Solo developer Evan Tor has showcased an upcoming Metroidvania titled Rebel Transmute, currently live on Kickstarter. The project has successfully passed its basic funding goal, but needs an extra push to secure a release on the Switch. At the time of writing, the funding currently sits at $21,114 and needs to hit $24,000 to bag its Switch port, so that's a little under $3000 required from backers with 7 days remaining.
Rebel Transmute is a 2D pixelated Metroidvania inspired by Super Metroid and Hollow Knight, featuring "vast interconnected areas, interweaving story lines, a slew of game changing abilities, and engaging combat". You take on the role of Moon Mikono who is on a mission to discover the circumstances surrounding her mother's disappearance.
As you progress through the game, you gain augments, which will allow you to customise Moon with new gadgets, abilities, and even summon minions.
Here's are the key feature's from the game's Kickstarter page:
- Experience a subversive story and detailed lore, following Moon Mikono and a colorful cast of characters on their own personal journeys.
- Customize your playstyle. Use augments to summon minions, gain new abilities, alter the HUD, assist in combat, or even transform your core abilities!
- Explore and map a vast labyrinth of research labs, alien cave systems, and striking sci-fi vistas.
- Battle over a dozen bosses in intricate, challenging fights that'll test your skill and your loadout.
Rebel Transmute's Kickstarter page also highlights a further stretch goal at $27,000, which will allow Tor to build an expanded OST for the game if successfully funded.

Hmm, the Switch could do with a pixelart Metroidvania....
Only joking, I have backed it. Looks great!
I can see some pretty clear Axiom Verge influences, I approve.
Ransoming Switch players and no physical? no thanks
Come on guys, step it up. This console is very short on Metroidvania-likes right now. Rookie numbers people!!
I say that but I could play these kind of games until the cows come home 🤣
@Bunkerneath I mean, when you look at it that way he's ransoming everyone.
But for real though, this is basically the ideal Kickstarter. He's a kid trying to solo develop and publish his first real game. He's got a ton of work to show already and is just trying to get to the finish line.
This looks great!
Sell it on Steam. Once it makes enough money, then port it to Switch.
Is this game gorgeous though? Cuphead, ori, ninja saviors, new shantae, sure I can say they're gorgeous, but this? Nah.
Looks like this will be my Axiom Verge 3 after playing and completing Axiom Verge 2.
@wiiware Agreed. Not much parallax going on, very flat-feeling out of the box. Maybe it'll get dressed up by release but I'm not convinced. Feels more like an NES Metroid game than a SNES Metroid game.
How are they struggling to get a Switch dev kit, when games like coloring a dinosaur get an easy pass to get published? WTF?
This looks awesome. Day 1 for me.
@Ooccoo_Jr I'm doing like a 32 bit metroidvania hopefully people like it. In my game you play as a Knight and a Demon and you switch between. I don't want to give too much away until I'm ready to show it.
@Jokerwolf Sounds good to me
mmmmmmmmmehhhhh pass.
Ah, yes. Retmoid. Starring the renowned bounty hunter Amus Saran.
Seriously though, I'm not one to criticize a game for being inspired by another, but this one doesn't distinguish itself too much from its clear inspiration.
@calbeau : After watching the trailer, I wholeheartedly agree.
This is derivative to the extent of plagiarism.
I'll concede that it's a nice-looking game, but why would people settle for something like this when Metroid Dread exists on the platform?
@Silly_G I think I actually would call parts of it plagiarism. The enemies around the 0:57 second mark in the trailer are literally just Metroids.
I've recently started attempting to make my own indie games, so I can appreciate the work, and I'm far from being opposed to inspiration, but this almost looks like a mod for Super Metroid rather than an original game.
Still, why do hard working indie devs struggle to get a Switch dev kit?
Have u seen all the asset flip games?!
@LiquidNinja
Metroidvanias, Souls-likes, Rogue-likes. Seems that's pretty much the breadth of the industry right now.
Just what the Switch was seriously lacking in! A new pixel art Metroidvania. We haven't had one in since... Oooh... ten minutes?
@sword_9mm And JRPGs and farming sims.
Fighting games, 3D platformers, non-kart racers, FPS titles and many other interesting styles of games are severely lacking on Switch.
Beats spending years on someone else's IP like ASMR or that Super Mario Bros. 5 fan game...if only barely.
Good luck to the developer, but I would have liked to see something a bit more original.
That being said, I pretty much will play any Metroidvania so if it secures release on a platform that's available to me and the price is right, I'll bite.
Can you really call that a Metroidvania? Isn’t it just a Metroid-like?
