  • First Impressions Let's Hitchhike!

Nippon Ichi delivers an oddball game as only the Japanese can.

It's literally called Let's Zenryoku Hitchihaiku!!!!!!!!! (yes nine exclamations!), which I guess you could translate as Let's Totally Hitchhike, Dude! (the "Dude" is my personal addition) and it's a recent release to the Japanese WiiWare service which I just had to try out...

  • News More Wii horror from Grudge director Shimizu

Takashi Shimizu is working on a game adaption of his classic Ju-On film series

Who doesn’t love having the pants scared off of them? There's nothing more exhilarating than the feeling! That’s why it’s welcome news that Takashi Shimizu is working on a new horror game for the Wii, which is tentatively called 'Feel'. It’s based on his hit...

  • Nintendo Download 14 April 2009 (Japan)

Another week, another 5 releases for Japan.

It's true the Japanese have another week with a mix of VC and WiiWare content, but Wii owners in North America and Europe need not feel the usual pangs of jealousy (well, I guess that depends on how much you've been wanting to see a couple of these...). On the WiiWare front we have a couple of things that...

  • First Impressions Puzzle Bobble Wii

Taito delivers another enjoyable update to an arcade franchise.

For those who aren't familiar Puzzle Bobble is a late-90s arcade puzzle franchise from Taito featuring Baburun and Boburun from Bubble Bobble. Fans in the rest of the world may remember this game better as the ill-titled "Bust-A-Move." It's had five arcade iterations, two of...

  • News A DSi You Cannot Object To

Capcom and Nintendo team up to bring a special edition Ace Attorney DSi to Japan.

Fans of the Ace Attorney series will probably go wild at the prospect of owning the recently announced limited edition DSi that features the emblem of the game's police force, Taihokun. Over the years the series has been going from strength to strength, and now has 4...

  • Nintendo Download 7th April 2009 (Japan)

Another games tsunami hits the Japanese Wii Shop!

You know I just bought 6000 Wii points for the PAL service expecting a ton of new WiiWare and Virtual Console Arcade titles to appear imminently. I may be somewhat impatient, but it's extra disheartening to see two single-release Fridays in a row and then the nearly non-stop flood of content hitting...

  • First Impressions Kimi to Boku to Rittai (You, Me and Shape)

Nintendo surprises by publishing this off-beat balance game from Fyto.

When I saw there was a bonus WiiWare update in Japan for some reason I was intrigued to see both games were from Nintendo. I was even more intrigued with the look of one of them: Kimi to Boku to Rittai (You, Me and Shape). The visual style and sparse soundscape reminded me of...

  • News Japanese Releases 31 March 2009

    More? They get more?!?

Incredibly after a super Thursday in Japan which saw a six title release on the brand new Virtual Console Arcade and two new WiiWare releases from Nintendo, Japanese Wii owners are still getting two new WiiWare releases and two new VC releases! I hope the rest of the world gets treated equally well for a change. WiiWare...

  • News Japanese Virtual Console list - April 2009

Lots of big surprises for Japan next month - Multiple famous game series are going to get another installment on their VC very soon. Of course this includes some Nintendo offerings as well!

The full list for April (And the last update of March) in Japan is as follows: Famicom: Takeshi no Chousenjou (March 31st) Castlevania III: Dracula's...

  • News Surprise Japanese WiiWare Released Today

Two new WiiWare releases from Nintendo as well as six releases for the new Virtual Console Arcade

What's been widely reported is that the Japanese Virtual Console Arcade got six releases today compared to the four released in the rest of the world (Return of Ishtar, Gaplus, Emeraldia, Space Harrier, Star Force and Solvalou). What's not been widely...

  • News 6 New DSiWare Titles Coming to Japan

The beginning of April will see the release of the DSi in three regions, and a whole load of new releases in a fourth.

The good news: Japan is getting six releases at once, which might (underline might) suggest that DSiWare won't suffer as easily from the one-per-week schedules that sometimes affect WiiWare and the Virtual Console. Perhaps the...

  • News Korogashi Puzzle Katamari Comes to DSiWare!

According to Famitsu, Korogashi Puzzle Katamari will be DSiWare's entry in the tremendously popular (and tremendously fun) Katamari series. But it won't look a lot like its bigger brothers.

Korogashi Puzzle Katamari looks (and appears to play) very similar to Pac-Attack, but you can judge for yourself by watching the trailer below. The game should...

  • News DSiWare Wants You to Mind Your Manners

Another DSiWare game is coming to Japan this spring, and it looks...interesting.

Kuukiyomi is the name of the game, although it seems more like an interactive etiquette course than a proper game. That's not to say it's a bad idea; watch the trailer. It's positively fascinating. And if they can actually make the lessons in good manners fun (it's...

  • News Major League Eating Coming to Japan Next Week

Looks like Nintendo Japan has been feeling a little awkward by showering download titles upon the Japanese population whilst Europe and North America have to make due with what's slowly rationed out to them. At last the jealousy can ease a little!

Next week only two releases, both of them WiiWare: Major League Eating -- 500pts (half the price of...

  • News Phantasy Star Zero Mini Coming to DSiWare

Looking for another big franchise to dip a toe in the waters of DSiWare? Well, Sega's got your number.

The Phantasy Star series is set to release a DSiWare installment in the form of Phantasy Star Zero Mini. Japan will receive the game sometime this month, and while there's no assurance that it will see an English-language release, we can...

  • News More DSiWare? Hudson to the Rescue!

Or maybe not. At least, not yet... Sudoku Beginner 50 and Sudoku 150 are upcoming Sudoku downloads for the DSi, courtesy of our good friends at Hudson.

Now we here at WiiWare World can't read Japanese (our lifelong shame!) and there's only so much we're able to glean about this game. But since the "Beginner 50" version is selling for 200...

  • News New Golf Game Coming To Japanese WiiWare Next Week

Arc System Works is bringing out what appears to be the sole new WiiWare release on the Japanese service next Tuesday, a game centred around golf putting called Okiraku Pata-Gorufu (Family Golf Putter). You're able to choose from four characters (a cute anime family rendered in cel-animation style) and try to putt your ball into a series of holes doing various trick shots. Wiimote control only with use of a simple arm swing after setting shot power to get the ball rolling appears to be the interface. The game will be 500 points, we expect Aksys Games will publish this in North America and Europe sometime later this year.

    ...

  • First Impressions Rainbow Islands Towering Adventure!

Rainbow Islands has been selected as the 3rd of Taito's Collection on WiiWare; it seems natural given that it's the arcade sequel to Bubble Bobble, the previous release

I'm old enough to have seen the arcade game, but I guess I frequented the wrong arcades because I never laid eyes on this game until I bought the Bubble Bobble collection on the...

  • News Rainbow Islands Out in Japan Tomorrow

I'm pretty sure a lot of people expected a WiiWare update of this game after Bubble Bobble Wii (Plus outside of Japan) came out, but who could have suspected it would be released only a few weeks later? Well, it's coming out in Japan tomorrow for 800 points and I don't think I need to tell you I'll be downloading this and providing my impressions soon.

The game is titled Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure and looking at the screens it appears the kids have grown a bit taller and instead of a score you're ranked according to time and height scaled. Hopefully it will be a...

  • News Japanese Virtual Console list - March 2009

Even Japan seems to be getting less and less VC games - Only 7 games will be released in March! There's two surprises this time - One's a great game which was thought to be stuck in licensing hell, while the other's a legendary Japan-only game which is commonly thought to be one of the worst games ever made!

The full list is as follows: Famicom:...

  • First Impressions Mr. Driller World

The plucky arcade star comes to WiiWare!

The gameplay is so simple you would be right to wonder why a game like this wasn't released for the Atari 2600, and this is a large part of the attraction and part of the novelty: the idea of what is essentially a classic arcade game being released in 1999 when arcade games were almost exclusively lightgun...

  • News Mr Driller Tunnelling His Way To WiiWare and DSiWare

According to the latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu, Namco is set to release a new version of its successful Mr Driller franchise on the Japanese WiiWare service this month.

Entitled Mr Driller World, the game will retail for 800 Wii Points and should be digging its way to sunlight on the 24th February. In addition to this, another Mr Driller...

  • First Impressions Bubble Bobble Plus!

Bub and Bob hit the WiiWare service in style.

I've got a confession to make, and it's not that I don't like Bubble Bobble, because I do like it and the two arcade follow-ups: Bubble Symphony and Bubble Memories. No, I actually want to confess that I didn't want to buy or play this game tonight. Now, like everyone else I saw the announcement which...

  • First Impressions Overturn

Whilst many of us are used to WiiWare games consisting of puzzle games and the very odd platformer, we are starting to see some more ambitious games.

Overturn is one of these, a 3D arena-based robot fighting game which features not only 2-player split screen and a single player story (tournament) mode, but online play with up to four players --...

  • News Bubble Bobble Plus Out On WiiWare Next Week

...If you are in Japan of course! Yes that’s right, no sooner than Bubble Bobble Wii was announced now it is dated for release on Tuesday, 10th February on Nintendo of Japan’s website.

The game will have 200 maps, 100 for the original game and another 100 in the arrange mode. Taking into account the two difficulty settings this makes a mighty...

  • First Impressions Pole's Big Adventure

I have a confession to make. I hate platforming games.

I think outside of sports games they must be my least favourite genre. So why would I be interested in a game like Pole's Adventure, which is very much a mishmash of 8-bit platformers? Well, because it takes the piss out of them fantastically of course! I think it's safe to say that if you...

  • News Japanese Virtual Console list - February 2009

It's that time of the month again! Time to see what VC games Japan will be getting next month. Not much surprises this time really - Square Enix continues its support with a Japan-exclusive game, while Sega releases another game in their original mascot's franchise. Nothing really too stunning this time though! Two new games which could potentially be released elsewhere are on the list too.

The complete VC list for Japan in February is as follows: Famicom: Formation Z (Februar...

  • News Pole's Big Adventure Coming To Japanese WiiWare

What do you get when you cross the original Super Mario Bros. game with some extremely over-the-top risque humor? You basically get Sega's upcoming Japanese WiiWare title Pole's Big Adventure. Yes, you read that correctly. The character's name is Pole. And if you're dirty mind immediately thought of a certain male appendage, you're on the right track.

Pole's Big Adventure looks to be a very standard NES-like (or dare we say Master System?) platformer title on the outside, but if you look deeper you'll find a game that will basically push the envelope for crude humor and just from looking at early screenshots of the game...

  • News Pop Them, Drop Them SameGame Hits Japan Next Week

It's time for another Hudson WiiWare game! The oddly named Pop Them, Drop Them SameGame, based on the old PC game SameGame will be available in Japan next Tuesday.

Costing a mere 500 Wii Points this simply seems to be an update of the classic game, featuring upgraded graphics, (presumably) music and multiplayer modes. Of course there are also some...

  • News Japanese Virtual Console list - January 2009

After a somewhat lackluster December, Nintendo of Japan has decided to start the new year with a rather good month. Aside from one of the most wanted N64 games, the general theme seems to be sequels - There's a lot of them planned for January!

The full schedule is as follows: Famicom: Tantei Jinguji Saburo Kikena Faturi (January 6th) Getsu Fuuma...

  • News Art Style Continues on DSiWare

Exciting times for fans of the Art Style series - Nintendo of Japan has just revealed that two more games will be headed to DSiWare. They will be launched alongside the DSiWare service in Japan this Wednesday! Both games don't seem to be based on any of the bit Generations titles for GBA, and are completely new.

In Art Style: Aquario you are...

  • News Japanese Virtual Console list - December 2008

It doesn't look like Japan's going to get much of a holiday treat - There's only one notable game to speak of being released the whole month, and pretty much all of the other games were never released in the west! There's only 10 titles lined up for the month in total, which is also a surprisingly low amount.

The full schedule for December is as...

  • News LostWinds Coming To Japanese WiiWare In December

While the US, Europe, and Australia have been enjoying Frontier's amazing WiiWare launch title LostWinds for quite some time now, Japanese gamers have had to sit back and wait in anticipation that eventually the game might see a release in Japan.

Now thanks to famed rpg giant Square-Enix, the game will finally see a release in the land of the rising...

  • News Japanese Virtual Console list - November 2008

November actually has quite a few surprises in store for Japan. Although there are no new Nintendo 64, Neo Geo or MSX games, Japanese Wii owners will soon be able to download Mega Man 3, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Master System), and the next Square Enix game, among others.

Slot Car Racing is set for release...

  • News Everybody's Theater Coming To Japanese WiiWare

It seems Japanese Wii owners are getting yet another perk not likely to be seen outside of Japan in the form of FujiSoft's Minna no Theater (Everybody's Theater) this December.

Minna no Theater will allow Japanese Wii owners to stream television shows, anime, and movies on their Wii consoles. The downside is that the software alone will cost 500 Wii...

  • News Overturn Coming To Japanese WiiWare

The official web site for Studio Zan's upcoming WiiWare title Overturn has gone live, although portions of the site are still labeled as "Coming Soon" on various pages.

The game is due out on the WiiWare service in Japan sometime in November. No price has been set as of yet, but the game will contain three different modes of play...

  • News Tecmo's Latest WiiWare Project is a Monkey-Spanking Simulator

The Toyko Game Show was so full of glitz and glamour that many titles fell by the wayside and probably didn't get the attention they deserved. Tecmo's Playshake would appear to be one such title.

From what we can gather it's a collection of mini games (which appear to have online ranking modes) that focus on waggling the Wii Remote like a fool...

  • News Boom Tapper Coming To Japanese WiiWare

With the severe lack of puzzle titles available for the WiiWare service (yeah, right), it's obviously going to be quite refreshing to see a new entry come to light. Developer Alpha Unit is currently getting ready to release their new boom box-infused puzzler Boom Tapper in Japan on November 11th for 500 Wii Points.

In Boom Tapper your job is to...

  • News Tetris Party Released On WiiWare In Japan

Update: Tetris Party is now confirmed on the official site to...

  • News WiiWare Announcement Blowout - Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands and More

Shortly ater the recent press conference in Japan, Nintendo released a few lists of upcoming games. While they already announced their new DS and Wii games, they didn't announce any WiiWare games during the conference, which means that the WiiWare list would most likely be very interesting.

As it turns out, it is - a whopping 50 WiiWare titles by...

  • News Japanese Virtual Console list - October 2008

Next month's Japanese VC list isn't a pretty sight - You can easily see that even in Japan, the amount of released games is quickly decreasing. Only 9 games will be released in the entire month! There are some gems in the lot, but it's still pretty disappointing to see.

Their full list of upcoming games for October is as follows: Famicom:...

  • News Major League Eating Coming to Japan, With New Characters

  • News Wii Chess Comes to WiiWare in Japan

If you keep up with retail Wii games, you're probably aware that way back in January, Europe got the game Wii Chess, which was basically just chess (With Wi-Fi) at the price of a budget title. Nintendo never announced the title for release in any other region - Not even Australia - Until now!

Next week, Japanese players can download the renamed...
