I have never purchased a Switch because I always strongly disliked the controller design and thought it stupid - especially with where the right Joy Con was placed, it looked really uncomfortable. HOWEVER - now that there's even more games on the Switch that I'd actually like to enjoy than were on the Wii, and know that Nintendo consoles seem to have decent lifespans (regarding the console's functionality, not support), I'm actually interested in making the investment. The two things holding me back over the last 2 years were (1) finances, and (2) speculation about the next console. (So no, actually, everyone who'd like one does NOT yet own one, thanks)
I still need more information about the next console, even after the official announcement from last month. What exactly are all the "new features" that'll be added to this next console? If I don't necessarily want or feel comfortable with all of them (i.e. rumors of predicting movement, just not cool with that, even if it is just for gameplay) can I turn them off or will I be forced to deal with them? Will Nintendo be intrusive with updates and/or other system features? (Something I've always loathed about owning an Xbox One is it's reliance on CONSTANTLY being on the internet even for games that don't need it and all the intrusive tracking, it's so dumb!) What exactly are the requirements for backwards compatibility? Will there be any games I'm personally interested in on the new system, or not? (I like single and multiplayer games, and my family and friends prefer lots of local multiplayer with many different players on a SINGLE system, not needing to purchase 3 or 4 different consoles or being limited to online for multiplayer for goodness sake!) Will the upgrade in play quality between the two actually really matter in whether I personally enjoy playing, or is it really not a factor? What's the price difference, and is it worth it to me? These are all questions I find important with this decision, and refuse to make a choice until I have answers.
If I'm comfortable and happy with the Switch 2 information and game lineup/schedule, great! I'll go ahead and get one of those, but not at launch (especially after everything I read with people later having issues with JoyCons, etc. with Switch 1 launch models and Nintendo not really helping). If I'm not happy with the information or game lineup/schedule, I'll happily settle with a Switch 1 and enjoy the games I've been eyeing on there.
I just realized this today - but if you look at 0:28 in the video, you'll notice a little guy punching the wall of the island, on the beach nearest the Rainbow Galleria...and the text says "7 Boards Included". Assuming the "7 boards included" is simply referred to just the base game, I'm willing to bet that little spot of cracked wall is going to be a DLC bonus board to make the total of boards 8. That'd be really cool if it was - Felix would be super happy.
Ask any programmer and they'll tell you - AI is a program, not some sci-fi entity; the weird fantasy idea of AI everyone has is a joke, but is politely ignored because the hype is profiting those who are using or building it. A human being has to put in input to get an output. Saying AI "art" is "not human work" is like saying digital art is not technically human work, because they're using an art program. A human has to put in those inputs. But with AI it's more of a problem; at least digital art requires you to actually do art - art not being the result, but the process itself. Hence why people say things like "the art of making a game", etc. With AI, the person putting in the inputs isn't even doing that. With AI, it's taking those inputs, running them through a database of images - other people's hard work - that were accumulated from the internet without artist awareness or consent, pulls various elements out of the pictures, and frankenstien stitches it together into a mess of copy pasted work with filters, depending on the prompt. If you yank pages out of a ton of books and put them together into a "new" book, it's not your writing - it's the stolen writing style, hard work & research, creativity, and intellectual property of all those authors that you are refusing to get consent from and give credit to for your own gain. It's wrong, and it needs to stop. Best case scenario AI "art" generators require artists to opt-IN to the program - so requiring consent without unfairly burdening the artist - with legally required credit to the artists the program is pulling from.
@Ulysses My thinking exactly - I literally only check NintendoLife/game news and am holding off on buying my first Switch because I want to know what the next one has to offer. If it's backwards compatible, runs physical games, and runs smoother - fantastic, I'll buy it and be happy. But if not and the Switch's stock is gone by the time the next one releases - not only am I not buying, I'm missing out on an entire console generation of games, because as I noted in my own comment - I only recently decided the Switch is worth the absurd price because of the library it's got. There's enough games on it that I'd quite like to play that I think it's worth it, despite my sincere dislike of the console's joy cons and how overpriced a pro-controller is. If the next console isn't backwards compatible, I'm not interested, and I don't trust ebay sellers to list both a reasonable price and a genuinely good condition Switch - so I'd be out of luck in that case. All in all, I think announcing it this year would be the genious thing to do - because if people want the Switch 2, they'll get it - if not, they'll get a Switch for the games already on it. Win-win, and they'd make a lot off of it. But I'm not counting on it.
I hope it's sooner than later, but I doubt it. I personally find this whole thing frustrating because I only recently became interested in purchasing a Switch - as in this last October. Initially I rejected the Switch because of the controllers - they look so unnatural to hold and use given the placement of the joysticks and buttons. However, the system has got such a good log of games, I am willing to forgive the controllers (and how overpriced the pro controller is, no way I'm using the joy cons) to enjoy said games, especially since most of the games I'm interested in are physical (refuse to "buy" digital games, I've been burned by that scam one too many times with consoles crashing or needing repairs, thanks). But here's the snag - why on earth would I buy the current Switch, if the next one has backwards compatibility and runs smoother? I am holding off because I don't want to make the wrong investment of hard earned money - especially in this economy, I'm not in any position to be throwing money around. But that leaves me worried - are they going to just vanish the Switch like they did the WiiU? Because if the successor is digital only, or isn't backwards compatible, and they just sell out the Switch stock they have left - I'll have missed out entirely and won't be interested in purchasing a used one off ebay (too sketchy for such an expensive investment, I have no idea what flaws the listing may have and/or may not be mentioned). Really irritating overall, can't wait for this whole hype to be done with to be honest.
