[Update: Tue 12th Oct, 2021 15:15 BST]
Epic Games has now officially credited Among Us developer, Innersloth in an update to Fortnite's Impostors Mode. On their blog, the text refers to Impostors as "the game mode inspired by Among Us from Innersloth".
This is likely welcome news for Innersloth, although it's perhaps because of them that the updated text was added. When the news first broke, a number of Innersloth's individual team members expressed disappointment in the lack of credit.
Note: Adriel Wallick's tweet is a reference to a memeified comic by Nedroid, in which a character takes credit for someone else's creation.

Fortnite has never shied away from its pop culture references (and stealing things from other creators) so it's not hugely surprising that their new mode, Fortnite Impostors, does a little bit of both.
The mode is... well, it's very similar to Among Us: up to ten players are assigned either an Agent or Impostor role, with the Agents having to complete assignments to keep The Bridge running, and Impostors trying to win by sabotaging assignments, teleporting players, and manipulating people into thinking they're Agents, too. Impostors can even complete assignments to look less suspicious.
Of course, voice chat is disabled, but there's still text chat, which will let you communicate in emotes or by using the Quick Chat menu, and you can either play with just friends in Private or Friends Only, or join a full party in Public.
Oh, and if you figure out who the Impostors are? You just call an emergency meeting — er, "Force a Discussion", by either reporting a dead body or pressing the "Discussion" mode in the central room. You'll then need to eject the suspect from The Bridge, but if they're actually an Agent, you've just made the Impostors' job easier.
Agents can win by completing all of their assignments or voting out all of the Impostors, and Impostors can win by eliminating all of the agents.
If you've always wanted to play Among Us, but with more dance emotes, and less permission from the original developers, then now's the time: Fortnite Impostors is out today.
Stealing is bad, but what are your thoughts on Fortnite's less-than-original Impostors mode? Let us know in the comments.

Pure cancer, I hate seeing this in my feed but it is what it is 🙄🙄😏😏
Where is the true games that care about the gamers and not loot boxes and microtransactions?
Removed - unconstructive
Looks interesting! I’ll give it a go later today.
@huyi I too thought I'd hate Fn but after a quick go soon after getting my Switch in July 2020, realised I enjoyed it.
The 'loot boxes and microtransactions' you speak of are ONLY COMESTIC; It is NOT pay-to-win which is a common misconception about this Game.
I have bought a few skins but they have not made me any better or any worse at playing.
I've had a few games of this and I can confirm that it is very fun
@huyi 🇨🇵"poisson" = 🐟
@huyi to be fair I pay full price for a few bare bone Nintendo games no problem and drop most after a month or two. I spent 7.99 all together on fortnite and it’s been two and a half years. It all depends if you REALLY want a skin or not. No game play changes.
Edit:also saw your push square comment on their article of it. Must have a salt truck in your backyard buddy.
Removed - excessive emoticons
@huyi I’m so angry too. I hate fortnite. It should not exist. I only want games that I like in this world nothing else. Why am I in this article. Why am I commenting. I hate fortnite 😉
First off, iteration is one of the ways that videogames have developed, evolved. Countless games copied Mario and the platformer as we know it was born. Same goes for Street Fighter and many, many other examples.
All that being said... this is pretty shameless. This doesn't appear to bring much new to the table so it's a big mega-corp shamelessly stealing from a small indie studio. Gross.
kinda sus lol
It's free. It relies on pop culture to sell stuff. I get it. I don't like it. But I get it.
This looks interesting.
@huyi If you hate it so much, why are you reading an article of it? I mean, I understand if it's a joke but if you really do hate it, don't bother reading an article about it.
Real funny for you to assume you can "steal" a game idea that's been around for ages as well as body movements apparently (which funny enough, Epic stopped "stealing" a while ago anyway).
Need I remind you that Innersloth also made The Henry Stickmin Collection right? Heck, even Among Us "steals" too.
@PBandSmelly i know, i'm active on youtube all time 😁😁 sometimes on IG 😁😁😂
@Maaryotyme we are here because we hate this garbage and what it stands for! nothing else 😊😊
@ShadowWeaver421 because have to see this popular crap, it makes me angry and annoyed but i hate to put up with it, next gen kids and all that😤😤
Why make new games when you can just put everything in Fortnite? Minimize cost, maximize profit.
@mr_somewhere "All that being said... this is pretty shameless. This doesn't appear to bring much new to the table so it's a big mega-corp shamelessly stealing from a small indie studio. Gross."
Way to contradict yourself lmao. Especially since, as I said, Innersloth steals too.
@huyi Don't like this stuff? Then don't read. All you're doing is being a nuisance.
Oh, and Fortnite doesn't have lootboxes and the game's name is right in the freaking title.
@huyi right here bro playing we ❤ katamari on emulator
The main problem I have w Fortnite is it’s never ending consumption of attention. It’d be fine if it was cool for a year. But kids growing up now who only want to play this, for yeaaaars, that sucks. There are sooo many other experiences to have.
I know that Among Us wasn't the first of it's type, but this is clearly Fortnite stealing InnerSloth's homework and claiming it as it's own. I can only hope those kids playing this version wise up and see this as the inferior version. My only hope is that this flops and Epic goes on to catch whatever bandwagon is hot, leaving Among Us to itself.
This feels wrong… why they gotta do Among Us dirty like that? Leeching of their popularity like that feels like such a low blow, wow!
@Chibi_Manny @NatiaAdamo Lots of Among Us videos are still happening so Innersloth is fine. Besides, nothing was stolen here and the mode is only available for a short while anyway
At least push square wrote about it without taking more than enough unnecessary jabs at it. It’s a copy we get it. Been going on in gaming for decades. Literally since the beginning of gaming.
...isn't Among Us with shooting basically just TTT, or Unfortunate Spacemen?
Y'all, I don't care if you don't like Among Us, but this is a huge, multi-million-dollar company with many lawyers "borrowing" from an indie studio, with no repercussions. You should be concerned about that!
And yes, I know Among Us is based on Mafia and Werewolf mechanics, but take a look at the naming and the exact way of playing Fortnite's new mode — it's pretty blatant.
@KateGray
Sure, but there are games other than Among Us that are being more directly copied here.
@KateGray true about it being a pretty close copy but I recall a few reviews of dr Mario writing the game “reeks of plagiarism”. Among us has a great following that won’t jump ship for an imposter (lol) game. It’s limited time too so it will be gone in a week max.
@KateGray What repercussions are needed exactly? The game mode is temporary and Innersloth doesn't own the ideas for Among Us. Not our fault we don't agree with you.
And like I said, Among Us still gets a ton of youtube coverage and steals too so they're fine if this exists.
They could have put there own twist on it, I mean wouldn't it be cool if you used guns and junk? task is cool and all but they could have have other try and shoot each other at any point in the round if they think there the Imp, they would also add more tensness, Saying if you did kill somebody, and they were not the imposter, you got blood on your hands, and some won might have heard or seen you, Making people think your the Imposter, IDK, its a shooter and they could have borrowed as much as they wanted, but I would have liked if they added a twist.
And I did try a little bit of Fortnite last month after Being gone for a long time, its fun but that was never my problem, its the fanbase I hate and I rather not be around them.
@Entrr_username You mean those clickbate Fake, Staged videos? then yes thats a good sign.
@BLD USM is a good one.
@Snatcher
Wait there's no shooting in this mode? OK that's even dumber than I thought lol. And yeah USM and TTT are fun for pretty much exactly the scenario you laid out.
@huyi If you buy out all the skins then thats your issue, not epic's, wile I will agree that they do bribe you by putting cool crossovers and junk, but Every Live service game does this, I stopped playing bc I had to self control, and it sure isn't the games fault.
@Entrr_username I'm being a nuisance by exsisting? What do you live on? I don't want to go on about this cancer I play my own games offline in a long list of games that can be completed compared to this horrible abomination what else do you want me to say about this? At least the games i play have a ending and don't cost me a penny lol
@bluesdance which game u playing? Love 💞 katamari!
@BLD I don't think theres shooting in it, the article just says you do task and imps kill, So I could be wrong. Wile I never played USM, I have watched it, and all those games add something new to it, its never just the same vote out and Win thing, I mean does USM even have task?
Among us is going to get roles some time later so it wont be the same old vote out system for long.
So I think thats why people are calling it a rip off, If they have no shooting.
@KateGray I remember this kind of gameplay on a game called "Salem" before Among us. I think this is pretty much a genre, and maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture but I don't think that it's a good idea to appropriate on a whole genre, even if Among Us or any other game is a pioneer on it. Games constantly "borrow" stuff from others, even Nintendo ones. For example, before Pokémon GO there was Mobbles (GPS mechanics, capture creatures, fight, etc) and yet no one said anything.
@Entrr_username
Or, if you had actually paid attention to what I said I asked what this added, which, so far as I can tell is nothing. Doom Clones tended to iterate on Doom, same goes for the games that followed Street Fighter.
Epic being the exact opposite of their name as usual.
I mean, I didn’t EXPECT them to have original ideas…
Wait, you're telling me Fortnite is relying on someone else's idea? NO! Why, I never saw that coming!
@Thwomp_Stomper normally when it's a thoughtless copy (not a copy that adds a unique spin to the genere) it's the smaller guys copying the bigger ones... When a giant, such as fortnite, rides off the popularity of an indy studio the market for indy product can be seriously hinderd.
Fortnite copying somebody else's idea?
I'm shocked. Shocked!
...
...
Well, not that shocked...
@huyi Man its almost like they are trying to make money from a free game.
@Dilly-Mick very true. But among us blew up big in popularity. It won’t get dethroned at its own game. But I agree with some smaller indies getting the ole gut punch from a bigger fish. It just won’t take anything away from them with a limited mode really.
Forrnite copies MANY things, honestly...
Revive bus Cough Cough
I don't play Fortnite, but there's nothing wrong with copying genres from other games, this is how innovation goes, innovation is not just making new stuff, it's also allowing other people to use it, imagine if id Software patented the FPS genre after making Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, preventing anyone from making other FPS games.
Many people claim that Fortnite ripped of PUBG, but in the end, Fortnite was not only more successful, but it was better, and even though Fortnite is the copy, it looks more original than PUBG that is an asset flip while Fortnite has its own style of graphics and characters.
The people who are defending this hot garbage is mind blowing. This game is designed to make young people to spend as much money as possible. Some normal rational adult will not spend much money on this but kids/teens fall for this kind of schemes. People defending it "But you dont have to spend any money on it" Dont see the pattern on why they made so much money. If it were for adults only this game wouldn't never made so much money. Its the same strategy as the game Pokemon Go. Shame that people accept this as the normal thing nowdays. Now those people ( Epic) are arrogant now that they are a billion dollar company. This game came out a few years back and it went to go popular when kids flocked to it and they used that to their advance. Im against micro transactions, since its made like a forrmula: If you dont get it you are missing out. Its the idea how they implemented it.
But regarding the Among us idea. If it was other company that did this and took something from Fortnite, Epic would sue them to Oblivion, that is what i think that Kate is referring to.
ew (more text because this filter ***** itself if you don't write out a full sentence)
@DoubleDate I find it more mind blowing that apparently some children aren't supervised and educated properly. You talk about arrogance and shame and yet you get on a high horse just because we aren't part of the echo chamber.
That spending addiction problem can come with many things, microtransactions or not, and in the end it all resumes to regulation, parenting and education. Funny that I see many paid games not receive the same backslash regardless of also selling cosmetics or questionable DLC but these and other free to play games do and the argument always is " big corporation bad, microtransactions, they take advantage of kids!". Yes they do, just like many conpanies with many products that I assure you, are receiving a pass with you. As long as you allow it, companies will do that. I can guarantee you that Nintendo would if you allow them and they'll give a rat's butt about your economy.
@DoubleDate The only thing I'll say for the first paragraph is that the game is rated T for teens. Kids shouldn't even be on it.
As for your second paragraph, Epic has never done anything like that and has no reason too. Funny enough Innersloth did "steal" from Fortnite but Epic never sued them.
@Entrr_username "The only thing I'll say for the first paragraph is that the game is rated T for teens. Kids shouldn't even be on it."
Do you truly think Epic really cares when it brings them so much money that kids are?
And ultimately this is about not who's playing Fortnite but rather that one of the biggest video games company out there is not only making a game mode in the same genre(Werewolf/Mafia) than an indie studio but even copying wholesales the nuances that indie had introduced to stand out in the first place(assignements that need to be completed by non-impostors as a way to attain victory, impostors having to sneak their way around while avoiding suspicion to actually murder anybody especially to try to delay the call of an emergency meeting to discuss who might be impostors... this is a fair nuance from Werewolf's purely turn-based "just close your eyes everyone while the werewolves merely point fingers to decide who dies tonight and then you'll open your eyes to point your fingers at who you think is a werewolf).
This is a multi-billion(not millions, billions) dollars company that would have more than enough budget to hire actual designers to come up with original ideas and instead they copy wholesale even the tweaks introduced to a formula by a much smaller studio. And specifically only as said smaller studio had grown to visibility.
Like... they have the means to be more original than that.
@roy130390
Yeah sure, like you would be there 24/7 monitoring your kids. Since nowdays its very easy to spend money on certain games. For example V bucks that you can buy almost everywhere. If you are a family and you have kids and know the struggle of how you can keep your kids busy so that you can have some peace, will you prohibit them everything? Exactly. Resident Evil is made for a mature audience yet many people who were young played the games, so its not like every parent in the world will say nah no. It may be made for a certain age yet kids will be playing it whether you like it or not. Same as kids who were playing Mortal Kombat back in the 90s. You are acting like every parent is going to prohibit anything to their kids. Sure its a good idea to keep an eye but your kids are not going to tell you everything they do. If that was the case i think a lot of microtransaction games would be a failure.
I didnt attack anyone in here and seems like people cannot reply in a reasonable way without getting personal.
Those companies know what they are doing or they wouldn't apply such components.
The thing with a full game is, you buy the game and buy the DLC but you dont have many detailed cosmetic packs asking for pricess like €10. New packs ges released, meaning to make more money, that is the difference between them. Im against both though, i would rather have a complete game, then what is missing out instead of making it DLC put it in a sequel. But like micro transactions, the DLC component is the same idea.
And no need to be rude, just be kind. There are many ways nowdays that kids teens can buy credit to spend it in online stores. Many kids get some money to spend in the way they want.
But as i said, Epic is indeed being arrogant because they can copy but oh beware if other companies tries to copy some of any of their games, i can tell you they will deff sue.
@DoubleDate why would you need to supervise well educated kids 24/7? Yeah, exactly.
I made it as personal as you. You talked about it being a shame that people support or allow this and I told you why in my opinion, I feel like you and other people that just shout against it get on a high horse. Still, no ill will or intention of insult intended so I'll keep it in mind in future replies.
There are many ways in which kids can get credits and still most of them depend on the parents and even if not, a good education about it makes the difference. If they are spending THEIR money, then I don't see a problem although I would still recommend to talk about it or at least be somewhat informed.
Epic as a company is another matter to me, but it's pretty impossible to monopolize an entire genre, which isn't even invented by the Among Us creators.
@Ludovsky It's limited time. The only counterargument needed for comments like yours
@roy130390
I understand your point, kids needs indeed more supervised options but at this day and age we know that kids will defnitely keep doing their own things. We are not talking about toddlers, we are talking about kids from the year 9-13 and then you get the teenage years 15-17. Those kids will play anything that is popular. Fortnite grew today as it is due to all the kids playing it, once as COD was. I dont know if you played online during the time when COD was at its primetime, lots of kids playing it, a game that is suppossed to be played by older players. So you may have well supervised kids, at the end of the day parents will not be 24/monitoring what their kids do. One example, you have a 14 year old daughter/son will you watching 24/7 their actions? Or would you rather that you have your kids safely home playing video games instead going outside doing may Heaven know what? I'd rather have my kids playing games then instead maybe doing things that i as parent dont know what they are doing, hence why parents let their kids play video games, no matter if its intended for older audience or not. Nowdays no one care about it if a game is for older audience unless you are a 5 year old or a 7 year old playing Silent Hill, what im sure many parents will not allow that. For most of the parents Fortnite seems harmless, the colorful game, how the characters looks, parents wouldn't be bothered to even deny their kids playing the game. Its well designed and well crafted to get so much money out of it.
You say if they are spending their money that you dont see the problem, that is my whole point.
Im not referring to the whole gaming world, im referring that for example if a small company would copy any use from their games (Epic) They will not hesistate to sue because they see its as their own and make a lot of money but when they copy something that is popular from another game, Among Us for example then for them its "Okay" Hence why i think that Kate posted this.
As for the microtransactions, companies now very well that is target to certain audiences. There is even a documentairy detailed how developers do this so that players will be motivated to buy things. As i commented above, most adult will not spend much money on microtransactions.
@DoubleDate I don't want to interfere with this argument but you do realize that it's the parents' decision of allowing their kids to play games and watch movies that are targeted towards a more mature and older audience, correct? When I was younger, I watched all the slasher films and I played Mortal Kombat and all that stuff because my parents allowed me to. So in the end, it's really the parents' decision to allow their kids to do things like that. Even with micro-transactions for games, if it is their own money, they can do whatever they want with it as long as they are allowed to. And if you are that worried about your child using micro-transactions, you can easily prevent them from buying stuff in the settings of the device they are using to play it. Now imma get out of this before I get dragged into it.
@ShadowWeaver421
Yes its indeed to the parents permisson, but the point is that a lot of parent are not giving a lot of care what childrens play since kids nowdays have Ipads, Phones, Switch. When i was a kid i played all the Resident Evil remakes even without my parents knowing all the games that i played. Parents buy a game system and kids play whatever they want to play since now we are in the digitally gaming era. When games were not digital, you needed to ask your parents to buy you a game, nowdays you just login and buy online credits, for example with Nintendo cards you can buy whatever you want on the gaming system.
Im not saying that its up to their parent to look what their kids do, but as i commented above which kids hasnt played Fortnite. There was even cases where parents needed to pay lots of money because their kids bought stuff without even them knowing, that is what i mean that not every parent is watching their kids 24/7
@DoubleDate hopefully this doesn’t come out as a rude response, but if somebody has a kid that they just throw on a device and don’t even bat an eye at them than maybe they shouldn’t be parents? They don’t even check up on what their kid is doing and then complain when they have to talk to them about abusing the credit card after they spend hundreds in game. Like before hopefully this doesn’t come out as rude.
I don't see the issue with Fortnite copying Among Us. It's not like people will stop playing Among Us wholesale just because Fortnite Impostors mode exists. If anything, it might turn more people on to the Mafia/Werewolf concept all within a game they already play. And if they're curious, they could always check out Among Us to see where they cribbed the idea.
If Among Us is that greatly affected by this, then maybe it's time for Among Us to evolve. PUBG had to improve because of Fortnite. And Apex Legends jumped in because they did something the other two didn't. It's an all-around win.
Hell, this might force Innersloth to drop the quickchat wheel and bring back the chat functionality for all players that made the game a phenomenon in the first place. If we get a better Among Us out of this whole deal, then that's splendid.
Every one of these articles completely omits and doesn't even mention "The Spy Within" community mode which did the exact same thing and was introduced to Fortnite almost an entire year ago.
@DoubleDate I understand that more clearly now. Parents shouldn't have to walk away for 5 seconds only to come back to their kid buying all these add-ons and stuff. They shouldn't have to monitor them 24/7. If they taught their kids not to spend money like that, they should be alright. But I do know that not all kids were taught that way and do have to be monitored a bit more. But if the parent is paying attention to purchases and what their child is doing, I see no reason why they would have to be monitored all the time. All it takes is a little check-in on their child to make sure they are not doing anything they shouldn't be doing unless they allow it
@KateGray And Epic has the nerve to say that Apple is treating them unfairly. It's obvious how profits are the only thing they care about.
Since split screen, me and my ol lady have won over 80+ games not including all the individual solos we’ve won.. only people who complain are people who have never/and/or will never win.. I can’t built worth a sh** I just keep my walls up and grenades out.. hardly ever disappoints..
Among Us was a blast until cheaters jumped in.. hopefully FN has a greater take on the idea.. look forward to trying it this wknd
This is not surprising, Fortnite is built on clout chasing. Remember that it was originally a co op horde game that became a BR after PUBG took off.
IDK, Among Us but 3D and with pop culture skins sounds good to me.
Check out the corporate defenders in here. Always sad seeing people who have been trained to defend needlessly huge businesses that will never care about them.
Giant corporations stealing ideas from indie developers will always be gross.
@KateGray What's also funny is that PuffballsUnited didn't seem to be bothered by Fortnite "stealing" from Among Us. Only that he wished they were more creative in their version.
@Zebetite exactly. It's not about "Among Us will still have players, they'll be fine", it's that this sets a dangerous precedent that massive companies can steal from small studios, and the indies can't do much about it.
I'm incredibly surprised that so many people here don't think that's gross. Imagine yourself in that position — your hard work being taken by someone else! It doesn't matter if you STILL get credit for your work — they're making money off it, and they'll keep doing it to other people, too.
How long till Fortnite makes a Splatoon-like?
Remember when all first-person shooters were "DOOM Clones"? And when the Battle Royale genre was made of "PUBG Clones"? How about the one time action-adventure games were "Zelda Clones" then? Or the platformer genre, yeah, the "Mario Clone". Good times.
Well done Innersloth lawyers, if this was the other way round then the Fortnite lawyers would have took every last penny they had!
Great, and it only took until people stopped caring.
@WoomyNNYes They've already got paint guns in the game...
But even if they do make a splatoon "inspired" gamemode i will play it because I like playing fortnite
I think it was a dirt cheap move on their part to have even copied Among Us. Don't forget, they never credited them till they said something about it, and they wouldn't have if they hadn't.
According to the back and forth tweets from both Fortnite and Among Us teams, they are clearly working on a collaboration together.
I'm honestly excited to see what it is!
Amongus copied mafia and town of salem tho?
Wow, epic, Real nice, well they said it, and thats all they had to do in the first place, how long has it been?
idk, but that was really scummy.
@Ultrasmiles from what I heard Among Us did introduce some new stuff to the genre
Well? They said it, but did they pay money to compensate for the number of players that they probably stole?
So if you’re meme-able you get to say you’re the first person to create a concept? Now that’s sus, NL.
I swear it’s either Fortnite bashing to appease your older demographic, or pushing pirated game updates as news.
The “journalism” here is the only thing meme-able.
@AlexSora89 it’s on trend to hate Fortnite and that’s what NL does. Which is why they keep pushing articles about the pirated game community, and acting like they are still some small indie company sticking it to the big guys. News flash. You’re the big guys NL. Act like it.
The bare minimum of bare minimums, as can be expected from scum.
Huh? People still play this?
I have never played Fortnite , because I am dreadfully awful at FPS games...I am still tempted to give it a try....lol
