With the likes of Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3, and Sonic Frontiers launching in the coming weeks and months, you might have forgotten that a little game called Dragon Quest Treasures will be making its way to the Switch on December 9th, 2022.
Although billed as a Dragon Quest spin-off during Nintendo's own Direct Mini showcase earlier this year, Treasures nevertheless features a boatload of characters, locations, and monsters to discover, and Square-Enix has now lifted the lid on some more of the game's core mechanics.
Primarily, we're treated to a deep dive into the world of monster recruitment. Monsters dotted around the land of Draconia can be battled by protagonists Erik and Mia; once defeated, some might be willing to join your party and provide unique abilities to help you on our quest. Monsters are designated a colour depending on their rarity, including bronze, silver, gold, and rainbow. The rainbow-coloured Monsters are the rarest and as such may prove the most difficult to recruit.
Square-Enix also elaborated on the types of Monsters you'll be recruiting. First up is a unique character called Oozabella, a cute pink slime that can always be found wearing an adorable yellow bow. In addition, we get a glimpse at the Fiery Dragling, the Stormy Sabrecat, and the Valhalla Vulture. You can check out each of these Monsters in the below images.
Finally, we also get a good look at a mechanic known as 'Fortes', which are unique Monster abilities that will help Erik and Mia navigate the dangerous land of Draconia. These include the Launch Forte, which allows Erik and Mia to reach high ledges, The Glide Forte to cover great distances and avoid fall damage, The Sprint Forte for rapid land traversal, the Stealth Forte to dive below ground and avoid the keen eyes of the enemies, and finally the Scan Forte, which will be crucial for locating key crafting materials.
Previously, Square-Enix provided a healthy dose of information on Dragon Quest Treasures' two protagonists, Erik and Mia, so be sure to check that out and get fully caught up. For more screenshots, we've compiled some of the best in our comprehensive gallery to fuel your hype train. Hopefully we'll get a bit more information in the coming weeks ahead of the game's December 9th launch - hey, maybe a new trailer, Square-Enix?

Okay, so there’s combat, light platforming, and crafting but… to what end? I still do not understand what the basic gameplay cycle is supposed to be.
My kid is excited for this. And I'll probably quite enjoy it too.
@Munchlax
The core of the game is treasure hunting, the things like monster recruitment through combat, crafting, and light platforming are a means to finding treasure.
This game will be so much fun, I'm sure about it.
This game seems like the definitive example of a skippable game.
Enjoyed the DQ Joker games so hopefully this is similar

Shame the character models are blurry and the overall graphic presentation is very basic and flat.

Is this Pokemon style Dragon Quest game?

I like the look of this - very much a fan of all things Dragon Quest Warrior Monsters! please bring back or remake the originals from the GB! or continue the Joker series! I know I'm asking for too much
@Narvhal I've played all of the mainline DQ games (except X), but never really knew what Monsters or Joker were — is this basically a spiritual successor to those?
the monster uses in this sound like synergy uses in Golden Sun, which I am liking the sound of
I've played and loved all the mainline Dragon Quest games (except for X, which of course I've never played, dangit), but I've had a pretty hit-or-miss record with these spin-offs: I enjoyed Torneko Mystery Dungeon and its sequel (even though I was never very good at them), and Rocket Slime on the DS was a lot of fun, but I gave up on the Dragon Quest Monsters games pretty quickly (not really into Pokemon-type stuff), and I tried to like both Builders games but ended up getting bored both times. So this one is a big ol' “maybe” for me.
Please run smoothly. I love my Switch but 30fps and epic JRPG don’t mix well
Oozabella and the Dragling are adorable!
it might be weird but i often have the feeling, if you want to know a games quality look at the ui. In this case the UI looks pretty mediocre. I expect a 7/10 game max
@Andee I don't believe this is a spiritual successor, from the close to traditional dragon warrior monsters series. They were actually closer to the traditional turn based RPGs that the main line dragon quest games followed - but you had monster taming/battling, multiple worlds to travel and explore, tournaments and relatively in-depth monster breeding.
@Anti-Matter Yes but unlike Pokemon not all monsters will join you. Starting from Dragon Quest V, there will be a point in your quest where when after you defeat a monster they will not leave you but wanted to join you. Once that happen you could recruit them, train them, and tend to them like a normal party member. This idea then was brought over to create Dragon Quest Monsters which evolve into Dragon Quest Monsters Joker and this game.
