QuakeCon is taking place this weekend, and as part of this id Software has shared some announcements for its games.
At the very beginning of the day one live stream id Sofware's Marty Stratton, revealed Threewave Capture The Flag mod would be returning to the updated version of Quake, the console versions of the game.
You can update your version of the game on Nintendo Switch to play it right now. It comes with nine maps from the original mod, and supports up to eight players.
This mod was first released in 1996 by Zoid Kirsch and in the words of Bethesda, went on to make the Capture The Flag mode a household name in multiplayer game modes. You can learn more about this free update in the original blog post.
You can get the full rundown over on Bethesda's website. There are all so some bug fixes included for all platforms. Will you be trying out this fourth major update for Quake? Comment down below.

These games get amazing support. Probably best in class
What's the difference between normal CTF and Threewave CTF?
I have no idea what the Threewave part is a about.
Was gonna buy this but I’m reluctant as I have Doom and Doom 2 but the are annoying me every time I put the console into sleep and try to resume they just freeze doesn’t happen with any other games just those 2
Pre-ordered a physical copy of Quake for PS5 & Switch from Best Buy! It's amazing how much support this game has received! However, I hope the Switch version gets local wireless play support soon.
It's great how these cheap Quake and Doom ports are getting better post launch support then most AAA games and they're still fantastic games too
@Gs69 The Quake port is by Night Dive Studios, I don't think they had anything to do with those rushed Doom ports. They've done things like Turok, Powerslave and Doom 64 on the Switch, which are all really good. So don't worry about those annoying sleep issues with Quake.
@BulkSlash thanks for the info it’s just never mentioned anywhere and it’s so frustrating I have Doom 64 and you are right that never freezes I know it’s only a minor thing but it puts me off playing
Wish they’d release Quake 2 & 3 for consoles. It would be awesome to play the latter on my Switch. I have it on GOG, but it has some issues functioning at times on modern PC hardware.
Heh. I just bought quake last night
@TsukiDeity "ThreeWave" is just, like the "brand name" of this CTF mod. I'm not sure if it was the -first- CTF mod, but it was definitely the most popular. I used to play a heck of a lot of it back in the day. In addition to the flag, there are also four runes that grant mini-powers, and there's a grappling hook.
As far as NightDive's Quake, I think one of the mission packs also has CTF built in, but I've never tried it.
@progx They already released Q2 and 3 for consoles, back in the 90s (please don't hurt me) (I actually like N64 Q2 better than the PC version)
If the vanilla GoG release is giving you issues, there are tons of fan-made source ports out there you can try.
OH, actually, Q2 PC version did get ported to the 360, it's on a Q4 bonus disc.
Nice! Played this a ton back in the day. Capture the Flag at approximately 2 seconds per frame!
I'm really hoping for a Quake 2 port from Nightdive. Their work on Quake and Doom 64 is beautiful. Hopefully they include both PC and N64 versions of Quake 2, if they port it. (That's what they did with OG Quake, in fact.) From what I understand, based on John Linneman's recent video for Digital Foundry, Quake 2 is almost a different game from the PC version, with brand new levels. It's a Doom 64 situation. I'm stoked to try out both.
@Asaki you're right. They did put out Q2 and Q3A out on consoles of their time. I should've worded it "modern consoles."
@Gs69 you're reluctant to buy Quake?
@dluxxx ha lol not reluctant as in I’m not sure about the game I mean about the freezing issues with Doom I absolutely love Quake still play Quake 3 arena online on my trusty Dreamcast
@progx 360 port is supposed to be pretty good. But I'm sure Nightdive is working on a new one.
@Beaucine Haven't played the PSX one, but N64 Q2 is pretty good. There are a few familiar areas in it, but mostly it's new levels, yeah. I enjoyed the single player campaign more than the one on PC, and four-player split-screen Deathmatch is always a hoot.
It's not quite as drastic as DOOM 64 was, most of the graphics and stuff are still the same, and even the new textures match the theme of the original. HUD and menus are very different, but you get used to them. Skyboxes are replaced with parallax scrolling skies (like Q1 had). Weapons have a muzzle flash added in. I think they changed the color of the railgun?
Does this version of quake have game modes against bots, offline... Unreal Tournament style?
@Asaki
Sounds good! Quake 2 was the first FPS I played, along with Duke Nukem, back when I was a kid. But I didn't like them much at the time. I didn't fully come on board the 90s Doom-clone train until Doom was released on the Switch and I finally sat down to try it out. Since then, it's been quite the ride. So I think Quake 2 deserves another chance, considering how much I enjoyed all the Dooms and Quake 1.
DOOM I+II also have two new free add ons.
one was already released a couple of weeks ago(no one reported on that for some reason) and one just yesterday.
@Rykdrew I would have to double check, but I think they did add bots to it? That sounds familiar.
Of course, if you're on PC, you can add almost any mod you want to it.

Yep, it does have bots, and they're engine-side, so in theory, they should work with any mod. Dunno how they fare with maps that don't have waypoints, though.
@Beaucine I had played a fair amount of FPS in the mid-to-late 90s, and didn't really care much for PC Q2 when I tried it. I remember it being alright for a while, but much like Half-Life, it started to get a bit dull halfway through (although I did finish the entire game). I definitely need to give it a second chance...maybe I'll even play it with the CD soundtrack this time.
@Asaki Thank you!!
Just updated and cannot play online. getting some bethesda offline error.. Oh Well :/ Didn't think anyone would be playing this anyway.
@stuntz0rZ What do you mean you didn't think anyone would be playing this anyway? There's people playing it all the time. Don't forget this version of Quake has cross-play too. Plays a big role in keeping the online community active.
