Nintendo has released a new update for the Switch Online mobile application, designed for use with Android and iOS devices.
There's no mention of stability improvements or anything like that, but there have been some noticeable improvements to friend request features. Users can now send friend quests using a friend code, and copy a URL or use a QR to send a friend request.
Apart from this, some other "minor changes" have been added to the Switch Online app. For Apple users, this app can now only run on iOS devices that are updated to iOS 14.0 or above. Here are the full patch notes for Version 2.2.0, courtesy of Nintendo Everything:
– You can now send friend requests using your friend code. (Accepting a friend request requires a Nintendo Switch console.)
– You are now able to copy your friend code as a URL and/or save it as a QR code, which others can then use to send you friend requests.
– Other minor changes have also been implemented.
– System requirements have been updated to iOS 14.0
Nintendo's most recent update for the Switch was last month. The patch notes mentioned how there were some general system stability improvements, but there were also some changes behind the scenes. You can get the full rundown in our previous post:

No stability!?
THIS UPDATE SUCKS!!!
That's it, I'm immediately cancelling my Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Nintendo fails to deliver on stability improvements on its online service, and I've had enough!
It's finally happened! Nintendo has reached the peak of stability. Nothing else can now surpass it.
Except this is just an update of the mobile app so we'll have to wait until the next real Switch update to judge true stability.
Joking aside, I just checked the new feature out and it looks vaguely handy. I admit I had assumed you could already do something similar to this. The app could use a lot of work, but the recent updates are making it a bit less useless.
@Diogmites Nah, all the updates with stability were absolutely fantastic. But it seems like Nintendo just doesn't care about their fans. The fact that they're ditching one of the main reasons to get Nintendo Switch Online is disgusting.
I hope nintendo update the ios app so we can buy games on it, like in sony playstation and steam app.
"There's no mention of stability improvements"
SON OF A BI--
My horses are gone ):
It’s been said before yet bears repeating: Nintendo did awful with their online service. So many things that are commonplace on other platforms are missing. At least it’s only 20$/year. And it has some extra games thrown in, which is nice too
I don’t know how a company that is so creative with their games and consoles can be so far behind in what is considered commonplace today for other companies. Friend codes and scanning QR codes is ridiculous, and their online multiplayer function - and voice chat - isn’t the best. They want to be so different from Xbox and PlayStation, so much so that they are willing to be behind the curve with their online functionality simply because they didn’t think of it first (that’s how it comes across, anyway).
hopefully in the future you will be able to set your profile picture out of the ones you created on the Switch using the mobile app would be a lot more convenient
@BlackMayge Wii U didn't use friend codes it used usernames
my smartphone is ready....
Ah well, there goes another App from my iPod
so you telling me, nintendo thinks they can just update its services without adding stability? THIS WILL NOT STAND
the only reason for me to get NSO+ is really just the gameslibrary.
Especially with the expansion pack they could really have offered more incentive for online play. But thanks god I'm no Online MP person otherwise I'd be another raging voice in this comment section.
I mean, basically the only reason to get NSO is because they sorta force you doing it through some games like MM2 just not really making any sense without paying extra. Which would be fine if the actual service would also be OK, but paying for a bad Online experience is sorta ridiculous.
There are companies that are actually dedicated in delivering the best they can to make people not think about quitting their subscription. Nintendo chooses to make a service so bad, you're conctantly on the fence of quitting it but get dragged back in eventually by some cheap incentives. Its really not the best customer care.
@TheMelodiusRose because while being quite cheap, its still a paid service that is behind pretty much everything out there. I believe even Gamecenter on iOS makes more sense and doesn't cost anything.
I legit forgot the app existed.😄 Deleted it like after two weeks after it launched and have never looked back! But I also don't use my Switch online at all so it all works out in the end.
Long overdue features. Can't say the app is worth using outside of the game-specific services.
@TheMelodiusRose It’s definitely improved, and it’s worth the price by now, but it could be so much more. The app built in to the switch with the sore thumb red icon that runs slower than your grandma after eating a large dinner? The smash ultimate servers? A strange activity log system? Barebones friends list with no built in chat? Yes, it’s worth what I pay every year but it could be better.
How have they not shut this stupid thing down by now?
@BlackMayge This is exactly why I stick to playing games on Xbox and PlayStation unless there's a cool triple A Nintendo exclusive I wanna play.
Then I'll commit to that for a week of two, and it's back to proper voice chat and stable multiplayer games.
@TheMelodiusRose well if you are happy with your NSO I won't talk you out of it.
