the hardware to push the pixels AAA games or demanding gamers won't matter much.
Id do anything for fallout ports. Anything.
