Spike Chunsoft. Inc has released new information regarding the two separate game modes that you can expect to sample in Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness when it launches on Switch later this year.
The first is called 'HELLO ABYSS', which essentially allows you to relive the anime while learning the basic systems and how to progress the game; think of it like a substantial tutorial for the other game mode. You'll control the anime's main protagonist Riko, who - alongside the human-like robot Reg - must navigate to the bottom of a colossal hole known as the Abyss.
The second mode is called 'DEEP IN ABYSS; it will allow you to create a completely original Cave Raider character and progress through an original story by series' author Akihito Tsukushi. You can complete missions and obtain relics to upgrade your character. This mode will be based purely on solo-exploration, so will require more planning and care than the aforementioned 'HELLO ABYSS' mode.
Spike Chunsoft. Inc has also provided information around the 'Curse of the Abyss' mechanic. Much like the original story, returning to the surface from a significant depth in the Abyss will affect your character in ways both physical and mental. You'll also need to consider the number of items in your possession, as all crafting items will count towards your weight limit.

Watching the anime for the first time at the moment, really enjoying it. Will definitely buy the game even if it's not perfect. Spike Chunsoft have enough points in the bank recently for me that I'm pretty willing to throw money their way.
@BenAV I have yet to watch it myself, even though I know what happens at the end of the first season. I won't spoil anything, though.
All I'll say is my first exposure to the anime was the very end of the first season.
Similarly, my first exposure to "Star Trek: Voyager" was the series finale, "Endgame, Part II." I guess I just have bad luck in that regard.
Brilliant Anime + Movie.. Has awesome potential for a game, fingers crossed this isn't trash.
Made in Abyss are my favourite series of all time and Spike Chunsoft has made some killer games lately, so I can't wait for this one.
I hope this games turns out to be good. Because I was not liking the fall animation in the trailer, like dang it took 20 years just to fall to the ground, and the delay looks awful,
other then that the game looks and shows amazing promise, and what I said isn’t anything that can’t be fixed.
Have never heard of this before and judging from the screenshots I can't tell if I will be picking this one up, definitely one to keep an eye on. I've been itching for JRPGs to play lately
"returning to the surface from a significant depth in the Abyss will affect your character in ways both physical and mental".
The same thing happens to anyone diving into this story.
@Pillowpants If you have never heard of made in abyss, don't be deceived by the cute graphics. The story is fantastic, but it's omnipresent horror is not for everyone.
@Rhaoulos How is the "fanservice"? Grimgar was completely ruined for me because of the ridiculous and unnecessary "fanservice"... Ugh hate the term too.
Still doesn't tell us a whole lot about the gameplay. What kind of game is it? It says there's "exploration", which is promising for me, but there's a whole lot about the format. Is it open world? Is it sandbox style where each layer is a different level? Is it a series of linear levels? Is it a roguelike (considering it's Spike Chunsoft and the nature of the anime, I think there's a very good chance of roguelike elements, but still not specified)? I can see a minimap in the screenshots with open-ish areas, but that doesn't narrow this down much. Also how does the Curse of the Abyss play out as a gameplay mechanic? This still isn't a lot to go on.
@Daniel36 There are like 4-5 jokes or moments in the entire series that don't feel appropriate since the characters are like 9 years olds but I don't think it's that bad. I definitely wouldn't call any of them fanservice either I guess.
I wonder how much more of Layer Three would be here.
@Daniel36 I don't remember any fanservice (I agree, the term is stupid) in the anime. The story is all about surving the horror of the abyss, so I doesn't really have any room for panties, which is good since the protagonist is a little girl.
Luckily it looks like the style of characters is a good game fit. Can't say the same for the anime which just looked cringe to me.
