As you can imagine, we're going a little bit wild for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at the moment. Look, the game has been brought forward by around two months, and the prospect of spending some lazy summer days saving the world in what we expect to be an extremely long RPG sounds like a total delight.
As well as a brand new trailer and a release date, Nintendo unveiled some more information about the game's battle system. We got a fair few glimpses at it in the trailer; seven characters on the screen at once, characters fusing together, Chain Attacks are back, as our teams and partners (like Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Blades).
Nintendo's press release had this much to say:
- Battle with up to seven characters: Like in previous Xenoblade Chronicles games, battles start by facing enemies directly in the overworld. Players can control Noah’s party of six, as well as additional characters they’ll meet during the adventure. Each character has their own role in battle, which allows for diverse strategies.
- Class change: Noah is a Swordfighter, specializing in close-range attacks, while Mio is a Zephyr, drawing enemy attention while evading their strikes. Thus, each character has their own class with their own strengths. Progressing in the adventure, players can change characters’ classes, creating a customized party.
- New Interlink system: Each of the tag-team pairs – Noah and Mio, Lanz and Sena, Eunie and Taion – can make use of the Interlink system if certain conditions are met. They will then combine into a giant form called Ouroboros. Each Ouroboros has its own powerful move set, and deciding when to transform can be the key to winning a battle.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 already had six characters out on the field, technically, but it looks like this time we'll have a bit more control over Noah and his party.
One thing that is brand new to the Xenoblade series, however, is Class change. While characters and Blades had specific roles in battle, they were set in stone for each. In Xenoblade Chronicles 3, you'll be able to change your character's class as you progress through the game.
You can see Noah and Mio as both a Swordfighter and Zephyr below. Not only do the characters change weapons and fighting styles, but they also change appearance!
Nintendo of Japan also published a blog yesterday going over these new additions, including more details art of the Ouroboros — the giant mech-like creatures that the characters transform into when they link together.
Part of the game's story summary suggests that this Ouroboros transformation will be central to Xenoblade Chronicles 3's plot, which is in line with most other Xeno games from Xenogears, Xenosaga, and especially Xenoblade Chronicles X.
"...Noah and Mio, who are in conflict on the battlefield, are attacked by a mysterious giant who suddenly appears. At the moment when Noah tries to help Mio, who is about to be attacked by a giant, the two bodies suddenly merge (Interlink) and transform into a huge figure "Ouroboros" .
The Ouroborosized Noah dismisses the mysterious giant and survives, but this has led the six to be in a position to be targeted by the two nations of Keves and Agnus.
Under the advice of a man named "Guernica Vandham ," Noah and his colleagues will work together toward the "land where the big sword stands out" in order to find the "real enemy ."
So, like Blades and the Monado, one of the game's key combat systems will be extremely important. In a clip from Nintendo of Japan, we can see Noah and Mio transforming into their Ouroboros mid-combat. Think Skells, but with some Xenoblade Chronicles 2 pairing thrown in.
Nintendo Everything has republished the clip from the website (Thanks, Nintendo Everything!), which you can watch here:
We already know a lot more about how Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will play than we did two days ago. Still, we we expect to hear even more about the intricacies of the battle system, along with a plethora of other details that the game will deliver.
What aspect of the battle system are you excited to try out? Or are you just excited at the prospect of more Xenoblade this summer? Let us know in the comments.'

The Ouroboros are so cool! I wonder if Xenoblade 3 is really Perfect Works part 5, just different due to not having the rights to remake Xenogears.
I hope we can change appearance without having to change class similar to XCX and XC:DE where there were extra slots for cosmetic armor
I'm really looking forward to trying out this Ouroboros battle system.
Another part of the battle system I'm curious about is how downed and revived party members will be implemented.
In past games, your ability to revive or perform chain attacks is dependent on a shared gauge that builds during battle based on your performance, but screens I've seen appear to show a dedicated chain attack cylindrical gauge without three portions.
Changing classes means that this game will be closer to traditional RPGs which is always great. Or at least Xenoblade Chronicles X!
I knew the voice actor for Vandham from XC 2 was in this but to see the character is named Vandham too is interesting.
Hm. But you could change class in XC2. For example, Morag is a Tank class, but the player can equip her with 3 Attack class Blades and she’ll automatically become an attacker herself. Furthermore, each blade had its own weapons - like a spear, a hammer etc. so… technically, nothing new here?
@Pho It's a thing with the series. Kind of like how Final Fantasy has Cid. Each game has one, and they're always different from one another.
“One thing that is brand new to the Xenoblade series, however, is Class change.“ The avatar from X could actually change class, but it always bugged me that no other characters could, so this seems like an imporovement.
the Xenoblade battle system is a huge reason why I don't think the series will appeal to a larger audience because of how complicated it is with each release
@KBuckley27 But is one of the reasons why folk love Xenoblade. So maybe the larger audience should just let us have it and play something else.
Will be interesting to see how this game handles character and party customization. Looks like a lot of the complexity budget there is being put on class changes. Based on what we've seen so far, it seems like we might not be getting full weapon and equipment customization, which makes me think the game will probably have something closer to XC2's accessory system.
Hopefully we'll have more flexibility in assigning available arts than in XC2 - I vastly preferred the level of customization XC1 offered on that front. And consumable pouch items need to go - that was such a garbage system.
I guess what I'm saying is a really hope the next trailer we get shows us some menus!
The new interlink system looks freaking amazing!! I'm REALLY looking forward to getting my hands on it! It looks like you can Daze enemies like in Xenoblade 1 AND Launch them like in Xenoblade 2!
@VoidofLight I'm cool with him returning, his voice is cool and so was the character in 2.
Looks like an improvement over XC2 for sure. I liked XC2 but it didn't grab me and will me to play through again. Hopefully this next one is the one that clicks for me.
If they decide to throw in characters with the some bodily proportions as Pyra/Mythra/Dhalia then I am done.
@DJDM I don't think we'll be going back to how 1 had customizable armor pieces, given that they showed Noah's collar tearing in one of the trailers due to a weapon. It could just be that was a scene from early in the game, but I don't know how they'd do New Game + with it.
Ouroboros reminds me of Astral Chain but I cannot say more because will be spoilers...
I enjoyed the blades on XC2.. they were like pokemons.. they had the best secondary quests on the game imo. hehe..
and I am the only one who thinks about UN FORASTERO once I hear ouroboros (even if I know uroboro is the virus of the 5th game)??
Just as long as it doesn't have something like those confusing Blade Combos (which I did master in the end but still) I'll be happy.
@rex_rex exactly, the rare blades were good not only they were very powerful but they also had their own quests and stories! the design of XC2 was so rich!
Thanks to Red Dwarf I always read Ouroboros as Our Rob or Ross
@BlackenedHalo indeed! I played XC2 before XCde, I prefered so much more the second... I finished the first, but I dunno, almost I did because I had to.. I was hyper attached to rex pyra and mythra, the combat, the soundtrack (even though the first soundtrack is amazing also).. Let's see the third game. day one for me.
@RubyCarbuncle You have a point.. my biggest issue about the gameplay is til the VERY end the game was still presenting new mechanincs.. I think I remebmer having almost 90 hours and still had a tutorial at the end.. hehehe. but amazing game!
@rex_rex Agreed. Just curious but who was your favourite Blade? mine was the Pikachu one (I've forgotten its name lmao)
Oh I am so ready for this game, July isn't soon enough!
@NightBeast
Well, technically technically I think the characters in 2 didn't have classes at all, but the Blades had. And you couldn't change the class of a blade.
You could also argue that, technically, you can change classes in many games like this, including Xenoblade 1, as you had a certain amount of influence on what they can do depending on which skills you upgrade and what equipment you give them.
Technically technically, they didn't have official classes at all though.
I love this, the only issue now is choosing between this or Live-A-Live since both are coming in July. Dammit Nintendo you ruin my plan.
@Kirgo well, in that case, I guess you’re right))
I enjoyed the blade collection aspect of XC2 so a shame to see that going away. I played through 1 after 2. If they announce DLC (why wouldn't they?) I may have to wait to buy it. The Torna DLC for 2 came out so late I had forgotten how to play, had no time to relearn the systems etc. that I never finished it.
Finch was her name, she was very forgetful and reminded me of Pikachu.
@KBuckley27 it looks complicated but when you play the tutorials it becomes fairly easy to understand. XC2 made it even more accessible, especially Thorna DLC
@KBuckley27
Xenoblade 2 shipped 2.1 million, which would make it the second best selling title in the "tales" series, the best selling "Star Ocean" game by over half a million, means it outsold Octopath on the Switch and is 500,000 behind that games total sales on all consoles, crushes Ni no Kuni, would be the second best selling Persona game the best selling Shin Megami Tensei game by almost a million ...
So maybe this is a hot take, but I'm going to go ahead and say one of the best selling JRPGs that doesn't have Dragon or Fantasy in it's name has already found a "larger audience".
In fact if you look at penetration (number of people with a switch that bought it as a % based on release date) that game sold 2m launched on a system with only 5 million units, and this game is going to launch on a system with 100 million units. Sure, some of that 2 million is over-time sales, but games sales are extremely front loaded.
I mean it's totally cool if you don't like the combat, the game systems, or the game itself ... not telling you to. But your perception of this as a niche title without widescale acceptance isn't accurate.
@Kynwal
The Golden Country is a stand along game with a completely new combat system that focused on switching between blades and drivers. The game systems were also completely overhauled, more closely resembling the first one. The only thing that carried over was the combo system.
So there was no "don't have time to learn" option as it didn't really build on the original. It was just a new game you got for free.
Please for the love of God let this game have a more serious tone than XC2!
Sounds fun. Always enjoyed the Xenoblade series' combat, perhaps my favorite combat system in any JRPG along with the press turn in SMT.
@Kynwal What's to relearn? It's a completely different game with a unique battle system. It was sold as DLC in the sense that it was downloadable and it was content, but it wasn't an expansion of Xenoblade 2's existing content. It was its own game entirely.
@Arkay Xenoblade Chonicles 3 will have a more serious tone, with this war stuff.
@Arkay
2 had loads of death, betrayal, and the consumption of human organs. Jin's backstory was really tragic as was Nia's. That wasn't serious enough for you?
@Lyricana I will first ask forgiveness for everyone who remembers all the game details from a game that released in 2018 since I didn't do my due diligence and research the internet before I posted. haha.
And my comment was "had no time to relearn the systems etc." A better way to say it would have been by the time that this DLC was released - (almost 1 year later). I had already moved past playing XC2 (I got it on release and still never manged to get 100% of the blades) after I put in over a hundred hours in to the original game. And didn't feel like devoting additional time to learn the new reworked systems to get the additional back story/history for a main character I didn't really care about, Jin/Lora.
All of it, just all of it. The class changing seems like it will incredibly fun to mess around with, the Ouroboros Interlink stuff looks freaking epic, and that battle music with the flute sounds amazing. So freaking excited for this game, and I'm incredibly happy they pushed the release date up to July.
@Kynwal The point I was trying to make is that it is much a new experience as buying something like Xenoblade 3. The way you said it then and now makes it sound like you still feel like it's tied down by the game it's a prequel to such that you can't just enjoy it as a standalone product. I just thought you might be under a misconception and denying yourself a really fun game you'd very much enjoy, if you like the other Xenoblade games.
@Lyricana
Just to further your point, it wasn't even DLC. It was a stand alone game with a physical release. You can buy a cartage that is JUST that game without XB2.
It gets called "DLC" because it was included as a bonus for the XB2 DLC pass, but if a DLC pass for Metal Gear Solid gave you Metal Gear Acid for free ... that doesn't make Acid DLC.
@Pho There's a Vandham in nigh about every Xeno game - including Xenogears and Xenosaga (I THINK he's missing from Xenosaga Episode III - that would be the one exception...).
It's just in Xenoblade 1 the localization team inexplicably changed his name to Vangarre. And in some titles, his name is Vanderkam (Xenogears and Xenosaga I & II).
@marandahir Huh, you don't say. I've played all the Xeno games, maybe I noticed then and just forgot about it.
@RubyCarbuncle hahaha the girl with eletricity? i remember her.. I must confess thar I forgot all the names.. to answer you, I had to google a little bit. LOL.. Roc was nice.. I used a lot a big black demon I can't find the name.. out of them, pyra and mythra and I LOVED when a main character became a blade. hehehe.
@RubyCarbuncle btw I love your gif! I finally just finished arceus (completed the pokedex) 99%! it's missing only 3 secondaries quests and the last ranking star. what an amazing game, my god!!!
@JR150 nope, I couldn't take the goofy-ness of it the first few hours of gameplay I had. The battle system was horribly explained and I could not care less about the characters. I tried multiple times to get into it but to no avail.
So yes, an overall more serious tone would be better.
I loved XC1 & XCX. I thought XC2 was good but I really didn't like the protaganists. The blades were a great idea but the implementation of them was mixed for me (though interesting overall). I cannot wait for XC3. Overall, I certainly love the series.
@rex_rex Haha thanks. Yeah loved Arceus, spent almost 400 hours wondering around the world catching Pokèmons and just taking it all in, I just wanted to make a GIF for using here and I went with Alpha Eevee. I really don't think we'll get another game quite like it but at the same time I would like to think we would.
@rex_rex You're thinking of Wulfric - he's the big black demon originally bonded to an Arachno boss in Chapter 3 but then after you get his core crystal he's not a part of the main story. He is one of the best Rare Blades given his 40 Skills (full level 5 for every skill node) and one of the most powerful attackers in the game. Also, Earth is just generally a rare element, and his Earth Mastery and Superstrength field skills are just really useful for exploration (tons of cliffs to climb, etc).
@Arkay
>"This game wasn't serious enough"
>"I didn't play past the first few hours"
That's the problem. You didn't play past the first few hours and are judging the entire game based on that alone. I recommend at least watching the cutscenes on Youtube because XC2 gets very dark--darker than XC1 at some points as the story goes on. You can't judge the whole story off of the opening alone.
As I said, Nia and Jin have really dark and troubled backgrounds but you wouldn't know that since you didn't play past a certain point. The game is plenty serious.
@JR150 as I said, I tried to get into it. I lost interest every time.
Thanks for the suggestion but I'll pass. I already looked up the rest of the story but I can't take it seriously with how ridiculous the characters look and how they act.
Sorry man but that's just my opinion and you are more than free to disagree.
All in all, XC1 is one of my fav games of all time and I am very optimistic for XC3.
The violin in the ost is annoying. Kinda would've preferred turn based as well. Otherwise cool.
God June and July will be busy for me with three hopes and xbc3 can't wait. I loved xbc 2 so seeing the combat looking similar helps sell me on the game.
