Everything about this game is fantastic save one thing: It doesn't seem to know it's on a portable system. The engine suits the system, but the story and presentation thereof is that of a home console experience. The cutscenes are all 1/3 too long. It's not just the actual total time each takes, it's that the waste time with repetitive over-dramatic flowery dialogue. I was listening to Japanese and glancing down at English from time to time, so I'm aware of two languages of this, though they reduced how glaringly purple and redundant things would get. I love the characters, I love the story, I love the art, I love the actual gameplay. I just wish the writer(s) didn't love the sound of their own voice(s) so much.
Wow. This game is... really good. Haven't tried the multiplayer, but then again, that's never my number one reason for buying again... not even my number 7....

@Chi
Also, Japanese students "learn" something their teachers call "English" in school.
Very few people in Japan can actually speak or understand English beyond what's on the tests they have to take, and what's on those tests is often sort of English which sounds incredibly awkward to a native speaker.
Using that gets you "DIGDOGGER HATES CERTAIN TYPE OF SOUND" etc
I've been there twice, 1 month each time, travelling alone. People were often surprised by my Japanese skills, I wasn't surprised by their lack of English skills (they're not needed in daily life. don't use it, lose it).
I'm just saying that that's a moot point, and just knowing a language doesn't make you suited to translation. Anything but in-person verbal translation's always been torturous for me. Between over-thinking things, and then trying to make them sound natural... -_-

@SanderEvers Hmm. With some work in editing applications that wouldn't be too hard. Carefully sharpen all the lines and borders between colours at a higher resolution in a raster graphic editor (gimp, photoshop, etc), vectorise for even sharper lines (you could do it all in raster, but it would probably take more time), tweak a bit, make a high-dpi pdf file with the exact resolution, (outlined with dots for cutting) cut, done.
Personally, I ain't doin' it, but the result would look nice.
America is no worse or better, the way what problems are exhibited are different is all.

Digital:
(all of this applies to Nintendo systems, most to all systems)
If your system is stolen, so is your whole game collection.
If your system breaks after the system is no longer supported (happens to every system some day) your entire collection is gone. Perhaps you can 'buy' the same games again on a new system, perhaps not.
You can lend a disc or cartridge, but not a digital copy.
Do I buy digital? Yeah.
I'm compromising my principles in doing so, but I'm already doing that by buying games for a mainstream games system. (I generally avoid proprietary software, but there are so few good game experiences in the FOSS world)
All said, if I want a game and it's available as a physical copy, I'm getting that copy, because I have control of that copy, and will be able to play it as long as I have a working system.
@ledreppe

Random Access Memory. That little memory is a very tight constraint.
Phones today also run variants of a sophisticated OS originally designed to run on mainframes and have massive uptimes.
The 3DS runs games. It reboots when you exit settings. whoopdie crap.
@Aryon Different from a phone number, but not that different from icq.
The advantage with an account system is you don't have to share your info in theory. You friend based on activity, which makes it both more personal and less 'spread around' for lack of a better word atm. I think we'll likely see popular games that rely on codes to be patched, and less popular games (sadly) abandoned. The joys of proprietary software and non-standard communication protocols. -_-

I didn't defend Nintendo. I said they screwed things up by going the ICQ route of unique numbers rather than actual accounts. Then people decided to ignore how stupid that system was, and use it. @KillerGBH The idea of FRIEND codes is that you give them to your FRIENDS. Then your FRIENDS use the FRIEND code to play games with you.
Pokemon?... Never understood the appeal, personally. In part due to the fact that it's tedious to collect them alone. So I understand why you'd want to just exchange pokemon with everyone possible, but that's just A: not how it works. Live with it. Sometimes games take work, and meeting people can be work. There's probably a Pokemon/3DS meet-up in your area. B: not safe. DON'T GIVE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION TO STRANGERS. That's STUPID.
@ToxieDogg Here's my theory: Nintendo had no way to "friend" people on the 3DS. Just plain no ecosystem for it. No central hub, however you wanna phrase it. Short-sighted, icq-level planning. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw that system "Oh, ICQ. I'm not going to be using this." Just purpose-built for spam et al. People decided that they wanted more 'friends' to exchange data and play with. Understandable. They started posting their codes publicly. headdesk Yeah! Just hand out your phone number! Post it on a bulletin board in a coffee shop! BIG SURPRISE. These numbers got abused. Notably in SwapNote, where people either sent obscene images/messages to children, enticed them to do so themselves, or both. The details weren't revealed, and frankly I'd prefer to not know the details. Nintendo killed swapnote spotpass. When they introduced miiverse they either rushed it so they could replace some of the chat/picture functionality of SwapNote, or they purposefully didn't add the ability to 'friend' people, at least until the heat from the above dies down.
@Gerbwmu I understand your feelings, but the only situation in which I'm actually comfortable with random swearing is with my friends. That's something that hasn't changed as I've headed further into my 30s.

@KeatonTS "Way to meet people" is not the same as "social networking service". That's... about all that's on-topic here, so that's all I'll be replying to.
As I've said before, StreetPass is neat. This article is good. The title makes no sense, as it's not a social networking service and the article doesn't even try to make that claim.
@WYLD-WOO
You can't just invent a meaning for "Contact (n.)".
What you said is not the meaning of contact(n.).
Putting the word "social" in front doesn't change that. It's just a modifier. It narrows the definition.
If you're such a fan of dictionary definitions (that you obviously don't understand) then LOOK UP THE MEANING OF THE NOUN FORM OF CONTACT.
Business or social, it's a person, business or group with whom you have MADE CONTACT and have the ability to CONTACT in the future.
I worked in direct sales for 2 years! I know what contacts are!
I get very upset when random shmucks try to re-define language, as though that will somehow win an argument for them. Twisting language in awkard, stupid ways will not make StreetPass a social networking service. It doesn't give any of the benefits of a social networking service. It doesn't have any of the fundamental, definitional properties of a social networking service.
MiiVerse is a social networking service.
StreetPass is a somewhat social computer program that's designed to encourage you to carry around your 3DS. At its core it's totally decentralised. No contact information is exchanged. There is no contact information for the feature in the first place.
By your description EMAIL is a social network. How about a forgotten notebook. Shouting in public. The walls of a urinal...
Christ... Just... UGH...
PS:
Here's another word for you to look up: sophistry.
This may not be 100% dictionary accurate, but in the philosophic community, this is common usage:
To twist words or use convoluted language in an attempt to confuse or re-direct the argument so as to be the 'victor' rather than reveal any truth.
facepalm
"and develop professional or social contacts."
Eh? EEEEH???
CONTACTS. You know, means of CONTACT. So you can CONTACT each other.
The word CONTACT (n.) MEANS SOMETHING.
"virtual social contact" that's... not a social contact. It's a computer programming script. A bit of code that does pre-determined actions.
Not CONTACT information.
@WYLD-WOO Networking is sharing information... so you can KEEP IN CONTACT in some way. "I like dogs" doesn't help you get in touch in the future.
Stop trying to mangle language. WORDS MEAN THINGS. Not everything is a matter of perspective. Streetpass != Social Networking Service.
It's just a bloody Mii exchange program that runs locally or pulls static globs of data from a central server when connected via particular IP addresses.
@KeatonTS "Networking" involves sharing contact information of some kind with multiple people, so you can all share information of some kind in the future. That's the most basic definition of "networking" in this sense. Without that "social networking" (as opposed to business networking) cannot happen. If the business cards you are given and give out has pre-set blah on it, and everything is written in disappearing ink, leaving just the company logo on it... NOT GONNA GET MUCH NETWORKING DONE.
@KeatonTS oops. misread something, removed first part. sorry
"Post" is not the same as "exchange". You can't even write your own "dream for the future" or what you "like". .
You can compose a greeting, and one-time personal messages. These are exchanged, but neither retained nor passed on to additional users.
Again:
StreetPass is barely social on its own.
There is no 'networking' in the sense of "social networking".
It's neither a good tool for social networking, nor a Social Network (those used to be called "social networking websites" just a few years back, remember. the "network" does not refer to a "computer network")
@GreatPlayer Actually, it means they might not be very good at this video game.
What I liked about the 3DS demo of this game is that it has most of the things I loved about the original Sonic games, but in 3D. The 100 rings patch makes the Wii U version more traditional, which is nice. Perhaps (if it's not in the 3DS version, haven't checked) the 3DS version will get a similar patch.
100 rings for an extra life, if nothing else, makes collecting rings more satisfying. I don't end up using continues in Sonic 1, but I do collect rings like crazy just to hear that music.
@WYLD-WOO The first kind of social networking is actually speaking with people and SHARING CONTACT INFORMATION WHICH CAN THEN BE SHARED WITH OTHERS. That is to say: actually having a conversation. "Hello" "Hello" is not social networking. It's social, but there's no networking. Sharing contact info which can then be shared again is networking. You get contacts which then those contacts can then get in contact with each other, possibly through you, possibly without your intervention. StreetPass has no networking. The term "networking" existed before the Internet(in fact, 'computer network' derives its name from that, and Internet is derived from "interconnected (computer) network(s)"), so "being online" means nothing here.
StreetPass is great. StreetPass is fun. StreetPass is not a social network, because it has no social networking. It's just a neat way to play little games and collect caricatures of people. Yay.
@WYLD-WOO
O_o how does any of that fit StreetPass?
I just don't see it. Explain.
I don't see it as either "social" or a "network".
It's a collection game if anything.

"Strong social networks can encourage healthy behaviours" wat?

This may not be 100% dictionary accurate, but in the philosophic community, this is common usage:
To twist words or use convoluted language in an attempt to confuse or re-direct the argument so as to be the 'victor' rather than reveal any truth.
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
If they're not your words, at least read them.
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@WYLD-WOO Networking is sharing information... so you can KEEP IN CONTACT in some way.
"I like dogs" doesn't help you get in touch in the future.
Stop trying to mangle language.
WORDS MEAN THINGS. Not everything is a matter of perspective.
Streetpass != Social Networking Service.
It's just a bloody Mii exchange program that runs locally or pulls static globs of data from a central server when connected via particular IP addresses.
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@Sceptic Wat?
What good would StreetPass do Ollie?
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@KeatonTS
"Networking" involves sharing contact information of some kind with multiple people, so you can all share information of some kind in the future.
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@KeatonTS
oops. misread something, removed first part.
Re: Sonic Lost World Gets Patched Up On Wii U
@GreatPlayer
Nothing sadder than a one-note troll.
Re: Sonic Lost World Gets Patched Up On Wii U
@GreatPlayer
Actually, it means they might not be very good at this video game.
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@WYLD-WOO
The first kind of social networking is actually speaking with people and SHARING CONTACT INFORMATION WHICH CAN THEN BE SHARED WITH OTHERS.
Yay.
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@NImH
Perhaps you could explain to me why you disagree with what I've said rather than resort to ad hominem attacks.
I've already said I love streetpass. Can't love it without using it, shmuck.
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@WYLD-WOO
O_o how does any of that fit StreetPass?
I just don't see it. Explain.
I don't see it as either "social" or a "network".
It's a collection game if anything.
also:
"Strong social networks can encourage healthy behaviours" wat?
Re: Parent Trap: StreetPass Makes Social Networks Social Again
@DarkCoolEdge
I'm a big fan as well.
I just don't see how it's a social network...
