Virtuos, alongside Panic Button Games, is one of the leading lights in the field of handling ports to the Nintendo Switch.
The company has been involved with titles such as Dark Souls: Remastered, L.A. Noire and BioShock: The Collection, and clearly has a solid understanding of what's required to get demanding multiformat titles running well on Nintendo's system.
In an interview with Japanese site Automaton Media – translated by Nintendo Everything – Virtuos staffers Andy Fong and Lukas Codr spoke a little about how the company handles its work on Switch. According to Fong, Virtuos' team in Shanghai is made up of 40 programmers, while its Chengdu branch has 20 programmers, all focused on Switch-based work.
Fong also explains how the company handles optimisation work for the Switch's docked and handheld modes:
GPU clock speeds are twice as high in TV mode. To make up for this, the resolution in handheld mode is typically lower. For example, if the resolution in TV mode is 1080p, and handheld mode is 66% of TV mode, then it should be 720p when handheld.
In our experiences thus far, it’s easy to pinpoint where performance is going smoothly or poorly in TV mode. However, in order to cover all our bases, the QA team is constantly playing the game in both modes – collecting and comparing performance data in both. Generally speaking, the game’s performance will decrease in TV mode when there are a lot of transparent particle effects or heavy post-processing effects. However, this is not always the case, so we need to test the entire game out. Our goal is to deliver equivalent visuals in both modes, outside of the resolution. Therefore, we do our absolute best to optimize both modes as much as possible.
Finally, Codr gives us reason to be excited about the future as he notes that the studio's developers are always "levelling up" as they work on new projects:
The majority of companies in the business of porting games to the Nintendo Switch have been progressively improving their techniques. At first, projects usually involve simple and safe optimizations. The reason is that developers are still in the midst of researching the new platform and learning its strengths and weaknesses. Our engineers and artists continue to level up from all of their experiences working on multiple projects. We’ve learned a lot of skills and have a lot of knowledge under our belt now, so I’d say we’re several levels higher than less experienced teams.

I've been especially impressed with their work on BioShock. If they think they can do something better than that now, I'm certainly eager to see what they're working on next!
Now lets hope for some more current ports instead of games from the 360/ps3 era that we seem to be getting.
I loved the Bioshock collection but they could have added gyro support.
Dark Souls is a great port of an amazing game.
Wish they'd get the greenlight to port the other Soul games.
I would like to see more Star Wars games on the Switch, recent and classic. Force Unleashed 1 & 2 would be a good game for them to port. And the rest of the Dark Souls game too would be nice.

@Mr-Fuggles777 Yes indeed - PS3 games are not sufficiently élite for the Switch! Just as in the Nintendo Life forums, Mr. Fuggles, there are no filthy casuals in Virtuos or Panic Button!
I would like GTA V, Borderlands 3, or other Dark Souls games on Switch, but for now, Virtuos, keep up the good work.
A little bit cheeky to be elevating themselves over other teams when all they've handled so far is ports from a previous generation of consoles... They haven't produced anything of the same sort of level as The Witcher 3, Doom 2016 or Alien: Isolation yet, though I look forward to seeing their future works if they're feeling this confident!
So does this mean more ps3/360 ports lol Nintendo's first party games are the only fresh new AAA games on the system and most of them are wii u ports, hopefully 2021 they step up their game
Call of duty black ops please and thank you.
Feral Interactive are my favourite studio for Switch ports. They've not just made good Switch ports of Grid Autosport and Alien Isolation, they've made the Switch version the best available.
@WaveWitch So you've been posting all these skeptical comments from a PC, right? I mean, you wouldn't be using a handheld device, 'cause that's not your thing, right?
I agree completely about using the rumble and gyro features. Riding a horse in Stardew Valley showed me just how great Wave Race or a new F-Zero with various degrees of surface roughness could be!
@WaveWitch everyone's circumstances are different, i work on the canals and i spend 80% of my time on my canal boat as it's easier for me to get to work.
I own a PS4 but my house is too far from the canal. So for me, portability is literally 80+% of the way i play video games.
And furthermore, even before i started working on the canal, my gaming preference had shifted away from being stuck in one place just to play my games. Portability has always been an important factor to me. More so now.
@WaveWitch
I have a good gaming laptop. Haven't used it for gaming in months. Even with the Steam sale, I have yet to buy anything.
Switch portable is so much more comfortable. Even sleep mode is a blast to pick up and play. Yes graphics aren't on par with pc, but I don't notice after a while.
Also, I've come to dislike staring at a screen far from from me. Switch gives that personal feel like when we use our smart phones.
Can anyone explain why the clockspeed is reduced in handheld? Isn't the dock just a lump of plastic with some usb cable routed through it?
Is it just a question of battery life?
Hoping for Sims 4, Crash Bandicoot 4 and the Tony Hawks remakes on Switch.
Weird that they boast like that because i’d consider them kinda mediocre at porting most of the time.
LA Noire - massive framerate dips in open world, draw distance is too short.
Dark Souls - audio is awful, everything sounds muffled.
Assassins Creed 3 Remastered - just a last gen port, nothing remastered about it. Idk about now, but it launched with awful audio, poor performance and pretty bad pop-in.
Xcom 2 - I guess playable is the best word for it?
Outer Worlds - well, we all know how that went lol
They didn’t even produce anything impressive of a port of current gen game like Saber with Witcher 3 or Panic Button with their Doom and Wolfenstein games.
Everything Virtuous ported was last-last gen and even then they mess it up most of the time. Only good things they ported that comes to mind are PS2 Final Fantasy games and Bioshock Collection, but even with that one they couldn’t be bothered to add gyro support to the game.
@Cwiiis They did the Switch ports to Starlink, Outer Worlds, and XCOM 2 as well.
@Thaliard So two more previous gen games and then a borderline-unplayable port of an actual current-gen game. That doesn't reflect well on them, in my humble opinion...
Overall they’ve done well, but I think they slipped abit with Outer Worlds. They certainly improved things in the patch, I’m so glad they didn’t give up on it as really enjoying it, I get the impression outer worlds was lower down the priorities than the 2k releases in terms of resources committed
If they could fix past games, like the menu buttons in Dark Souls Remastered. Just sayin...
@ian_beale Battery life and heat management.
@WaveWitch
Of course. We all have our preferences and that's completely cool!
@WaveWitch Nintendo has said the switch is about halfway through it's lifespan at the moment.
Wait, L.A Noire is on Switch? I completely missed that.
The new platform? With a lifetime of 5/6 years for a console it’s everything but new.
@WaveWitch it would be Nintendo's own fault not to release a pro version. Just maybe not in 2021 at this point.
@GilbertXI and it looks and runs great in portable mode. Played it all the way through
All these games should work on Switch, it's a powerful enough system to handle them. I'll be more impressed if this company could work with Nintendo and Capcom and get games like RE 2 remake up and running for Switch.
@WaveWitch
Some of us, or many of us, simple don't want to play games on PC. I got a decent PC myself for my work, but I hardly ever buy games for it even if I could get many titles for 1/10 of the price compared to eShop/Switch. But I simple just prefer to play games on my console.
@tourjeff yes having never played dark souls till the switch I thought it was amazing and was excited and expected 2 and 3 to come but no such luck yet 😣
@RasandeRose I tend to just use my pc for big first person shooters like battlefield and cod. I did buy the tomb raider games for it but would have preferred them on switch tbh.
@WaveWitch this FPS argument is so old. As long as it’s smooth it doesn’t matter.
@locky-mavo
No no the GameCube Stat Wars with online play would be nice.
Played all 3 Bioshock games on the Switch for the first time. Great series and great job on the ports!
Dark Souls is my most played Switch game by far, so I certainly hope they port Dark Souls 2.
Here, Virtuos, in case you want a "challenge".

I'm only sarcastic with Square-Enix, which has deemed the HD Remixes a challenge in the first place; I'm sure Virtuos would nail it.
Their Bioshock work is great. They know what they are doing.
Of course it is easy when you port over most PS3/360 games lol
Panic Button is still the best porting developers for the Switch, DOOM Eternal is enough proof of that.
Wait, his name is "Codr"? Pronounced like "coder"? Talk about irony...
@WaveWitch I’ve got a pretty powerful pc. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s smooth and stable
Still don’t see any major AAA games coming to the system from them or panic button to port. Would love to have a COD game or even GTA on the hybrid system. Guess it just isn’t feasible.
@Cwiiis Technically speaking, they're all last-gen games, but XCOM 2 and Starlink are PS4/XB1 games too. Yeah, they can't touch Saber Interactive or Panic Button in terms of "impossible ports", but Saber and Panic Button are exceptional. They shouldn't have even tried with Outer Worlds, but XCOM 2 looks and plays surprisingly well.
@Vsaxo27 i will echo this sentiment. I also own a fairly pricey gaming laptop but for anyone that thinks these things are on par with the switch for portable gaming are out of their minds. It is very bulky and extremely heavy/uncomfortable to use while chilling on the couch. I mostly use it when I go to a friend's house for LAN play or D&D, however, thanks to covid I haven't touched the thing in months. The switch's small form factor is unlike any other device i own and is great when someone else has the TV and I just want to game comfortably on my couch.
@WaveWitch I think you’re missing the point of the switch.......
@WaveWitch
Chances Nintendo releases a standard console to compete with Xbox/Playstation again is like very close to 0%
And you hardly need 4K to make good graphics and picture quality on a 65 inch TV, its hardly worth it if you're not playing on 100+ inch projector or if you're sitting as close to your TV as you do to your computer monitor... If they do release a Pro Switch, it would be good enough if they manage to get 720p games up to 1080p. They might even do something like Series S and support 1440p upscaled to 4k in docked mode.
@WaveWitch Nintendo has said that they want the Switch to last as long as possible and that it was just passed half way through the lifecycle earlier this year.
weird words coming from the very port firm that literally made outter worlds a disgusting mess on switch, barely scratching 24fps at times. It's audacious of them to even elevate themselves to this level of "confidence".
hope they stick to last gen ports, because that's what they're capable of doing properly on switch, they should leave current gen games alone.
@tourjeff unfortunately, bandai doesn't realise how much money they're losing by constantly releasing games nobody asked on switch. Like, jumpforce, who even asked for that on switch or thought it would sell more than other tales of games or even code vein, since they clearly don't want other dark souls on the switch.
There's just simply so much that developers can do, yet we're only getting a few handpicked current-gen games to be ported to the Switch. Despite all this, many last-gen games also still haven't been ported, which disappoints me.
@WaveWitch yeah, I didn't mean to imply that we would not see another iteration. It's just a matter of what they do and how they handle it. My guess is that they improve screen, battery life and have a slight better processor. Will they have a few exclusives? It would not surprise me either way. My guess is no. It did not seem like that was a big factor with the 3ds. You would end up limiting sales from the install base.
