Do you know who's having a really good year this year? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Tomorrow, the Year of the Turtle (sorry Tiger, we don't mean anything by it) continues with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, a collection of thirteen of Konami's TMNT titles for the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Genesis, and Arcade. Some of the best, basically.
Reviews dropped earlier today for this shell-full of games, and it looks like the keyword is, appropriately, "Cowabunga!" Digital Eclipse, the team behind The Disney Afternoon Collection, the Mega Man Legacy Collection, the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection and more, have once again knocked it out of the sewers and delivered an excellent package.
We certainly think so, as the Nintendo Life verdict awards this compilation a delicious 9/10:
"TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection is indisputably the best thing Konami has released in a long while, meeting all expectations and then some. Bar absent difficulty settings for the arcade games, it’s an anthology that finally gets it totally right."
High praise, right? Well, it's not just us! We've rounded up what some of the other critics have said about this collection of classics.

Just like us, Nintendo World Report gave The Cowabunga Collection a well-deserved 9/10:
"The emulation is great, the features are numerous, and the explanation and accessibility of old games is among the best I’ve seen from one of these packages. Some of these games might have shown their age overall, but you’ll likely never find a better playing version of any of them."
Destructoid gave the Turtles an 8/10, calling this "a great repackaging":
"The standout feature for me is the extras menu. Here you’ll find boxes and manuals, ads and catalogs, and even comic book covers and still screens from several TV shows. There’s behind-the-scenes-style guides/bibles the designers had to follow for characters, and a music player. It’s a comprehensive look at Turtles history, and I surprisingly found myself digging into it for an hour before actually playing any games."
Gaming Bible also gave The Cowabunga Collection an 8/10, praising the presentation, though noting that the game's post-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge release should be taken into account:
"..these are bare-bones indeed after that moreish delight, so buy knowing that you’re getting improved-feature-set versions of much older games, with save-anytime (one slot per game) functionality a real plus, but they are still much older games. Then again, if you’ve the truest Turtle power in your veins, you already know what this is all about and you pre-ordered it ages ago."
Lastly, our friends over at Pure Xbox also awarded this an 8/10, highlighting a pizza-topping load of extras:
"Honestly, there's so much extra content included here it's quite difficult to concentrate on the games themselves, but concentrate we must! The 13 titles on offer are as comprehensive a collection of the glory years of side-scrolling Turtles beat 'em ups as we could really have asked for."
Given how fantastic we thought Dotemu's Shredder's Revenge was, and how this collection shows Digital Eclipse's love and appreciation for the heroes in half shells, we're confident in saying that the Turtles are more than back to their best.
Will you be picking up TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection tomorrow? Let us know!

30 years in the making for me (since Christmas 1992 TMNT in time)!! And really happy to see this collection nearly on my Switch. 9 out of 10 sounds good to me but personally I would have given it a 10 just for TMNT in time alone Here's hoping for a NES and SNES Star Wars collection (NES SW and ESB, SNES SW, ESB and ROTJ) in the not too distant future and maybe a 3 x Rogue Squadron (2 X GC and 1 X N64) and Shadows of the Empire (N64) collection to follow?!!
I've been waiting decades to have the NES version of the Arcade game on my current playable system! Can't wait to revisit those early 90s memories.
I'm nearly tempted to take the day off tomorrow just so I can play Turtles in Time. That to me is still the best Turtles game even yet.
Good year to be a turtles fan.
The sweet sweet taste of nostalgia. This'll tide me over til shredders revenge.
Imagine reading Destructoid? Pffft. Can't wait to snag this tomorrow.
@Diogmites
Almost none of the games are terrible, especially when judged by the standards of the time. Not all of them hold up great by today’s standards, but the beat ‘em up titles were amongst the genre’s best at the time of release.
The non beat ‘em up games are hit and miss, but are at the very least above average. Even the first NES game is better than most licensed NES platformers, in spite of all of its issues.
Amazon shipped my copy out today. Can't wait to delve back into my childhood tomorrow!
@Diogmites Which games are terrible? I see mostly good to classic titles. Even the GB games are not too shabby.
I will get this game for nostalgia alone Seeing this collection also makes me very much longing for a simpsons arcade release on current consoles. I would love to play that game again with friends.
I know I’m greedy and that I can’t have it all. But still.
@Friendly It would be nice if they made a Simpsons Collection with that 8 levels 40 minute arcade game included. A Simpson collection with the NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear, GBC, PS1, GameCube, PS2, Xbox, GBA, and Wii games would be excellent.
@Diogmites There's is only one bad TMNT game made by Konami in the 90s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Missions for PC. Fortunately that garbage game wasn't included in this compilation. Everything else are pure gold.
I’d say shredders revenge is the new pinnacle but it is a recently released game going up against games if the early 90s that still are great to play. I’m looking forward to these.
Take note, Nintendo. All of the NSO games should include the instruction manuals.
@Diogmites
Hyperstone Heist, Manhattan Project and the 1989 arcade game are all basically the same as Turtles in Time. Wouldn’t call any of them bad. By 90’s beat ‘em up standards, they are way above average and hold up about as well as an early
90’s beat ‘em up can.
Genesis and NES Tournament Fighters are above average fighters by the standards of the console. Neither holds up well at all, but I wouldn’t call them bad either. They are competently made products of their time.
The same is true for the platforming games. They’re all at least above average compared to other platform games of the era. Compare Fall of the Foot Clan to just about any GameBoy platforming game and it comes off looking pretty good. None have aged all that well, but they’re still not bad, just products of their time.
I like turtles...
@Diogmites Wow. Couldn't disagree more.
@Diogmites
You could have just not replied, but you chose to be snarky. Classy.
@karatekid1612
I really want an N64 STAR WARS collection. The SNES games would be nice too. Disney needs to get on the ball, man!
@WhiteTrashGuy yep heard ya, take my money now as imo the games I mentioned are gems and in real need of remastering and made into a Star Wars collection!! Glad to see others sharing my passion! Hopefully word will get out and some devs might take this project on?? Fingers crossed eh as I appreciate there will be a few licensing issues to overcome!
Konami doesn't make games any more but they thankfully are still making quality retro packages it seems. I was very happy with their GBA Castlevania collection from earlier.
I hope we'll get to see "Konami ReBirth Collection" next...those WiiWare games have been lost for far too long.
@RushDawg And it's like maybe 10 sentences long. Kids these days....
@karatekid1612 @WhiteTrashGuy I love Star Wars, but I found the SNES games to be just average.
Already bought and paid for, just waiting for release. Still got my copies of the original nes, arcade, Manhattan project, time, and tournament fighters. Can't wait for this anymore.
I can understand that it may be worth it for those who grew up playing these games but after Shredders Revenge, the price is a bit high for another load of similar but slightly inferior beat em ups.
There are many beat em up compilations like Capcom Beat em up bundle and Megadrive collection that offer much more variety at a fraction of the price.
I'll probably wait for a sale.
I'll get it when I sale, at least 50% off. Most games I've played or have access elsewhere, and some aren't that good.
We've come a long way since the Virtual Console days where we begged to just get Turtles in Time.
Pre-ordered the day it was announced. Will be delivered to my door this morning!
I am so disappointed by this roll back netcode. Every game I play it is fine with just 2 players, but once a third player joins, it turns into a lag fest. Anyone got any suggestions? Would maxing out the frame delay help? Also, am I somehow missing it or is there no way to adjust the screen size in online mode? I can do it offline no prob, but not online in the 4 supported games.
