@abgar the game is very different - it takes the bare bones from the original story but that's about it. More of a 're-imagining' than a remake. And of course the gameplay is totally different.
It's basically a (slightly) interactive novel. A fantastic story, and my favourite game on the DS bar-none, but a story nonetheless. They shouldn't have mixed things up with too much gameplay. D-pad only would have worked fine.
I think it's a mistake to read this whole Greenpeace thing as an attack on Nintendo, or as a claim that Nintendo's consoles are in any way inferior to Sony's or Microsoft's - in the original story, Greenpeace published a huge list of companies that were either being environmentally unfriendly or hadn't kept to their emission-cut targets. Nintendo happened to be at the bottom, but there was nothing in the original story that singled Nintendo out particularly - it's not some kind of targeted assault.
Plus, Nintendo failed to meet the emission-cuts they themselves committed to making. Let's face it, that's not good...
I remember when I told my Mum about Pokemon before its release waay back in 1997 (I think) - I was like, "yeah, you capture these animals, and then you make them fight each other. If yours wins, you get money and your animals get a bit stronger..."
The thing I like about this game is that it isn't an homage to retro-gaming; it is actual, real-life authentic-from-the-past retro gaming! It's like finding lost treasure... or something.
It seems every few months I'm overcome with nostalgia and feel the need to hear all these tunes again. Gerudo valley and the zora's domain have to be my favourites, but don't quote me on that because I'll just remember one I like better two seconds later...
I really want this game to be good. It's going to be tricky though, getting a good enough translation/voice acting job done on the story that it doesn't drag the game down, but there's no reason it can't be done! And the price tag is very good news.

Re: Review: Jambo! Safari (DS)
As an aside, the exclamation point in Jambo! Safari makes it very hard to say aloud!
