Sonic Colors Ultimate had quite a rough launch when it arrived on the Nintendo Switch in September - with players reportedly encountering all sorts of issues. We investigated it ourselves at the time and were also able to replicate these issues by following certain steps.
Since then, the Switch version has received some patches, and now we're up to Version 1.0.6 (also referred to as 2.6 across multiple other platforms). Here are the full patch notes via the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account:
As you can see, Sega has even included a Switch-specific fix in this update, included alongside improved stability, save game updates, audio and music fixes, and various other bug fixes.
Have you downloaded this update yet for the Switch version of the game? Tell us down in the comments.

I do not have this version of the game but I do have the Wii and DS versions. If the new Sonic open world game is good I’ll go down that road with Sega but I’ve no hype, no sir
For how long it took for this patch to release, there are still a lot of issues that remain, but I'll probably end up buying the Switch version in the future now
It's already 30% off on amazon for anyone interested
I got the launch edition from GS for $20. Nice to see they have been patching it. (Haven’t played it yet.)
I don't care what other people think--Ultimate is my first time experiencing Colors, and I genuinely think it's quite good. The game crashed once, but otherwise I haven't encountered any substantial bugs. No graphical glitches. I know I don't have the originals as a frame of reference, but I do believe a lot of the criticism was blown out of proportion, which really sucks for the sales success of the game. And before anybody says "Sonic fanboys will defend anything," I enjoyed Mania but otherwise have always thought Sonic was pretty mediocre overall. I'm still dying to give Generations a try though after hearing all the praise and only ever playing through inferior 3DS version, so I hope it also comes to Switch someday.
I just booted up the game to see what was fixed. The audio mixing is much better than what it used to be, I could finally complete the Asteroid Coaster Rival Rush without the game crashing, and the enemy falling speed was fixed. However, the volume of sound effects and music still cannot be separately toggled, the new soundtrack cannot be turned off, and the cutscenes on the Options Satellite still cannot be viewed in fullscreen. I hope these will be addressed in a future patch. The game is significantly better than how it launched, but that does not excuse Sega from launching such a broken product to begin with.
EDIT: The intro to Starlight Carnival Act 3 is still messed up too.
The should'v just pushed the game back by a month, I wouldn't have minded.
Should have been delayed. Both this and GTA
@Snatcher but think of the sonic fans rioting over waiting for a new game (that literally came out on the wii)
@YusseiWarrior3000 Same here, But my god is it a **** when trying to 100% it.
I really don't understand developers and sh... how to ruin a game... I really wanted to buy this when announced, but I hate this way of manage games... Sonic is going to disappears from history...
@Mauzuri I don't want a company to fix a game. I want a company to publish a game perfectly working on day one... especially if is an old game... otherwise I'll don't buy it.
Bugs are not even the real problem, since they could be patched (and they are still working on it). The problem is that all the new content are pretty bad. Tails saving slow down the game instead of speed it up, since he hold Sonic a bit too long, the new power sometimes is useless since it brings you in places were you need wisps that you haven't unlocked yet, the race against Metal Sonic are useless and with an ugly hud, soundtrack is worse, as with the new lightning.
@Aurumonado will buy it when it cost 1,
this is the value of this remastered
@Arawn93 : And Pokémon. Even with the 3GB “update”, the game STILL isn’t finished!
A bit of a flawed port this one but I still oved it on the Switch. Not as much as my first time on the Wii or with the DS version, but still. My fav Sonic 3D game if not necessarily the best one.
I don't get it, the Wii version doesn't even need update and it plays better than these ports. Sega, like Rockstar, EA, Bethesda, and CD Projekt Red really knew how to screw up their good games.
@YusseiWarrior3000 YESSS, you understand! that was the soul reason LOL.
Probably my biggest disappointment game in 2021. I have it on PS4/PS5. It runs fluid and looks good. But the developers messed it up. Small graphical issues still aren't fixed. The soundtrack sucks, they could at least give the option to use the classic soundtrack, but no, instead there are these jazzy mixes which sound worse in every song.
The boss of Starlight stage is buggy. This should have been fixed by now. I regret selling my Wii version.
Oh good, now it should be possible to 100% my save file on the Switch version.
Playing v1.0.4, the game would consistently crash after finishing a Rival Rush race against Metal Sonic, before the game would save progress.
@YusseiWarrior3000 Sniff You get it So muuch! my pain, My suffering, you understand!
It's been nearly 3 months and it's still kind of a mess on Switch. The biggest thing I noticed besides it being nauseating when the framerate slips is the draw distance is mental! Texture filtering kicks in like 5 feet away from Sonic in some levels
@Arawn93
GTA is on a completly different Level than Sonic was haha
Not on another Star, not on another Galaxy, GTA has set the Level to a different Dimension
It surpassed even Sonic 06
I just bought the special edition with Keychain and gamerpics for $20 on ps4, that seems like a good price lol
I want to get this but am worried about the bugs. How is it since the patches?
Today’s game industry……
Buy it day one broken at full price.
Or
Wait 4 months get it half price fully patched.
@korosanbo I didn't have buggy issues with the game
What is the funniest thing is how some people have issues and some dont..don't.. the switch I have had one since launch day and never had a joy con drift issues
Great! I just brought it a couple of days ago in the eShop sale and glad I didn't start it yet now!
I actually don’t own the wii version I only ever had the ds version so does that count as me double dipping?
Also good thing I’m getting through my backlog!
Lol, I totally forgot about this mess XD
Okay, I booted up the game to check out what was fixed and what wasn't, and these were my personal findings:
Fixed:
Changed:
Not Fixed:
@korosanbo
"I don't complain about them fixing them. I just find it frustrating that they actually shipped the game in that state and didn't take some time to do some QA"
"QA"?
