I don't understand how people could say the controls don't work or were worse than the controls of other Zeldas. What game were you guys playing?
I know this whole thing is subjective and "fanboys going to fanboy" which, given I'm posting on this article, I probably am. Still, I don't get it. Kinda like those product reviews you see for things that say stuff like "worthless product, performed horribly, will never buy this brand again" next to "worked as expected and was a pleasure to use"...... you know someone's talking out of their ass.
I noticed that the screenshots on the eShop page for Pullblox (Pushmo) are in 3D. I think that's a first and a small but important improvement from not having any with 3D screenshots.
While they're at it more games, retail games also, should have 3D trailers on the eShop.
I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand they pushed to get it to launch on time AND Retro had a hand in development (woot!). On the other hand they pushed to get it launched on time.......
@Cipher Well, if "that's nothing" I guess Australia got the worst deal. We got Skyward Sword late on the 23rd and only because the street date was broken........ but we have it now and we get Mario Kart on the 3rd so, all is good!
@Usagi-san It's fairly standard fare and it's purely so you can work out what people are coming to your site looking for. It's so you can work out what topics/posts are generating the most traffic and why.
...... and the why is sometimes really, really strange
Oh wow, I was at EBs today (hunting for streetpasses) and was kinda tempted to ask about Super Mario 3D Land. Knew Gametraders had broken release which also happened for OoT 3D and EB was fairly quick to follow.
I guess I'm not that annoyed, I wasn't planning on getting it at launch...... if it was Skyward Sword I'd be annoyed....
I'm surprised that people are complaining that it seems to be getting all of the major 2011/2012 cross platform titles. Personally I'd be pretty worried if that wasn't happening.
Think about it, next year we'll end up wanting it for some cool first party title. Then we'll see 2012's Skyrim or Arkam City and have the option to get THAT on the Wii U. If that option WASN'T there then why did they bother? That's where and what the Wii is.
@sillygostly Well the Australian store has the Kirby Pouch now, G&W 2 is on it's way finally. Also there have been some pretty awesome EB Game pre-order exclusives here recently so I wouldn't complain too much.
Looks pretty damn good and the 3D really adds a sort of atmosphere. Not sure if I'm that interested in this sort of game though....... so will wait for reviews (and possibly bargain bins)
@Splat Red Steel 2? Great? .... Good definitely, decent controls and fun but it was buggy, repetitive and from memory fairly short so I wouldn't call it great. I wouldn't even say it's the best use of Motion Plus I've seen either and the only Motion Plus games I own are Red Steel 2 and Wii Sports Resort!
On topic! pointer controls are awesome for FPS so I, like most here, strongly disagree. Gyro aiming, which is what Motion Plus can do, isn't too bad either. Infact it was so good in OoT 3D that I used it exclusively. Clearly this Tony Key bloke is either doing it wrong or is simply trying to spin something for the audience (Kinect owners) he's talking to.
........ but it's not like what we're missing out on is that much really. There aren't.... well only really three.... four... maybe five good games in there I'd want to see in 3D. Ok, I guess we're missing out.
They have spotpass notifications built in now like they do for the ambassador certificate and they're not the same trailers. Also, TBH, the E3 trailers are what I used to demo the 3DS so it's good to have them outside of the eShop.
plus they have cool looking icons now........ even if there is a huge delay before the video to show rating information
The low framerates have me a bit worried. Sounds a bit like they didn't spend enough time optimising for the 3DS architecture....... although it's worth pointing out that these sort of games can be deceptively graphically intensive with all the particle effects.
@19Robb92 @Wheels2050 I'd assume it'd be the same as how it is with the other 3D Zeldas. You come across something like 10 Rupees or some Deku seeds for the first time and it gets all excited about it "wow! you found a Deku Stick! It's a stick!" ......... but then after that it doesn't make a big deal.
I was pretty hyped about this until I saw the trailer on the eShop. It just seems kinda.... less punchy if that's the right word. It's not really Mega Man without the colour or sound of the NES.
I do think that restore points are a must for Mega Man though so that's a huge plus in my books. Not that I've played a Mega Man game with restore points before........................ cough
@Kirk I think you're being a bit harsh. I think that it's better to have a variety of good games on the "shelf" rather than simply the highest scoring titles. Xevious is fairly unique on the eShop (until twinbee arrives) and so is GO Series: 10 Second Run and even Super Mario Land. They didn't get brilliant scores on Nintendo Life but they are fairly interesting and unique titles which got really positive reviews.
I think we're better off that this list is a bit flexible with the scores. I mean.... let's not forget that Mario & Yoshi got a 4
This is very cool and, might I add, the games on the Australian list are all pretty damn good. It's good to see some good "shelves" like this on the eShop and I hope we see more of this and less "games that start with R"
The silly certificate thing also has spotpass notifications. If you enable it they'll send you info about developments in ambassador land so it's not entirely pointless. I got a message from it the other day saying "so you worked out how to download the free games and such? This is just to remind you that you can download free games and such"
They also have a video on the frontpage of the eShop now walking you through the download process. So that should make it a bit easier for the technophobes.... I guess....
I'm probably one of the only people hyped about (Mario and) Yoshi..... but I'm only hyped because it was the first game I got on my Gameboy. I swear, it's not as bad as the reviews say
I'm thinking of something like the bow/slingshot/grapple/view gyro controls on OoT3D. Instead of showing Link over the target on the WiiU controller you simply show what you're aiming at in something like first person (but say, from a "window" just infront of Link instead of from Link's eyes) and a target in the center. The main screen shows Link in third person aiming at whatever he's aiming at.
Interesting, the OFLC (Australian classification board) has Catrap and Golf rated but neither are on this list. There's Gargoyle's Quest, Urban Champion and even Starfox.... but then they include Catrap, Golf and then nothing else.
I guess either the actual lineup for the 3DS VC will be a lot more padded out or the OFLC have gone a bit mental. Likely both!
@15 Yes... technically... but I think developers will assume you have a TV hooked up and can turn it on. I'm fairly sure some games will demand the use of the TV.
You can almost think of it like a huge DS. On the DS developers could, if they wanted, give you an option to play on only one screen. It wouldn't really be much of a feature on the DS but on the Wii U it could be. However there are some DS games, and therefore Wii U games, where doing that would remove something. On the DS that would be things like Henry Hatsworth but on a home console the TV is handy for other things like multiplayer etc, etc.
@13 Depends on what it is. As Nintendo fanboy who has a computer/spatial science background I can't help but think of this as one of the huge exceptions to the rule.
edit: oh, and something I just noticed. No mention of an IR camera on the front (i.e. top) of the Wii U controller... which is surprising. I guess that means it's not possible to work out where the Wii U controller is in relation to the TV using the sensor bar. Unless you somehow use the front facing camera or do some calibration using the Wii Remote and/or magnetic sensor thingo..... :S
Actually, I'm 100% sure what I said was correct. They talk about the golf example and say they calculate the location of the "golf club" based on some step. When you find that step there is a detailed description of it.... Which basically says they calculate the location of "controller 5" (the Wii Remote) based on the position of "marker 6" (the Wii sensor bar) and then they go into a detailed description of how they use that information to zero the gyros. So it does seem like this is Wii Sports Resort golf with a second screen.
........ and all I can find about how they use the magnetic sensor is this: "Strictly speaking, in a place where there is a magnetic field other than the geomagnetic field, the obtained azimuthal direction data does not represent the azimuthal direction. Nevertheless, if the terminal device 7 (Wii U Controller) moves, the azimuthal direction data changes, and it is therefore possible to calculate the change in the attitude of the terminal device 7"
i.e. it's a compass that they use to work out the direction the controller is facing relative to where it was facing before.......
I'm fairly sure that's not how it works......... I highly doubt the Wii Remote creates enough of a magnetic field to be used in that way. Infact the patent doesn't seem to mention that use at all. More likely they're using the "markers" (also in the patent) which I'm assuming are just IR points (given the Wii Remote's IR Camera) in that use case.... or simply using it as a display and doing the same way they did in Wii Sports Resort.
As for the magnetic sensors, they have them in iPhones and some GPSes and in them it's purely used to make calculating "direction" quicker/possible. Without that sensor you have to compare your current position to your previous position to calculate direction. So more likely they're including it so they can zero the gyros using the sensor bar and, once that's done, they can then re-zero the gyros using the Earth's magnetic field.
I had a feeling WaltzElf would be all over this....... Seriously though, Nintendo's strength is in it's exclusives. It'd be silly for them to start doing New SMB on the iPhone or on the PS Phone. Exclusivity is everything even in this "smartphone age". People buy Apple for iTunes, people by Android for Google integration, people buy Nintendo for Mario.
Having said that, they could do some "apps". There are HEAPS of unofficial guides and pokedexes on these App stores, I don't see why they couldn't do some official versions. At the other end of the spectrum they need to encourage more app developers to release, say, 3DSWare versions of Angry Birds.
As far as investor freakouts and demands go this, IMO, is one of the worst ones. They're currently demanding that News Ltd shut down some of their papers.... that makes sense, this doesn't.
@akacesfan I don't know about "kangaroo farms" but they're definitely kept in captivity and eaten..... just not at the same time I don't think. Keep injured or orphaned ones in captivity and hunt the wild ones which are pretty plague like. Emu farming? Yup. Kangaroo farming.... I don't think so.
Oh, and while I'm hear again. Possum farming? Really? Does anyone actually EAT possums let alone farm them?
Buffalo? I know they probably weren't going for accuracy but still that seems a bit strange. Why not Camels, Alpacas and (obviously) Cows? Lots of animals to pick before Buffalo (esp considering I don't think I've ever heard of an Australian Buffalo farm)
Throw in a 'roo shootin' minigame and this could've been a lot better
I'm not complaining at all and, TBH, I'm probably more interested in Kirby than I am in any of the officially announced games so far. I love a good platformer and this Kirby (unlike the NES and SNES Mario Ports) is one I've never played
@CowLaunch Oh I see, I misread. For some reason I thought you were saying that the people who brought it early were being screwed over not the other way around.
If that's the case then..... I still don't get why you're complaining. If you think that the people who get it early are getting a better deal then go out and buy it now. If you think that the games aren't worth the $100AU (or whatever) then pocket the cash and spend it on whatever you want.
Personally, I'd rather the cash value of the NES/GBA games in eShop credit than the ability to download a pre-determined set of NES/GBA games for free. If you get it later you can pretty much do that if you want.
@CowLaunch I don't get that logic. What difference does it make to me if the GBA games don't remain exclusive to "ambassadors"? It's not like the games will be less enjoyable if they start selling them later.
It's a bit like the 3D Classics Excitebike. That was free for a while and now it's not. I got it for free and I can still play it and the fact that they charge for it now doesn't make it a more enjoyable game. The 3D trailers were free and now they're not available, they're not suddenly better now I can't download them anymore.
