Everyone's favourite fishing feline is back! Big the Cat has been spotted in the Sonic Frontiers demo on the Gamescom showfloor, Eurogamer has reported.
Sharing the news on Twitter, @Bibouboul posted a photo of someone playing the demo with the large purple cat standing behind Sonic. The blue blur can also be seen holding Big's trusty fishing rod, which likely means we'll be getting some fishing minigames in Sonic Frontiers.
Interestingly, a datamine of Sonic Origins earlier in the year discovered some leftover files in for Frontiers that hinted at Big's inclusion in the game. This, along with the introduction of Koco, seems to confirm that the datamine was indeed accurate.
Big the Cat made his debut in 1998's Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, and he wasn't exactly popular. Big's chapter focused on him chasing his Chaos Emerald-eating frog and saving him through various fishing stages.
Game Informer went hands-on with the game back in June and came across Big the Cat in one of the game's Cyber Space portals — so it's likely a Sonic Adventure throwback just like the Green Hill Zone one we saw yesterday. Except here you'll be fishing instead of going fast. Or maybe you have to fish fast?

Big does have a bit of a fanbase nowadays, and the news seems to have garnered positive reactions online. We already know that Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Eggman are returning, so we wonder what other Sonic characters we'll see. Perhaps it's time for Bark the Polar Bear to make a proper comeback in a Sonic the Fighters-inspired Cyber Space stage?
Are you happy to see the grand return of Big the Cat? Let us know in the comments!

For such a big cat you’d think I would see him around more often.
GotY then
Elden Ring, XC3 and God of War Ragnarök don't stand a chance against Big the Cat
What about Froggy though?!
I still have horrible flashbacks of sonic adventure DX with that horrible fishing missions.
Their mistake is releasing this in November with God of War Ragnarok.
A cat voiced by Duke Nukem? Big is life. Always radiating that big cat energy.
Don't have a PS5 and I'm just going to wait for Ragnarok to come to PC, so I'm fine just getting this game instead.
@AstraeaV Not sure how much of an audience overlap there is there.
I didn’t really like the character back in the day. He was the reason I stopped playing Sonic Adventure for a little while, but I eventually came back to it. These days, I really don’t mind Big. He’s not my favorite but I don’t hate him.
Sonic Adventure 1 fans rejoice. It's been a long time coming but he finally made it.
@AstraeaV They can't delay it either though otherwise Sonic Frontiers get overshadow by Breath of the Wild 2.
This gives me hope that we'll see more active roles from characters other than Tails, Knuckles, and Amy; personally hoping to see Blaze return outside of a glorified cameo.
I despise this stupid Cat. I turned my Dreamcast off for a good while when I got to Big's Story back in the day. I despised him back then and I despise him now.
Hope the fishing missions aren’t as annoying as they are in SA1.
Just give me a $60 Big the Cat fishing simulator or a standalone Chao Garden game. I'm not even going to pretend I care about going fast any more.
I actually kind of love Big, despite his missions being the lowest point of Sonic Adventure.
People love what they think is rare. "Rare character", "rare game".
I don´t know why. I won´t never understand this weird behavior.
But speaking for me..Big is the worst character ever. Bad design, bad everything...gameplay..voice....everything. I almost stopped playing Sonic Adventures on my Dreamcast...it´s not fun.
@AstraeaV After decades of playing games I really hate those games like God of War that seem way better as a movie than playing. You get to think you can do anything but then you are put into a battle sequence that you can't save the game and you have to beat it a certain way and do it over and over and over until you are sick of every character just to get to the next trapped gameplay.
That is why BotW was such a breath of fresh air. Do whatever, whenever. Yes the shrines you couldn't save and some boss battles but all the regular stuff you can do whatever and pick and chose what you wanted to do
This feels like a Hugh Neutron in NASB situation: a character I guarantee wouldn't be in if it weren't for memes. A fishing minigame in Frontiers like in Adventure would be pretty cool though, not gonna lie.
@RubyCarbuncle Jesus that is some next level anger right there. I mean I don't blame you for doing it but still.
(flashback to SA1 of Big the Cat's Story.)
oh no... well, maybe they'll get it right this time? i wasn't fond of the minigame of getting froggy in Sonic Adventures
It is Japanese law that every game made within the country's borders has a fishing minigame.
Also, this game looks rad — even if it has Big.
@AstraeaV you do mean it's GoW Ragnaok's mistake to launch in Nov against Sonic, right?
@Fizza Lol nah not at all the character and his stupid voice just grates on my nerves but that's it. To me he no longer serves a purpose and just seems to be here for the sake of being here.
Yeah. Yaaaaay.
