Sega's Astro City Mini is getting a new version that features a vertically-oriented screen, it has been revealed.
The Astro City Mini V looks much like the original, but its screen is tilted 90 degrees to accommodate 'TATE' games. Taito is taking a similar route with its similar Egret II Mini, which is due out soon and has a screen that can be manually rotated 90 degrees depending on the game you're playing.
The Astro City Mini V will include the following titles from the likes of Toaplan, Raizing and (of course) Sega itself:
- Zaxxon
- Action Fighter
- Wrestle War
- Desert Breaker
- Raiden
- Batsugun
- Dogyuun
- V-V / Grind Stormer
- Same! Same! Same! / Fire Shark
- Outzone
- Tatsujin / Truxton
- Tatsujin / Truxton II
- Kingdom Grandprix
- Armed Police Batrider
- Battle Bakraid
- Strikers 1945
- Gunbird
- Moon Cresta
- Sengoku Ace
- Cosmo Police Galivan
- Sonic Wings
The Astro City Mini V launches in Summer 2022 and will cost 19,580 Yen ($172 USD / £129). The official site is here.
The previous model came with arcade titles such as Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, Shinobi and Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars.
Thanks to Lee Jackson for the tip!

I love the look and feel of the original Astro City Mini, but I wasn’t crazy about the games on it, unfortunately. This one looks like it has more fun games, but with almost half as many as the original. I think the original had 37 games, and this only has 22.
They should have done like with the Taito Egret II Mini, and have a flippable screen to make it more diverse.
Sit down, wallet. We need to have another chat.
Sold!
Looks like it has a decent set of shmups on it, with Raiden and some of the Toaplan titles on there.
Part of me is a little surprised (and a little disappointed) that they didn't take a page from the Egret II Mini and offer a rotating screen to make it an expanded version of the first release, rather than a separate one.
Being I believe purely shm’up based machine, I’m game.
Although I’d only use it up on a TV so wonder if this is really the right machine for me? Then again, I had hoped some of the titles in the original Astro City would see releases on other platforms and thats yet to happen.
I would like to say that if they are planning on making these a regular hardware release then I am doomed
It's a nice set of shmups and arcade games but sad for no MUSHA on there.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Why would MUSHA be on there, out of interest? These are only arcade games. And MUSHA used a standard monitor arrangement, not TATE?
Battle Barkaid
Armed Police Batrider
Batsugun
Kingdom GrandPrix
These shmups are worth the price of this thing alone!
I've got the LRG Astro City on my desk here, mostly a show piece I hate to say, it's nice but time isn't on its side (same with the neo geo mini next to it.) I'd like to own this, but we'll see. The Egret though the price on that one is disgusting so ...never.
As a man from Game Sack once said TATE MODE!!!!!!
love the original due to quartet, wonderboy, in particular, and lots of the others. no nostalgia for me with these shooters, and have 5 or 6 of the titles on it already.
still hoping they release some sort of boy/gadget with all their killer driving games on it. would pay silly money for sega rally games, outrun games, scud race, daytona games, etc, all on 1 machine!!
Bakraid and Batrider? Sold.
@Specter_of-the_OLED MUSHA is also currently available via the Switch Online Expansion Pass, so it's easy to get a hold of. A lot of these other gems on here are not so readily available.
I'm worried about how much this is gonna skin me, but I need this in my life.
"Armed Police Batrider"
OK, I'm sold!
To have
Battle Barkaid
Armed Police Batrider
Batsugun
On bundled together alone is insane......each one Id been happy to pick up a M2 remaster individually
Wow, this is an amazing lineup. Unlike the original Astro City Mini, there are far fewer weaker titles in the mix.
I wonder if SEGA plans on releasing a whole bunch of these so that we can all have our own desktop arcade full of candy cabs?
Now for shmups I’d want something bigger, like a bar-top style, in order to get any real use out it
Bring it to North America or it never happened. The costs of importing goods is ridiculous.
@FX102A if that's the case I'd make an arcade stick and use a Pi or other means.
I love the idea of this but like yourself I have no reason for it.
So is this why M2 hasn’t brought these to switch? So that I have to buy more collector junk?
A ton of Toaplan games, a bunch of 8ing games, a couple from Psikyo, and Raiden? I am 100% sold, I will preorder this right away.
@FX102A Not purely shmups, but almost. It has a Ikari Warriors-style action game and a wrestling game, so 20/22 games are shmups, which is great
I think it's good they made it a separate item rather than an expansion of the original one, which would have been the classic kick in the nuts to early adopters. Having said that, I'm not a fan of these games and if I had to buy it I'd wait for a certain future price drop, no rush here.
'Normally' Armed Police Batrider alone would make it worth BUT
I'm 100% sure that the game will also receive a stand alone(Hamster)- or collection release (of course with TATE mode) on switch at some point.
So, I will save the money (for now)
