I like this description from the review: "recall happy Saturday mornings spent cross-legged in front of old CRT TVs." That was definitely me, long ago.
Deathsmiles I is my all-time favorite horizontal shooter. If you've been wary of engaging with a Cave or bullet-hell game, consider giving this one a try--it's easy to beat and you'll have a fun time doing so, even if you ignore the scoring mechanics. I only wish that they included the iPhone version, which includes finding and buying weapons and items that affect various aspects of your character.
I wish the review touched on the new characters from Gothic wa Mahou Otome.
It's a fantastic reboot--I played it through several times this weekend because it was so fun. If you're not into difficult shooters, don't worry: it offers unlimited continues. And if you're into shooters, the new mechanics offer great ways to rack up high scores.
If you get the physical version from Japan and don't read Japanese, consider not upgrading to the next version. When I first popped in my physical copy, all the menus and story text were in English; after the upgrade, it will was in Japanese, with no apparent option to switch back to English.
