@Cashews Regrettably art has always been about commercialism to some extent—not 'outsider art' but that is a different topic of discussion. Capitalism is the substrate on which the world runs. As the philosopher Zizek says, "Its easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism". All writers want to be read, just as all artists want to be seen—it's a foundational quality of human nature—to want to be seen. Capitalism eats everything, devours it, then regurgitates some new fangled rendition. Granted, the results vary but sometimes we have to make do with what we get. If a child goes to the VG museum because of Pokemon, then goes home interested in VG's work and it inspires them to continue investigating, I count that as a victory. Capitalism is a dire state of existence no doubt but it's all there is. I've taught the arts for decades and what I've learnt is that the most important thing is to just get the student through the door—once they are inside you have the opportunity to nurture that initial curiosity and help it grow.
@Cashews Such a sardonic view of the artist and creativity. What fault can there possibly be in introducing children to the works of Van Gogh. The more interest there is in the arts, the better. As for Kafka —the writer doesn't always know best— that's the job of a good editor and good publisher. Kafka wasn't concerned about fame and commercialisation—he suffered from crippling depression and self doubt.
@Grumblevolcano I think it's far too early to tell whether it was a mistake, or not. Time will give us that answer in due course. But as someone who has both Xbox consoles under their roof, the difference between them (so far) is negligible, and very much dependent on the screen you are using them with.
I'll throw my 2 pence into the wishing well and predict that the Switch may very well go the same way as the Xbox. That is, an all singing all dancing mainline model - and a supporting budget model. Both being able to play the exact same games, albeit differing frame rates, install sizes, and resolutions. A genius approach. The same games but two totally different economic lines. If this is indeed the decision, then Sony is the odd one.
@johnvboy That’s a very valid point. The full immersion, disconnection from reality, is not for everyone. Which is why I wonder whether mixed reality (augmented reality) is going to be the real launchpad towards mass adoption.
@oatmaster Depending on the individual of course, but I find it’s more so the horizontal panning that causes motion sickness. Forwards motion is pretty comfortable (and exhilarating) - even horizontal panning in 2D films creates noticeable dropped frames (24 FPS in Pal) - watch any film that has left/right panning and you’ll see what I mean. It jutters as the camera moves left to right. Forward motion feels okay
With MK9 being a questionable business move for Nintendo, profit wise - given the steady sales of MK8. The best mid ground seems DLC - keeps the players happy and doesn’t cannibalise sales from MK8

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch 'Pro' Reveal Expected Before E3, Out This Year
@TSR3 That sounds a very reasonable prediction.
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch 'Pro' Reveal Expected Before E3, Out This Year
@TSR3 Very true. Correct me if I'm wrong, but to my understanding, there's no significant power (such as frames per second) difference between.

@johnvboy A bit like the computer then...
“There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” Ken Olsen, 1977
Future trends are impossible to predict. Nearly everyone who tries to predict the direction technology will take, gets it wrong.

Re: House Of The Dead: Remake Shoots To Switch Later This Year
There’s a light gun style game on ‘51 Worldwide Games’ that uses a single joy con held vertically. The experience is surprisingly good.
