The latest UK boxed charts data is here (after a short delay) and as expected, EA's FIFA 23 has taken the top spot, knocking Splatoon 3 down a peg after several weeks at number one.
This first place securement can't really be attributed to Switch, mind, with the Nintendo console only making up 6% of total sales (PS5 brought in 41%, PS4 - 30%, and Xbox One produced 17%). This should come as no surprise, with the Switch once again receiving few updates with the game's Legacy Edition, we can't see the incentive to get out there and buy it - as is reflected in our unimpressed 2/10 review.
Elsewhere, this week has seen the Return of the Jedi, if you will, as Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has shot back into third position after spending the past few weeks at the bottom of the chart or off it completely.
Of course, it wouldn't be the UK charts without the big names hanging around, and this week once again sees strong numbers for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo Switch Sports, Minecraft, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Pokémon Legends: Arceus - will they ever slow down?
That's quite enough from us, so without further ado, here's your look at the top ten for this week:

Goodness, people need to stop buying these cash grabs
Om my God, people really buy this on Switch? 😂
Ah yes, UK as usual wants the latest f00tie game
They are really have bad taste in gaming for playing FIFA games all the time.
Pity of them.
@Nintendo4Sonic Not many, only 6% of sales
What an awful game. At least Splatoon 3 was built from the ground up.
Genuinely curious how the game will sell once the FIFA name drops from the title starting next year.
FIFA!!!!!!! ** shakes fist **
At this point, EA's sports games might as well be shovelware, considering they just keep releasing the EXACT SAME GAME year after year. Saddest part about it though is that EA keeps making money over them because stupid Americans keep buying the Madden games and stupid Brits keep buying the FIFA games.
A great game outsold by a terrible one ....Never seen that before.

How can you say this with a straight face lol.
Especially when Splatoon 3 looks identical to 2. There is no doubt assets were reused as well as the same engine it was built on.
Well, football mania is a-comin' so... not surprised.
@Nintendo4Sonic Yep, and they are the same people who buy GTA 5 as part of their weekly ordeal
@iLikeUrAttitude So if a game uses the same engine as the previous one, it's a rehash? Interesting.
Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, ARMS...all run in the same engine.
And....I'd actually kind of hope they'd use the same engine for Splatoon 3? Otherwise that's a whole load of unnecessary work.
Not surprised. It’s FIFA and UK. Splatoon 3 still good in 2nd after all this time.

FIFA ain't good but I need people to react the same way when new NBA2K games come out cuz they're just as bad.

You could've at least tried to read my comment properly without resorting to such an obvious strawman.
I just said that Splatoon 3 definitely reused assets as a response to someone saying that Splatoon 3 was built from the ground up (which obviously isn't true).
I genuinely don't get how you got that I was comparing Fifa to Splatoon in my comment despite not mentioning it anywhere.
@Ability-King-KK word
Gamers: "This game is garbage. We deserve better." Game sells millions of copies. EA: "They hate it, yet they keep buying. Keep on keeping on."
FIFA being in 1st was inevitable though it'll be interesting to see how things change with the FIFA license gone next year. I'm guessing EA Sports FC will go the eFootball route of FTP.
It's nice seeing Splatoon 3 continue to do very well, I hope there's still monthly Splatfests like the previous games and that they increase the frequency of tricolor turf war.
@Yosher
There will be a lot of confused parents come next Christmas.

@Grumblevolcano
EA will still have all the leagues and teams so the only difference really is the name. If they market the hell out of it to hammer home the new name then should be business as usual.
@Ability-King-KK
Take it you are a big fan of all those wildly different Pokemon games?
@iLikeUrAttitude you’re speaking the truth. But this site is dedicated to the combination of Nintendo lovers and EA haters. There isn’t any logic and the site knew exactly how this post was going to go. 99.9% EA hate comments.
Honest question:
If you had a kid who loves football, and you don't have any of the FIFA games in your collection. Then why wouldn't you buy it?
Of course, I know that all the FIFA games sucks on the switch, and so does 23....
But still, if "you" would go out and buy a switch today and would like a football game with the updated teams, why wouldn't you do that?
Again, I understand the hate, but just not for the new players or owners of a switch 🤷🏻♂️
@sixrings It's amazing how you can write a normal sentence on this site and people can just misrepresent everything you just said.
It reminds me of this tweet I saw a while back lol.

@Anti-Matter Or, maybe just let people enjoy the games they like?
For all the people wondering why people would buy this, just remember that not everybody who owns a switch is like you. The majority of the fan base doesn’t know that the new fifa ( on switch) is just a rehash. More than likely they just want to play the new fifa, or they are getting it for their kids.
To be clear, I don’t think that this idea of rehashing games is good, just trying to see it from another point of view.
Why do people continue to buy these every year? And who is buying these, with every single person instructing them to stay away? It's clear that EA doesn't care about the Switch, and they continue to release crippled versions that are no different from each other. Do people really want a $60 roster update every year? Is that it?
@Nintendo4Sonic yep. That’s why EA can keep doing what they are doing. It’s a win win for them. If people don’t buy it then they can say switch gamers don’t like fifa and not give us a game at all.
What an awful game. At least FIFA was built from the ground up.
@KindofaBigDeal Either that or they're going to be picking up the latest FIFA game next year.
Which would still be FIFA 23 probably, unless the company who's gonna carry the FIFA game torch actually puts FIFA in the name next year too.
Proof that a game doesn't need to be good to sell well
Perhaps people buy this only to have the right to complain
Better value for money than Mario Strikers Battle League for sure, with nice discount very soon (I'm not being sarcastic).
Oh wow, Xbox only outsold the switch version 3 to 1. How the mighty have a fallen
If people want to spend their money on rubbish that's up to them. I only give my money to developers who I feel deserve it. FIFA on Switch isn't a complete game so why people insist on buying this version is just beyond me. Even if Switch was their only device you'd think they would stick to their Principles.
@Anti-Matter Have to agree. FIFA is just the same game every year with little to no changes made at all plus to top it off the Switch version of FIFA is only a quarter or half a game as opposed to every other version being the full version.
With the lazy ass version they put out on the Switch, 6% is still too much! Screw you EA!!!

@Would_you_kindly I mean kind of moot point. Good games can sell good and sell bad. Bad games can sell good or bad. The same applies to movies. Look up how well Iron Giant did in the Box Office.
The game quality itself is half the battle. The rest is all about marketing and how well you can attract people to buy your game which is just as important if not more important then the actual game because what is the point of making the most amazing game ever if you only attract 12 people and it’s a flop where you didn’t even break even?
It also helps that this is THE Soccer game and there isn’t really competition for this. At least Pokemon had all sorts of Pokémon clones to compete with over the years.
People really buy FIFA on switch???
@JohnnyMix 6% in UK so yeah not very much lol. Wouldn’t surprise me if UK has more people that got Mario Strikers instead for Switch
@iLikeUrAttitude How can you say with a straight face that Splatoon 3 looks identical to Splatoon 2?
Wow really? IGN gave it like a 2/10 and crapped all over their no effort. Amazes me the things people will buy.

By comparing the games and seeing how they look, I meant that statement in the most literal sense possible.
I was talking about the differences between the games content wise, just its pure graphical fidelity and pointing out that Splatoon 3 does indeed reuse assets.
And before this sparks into another argument, no there is nothing wrong with that and almost every developer does this, I ask you to refer to the original comment I was replying to for the full context.
I'm more interested in the jump from 10th to 3rd of LEGO Star Wars. Was there a sale or something?
Hey UK 🇬🇧!!! It’s time we had a talk…
@iLikeUrAttitude Hard to argue with narcissist.. better save your time imo
I just don’t get why EA doesn’t make Madden or NHL for the Switch. Even if a nerfed version, it would probably at least sell as well as FIFA, if not better.
@Yosher Yeah, especially if other companies can start using licensed players, kits etc.
I am a 90s kid and I remember there being so many different football games that had licensed names, some good and some bad but the competition pushed innovation
People are passionate about the sport and want to play as their favourite team and EA has basically exploited this love, first by buying exclusive rights and second their lack of effort.
@Yosher Yeah it'd be interesting to see how things turn out if EA Football club sandwich had to compete with a FiFA licensed game next year.
Mind that this is boxed only charts, not digital. Xbox and PC users tend to buy way more digital than Playstation/Nintendo users. Only hardcore Fifa fans (or new to the platform) would buy every disc version of the same game (with updated rosters) 5 times though,
I'm not sure how representative are boxed charts anymore
@rockodoodle True Madden on PS Vita was pretty decent (even though i still can't understand how this game is played exactly cause i'm not American)
Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's coooold out there today!
Not surprised at all because soccer is the most important matter for UK people.
@Magician It's not really "gamers" but instead the "casuals" who keep on buying this game, along with parents who just buy it because their kid likes sports, so it's an easy gift and stuff.
