We're just over halfway through September and that means we're getting closer to the Switch OLED's release on October 8th.
We've seen trailers from Nintendo, read "hands-on" first impressions from the media about it and now we've got a first look at the device in the wild. As highlighted by our friends at VGC, the new model priced at $349.99 / £309.99 has just gone on display at various retailers around Japan - including Nintendo's very own Tokyo store.
Limited Run's Japanese Business Manager, Alex Aniel, was able to grab some photos of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe running on the system - noting how "vibrant" the new 7.0 inch OLED screen was. Obviously the smaller bezel is an improvement, too.
And here are some other shots - the first is of the system behind a glass case (courtesy of @nattu_ninmosa59), and the second batch of photos are also from Nintendo's Tokyo store (thanks, @bunnagashi) - showcasing Splatoon 2 and Metroid Dread on the new display.

The new dock that comes with the OLED model includes a LAN port and will be able to receive updates. In fact, Nintendo's already rolled out an update for it in Version 13.0.0 of the system firmware. Earlier this week, the company also announced it would reduce the price of the base model system in select regions around the world. Notably, this does not include the US.
Switch OLED pre-orders will open next week in Japan on 24th September. As for the US and UK, you can check out our handy Nintendo Life pre-order guide. Will you be picking up the new Switch OLED model when it launches next month? Tell us down in the comments.

Aww, it looks gorgeous! Apparently, they will have to be sold via lottery in Japan. Will make for some interesting hardware charts when it releases.
And still no news about those white joy-cons available separately or not T_T
@GrailUK : An Xbox console might finally outsell Nintendo hardware!
@GrailUK whenever Nintendo releases new hardware in Japan, it’s gone quickly. Also, the older ones will keep selling through too.
@Silly_G as an Xbox fan, can I have what you’re smoking?
@progx : I thought lotteries were usually reserved for extremely limited items as opposed to something intended for wide retail release, hence my initial comment.
Looks beautiful. If I was a handheld player, this would have been a must have
@Silly_G It's the end times, I tell thee...
Look at how dark that inky black screen is!
Compare that to the current LCD with a screen almost as grey as the system itself.
LCD Switch

OLED Switch
Having recently upgraded to an OLED TV, I realized I want everything to be OLED now. It’s hard to believe Switch is actually releasing one. But here we are. That kickstand is nice too.
@Silly_G
They do lotteries for mass selling items since demand far exceeds supply. The original Switch was sold via a lottery system in Japan for well over a year after release.
That screen does look good. As a Switch Lite user, I'm hopeful Ninty releases a Lite model as well
Oh geez. I'm starting to want this thing...
@Jimmy_G_Buckets I agree!
Gah, I want one again
Ordered mine directly from Nintendo UK so roll on 8th October.
Or more likely 8th November !
@JaxonH same here.
Sorta wish Nintendo sold the Switch OLED model tablet by itself (no JoyCons, dock, AC charger, HDMI cable, wristwraps) for ~$150 - I'd probably upgrade.
Really excited for it. I play around 90% handheld so a bigger screen along the OLED screen is very welcome.
The only thing I'm concerned about is the size of that thing.
It's supposed to be around the same size as the regular switch and I have a ton of accessory for it. I hope I can still use it with the new model.
@HedgehogEngine
I suspect it won't be glass, as Nintendo tends to prefer plastic as it won't shatter when dropped.
Which is OK by me, since I can just apply tempered glass and retain the benefits of a plastic screen while also having the benefits of glass.
I could be wrong though. The screen does look reflective like glass. So maybe it is. Either way. If it is, cool. If it isn't, a tempered glass screen protector will do the trick.
It's a nice screen but I'll stick to my Switch lite with skull and co grips for seriously comfy gaming.
Yay a better screen to play a 7 year old Mario Kart made for Wii U hardware. Nintendo is robbing you friends, and they don't even have to make nice things...
@15roundTKO
a 7 year old Mario Kart made for Wii U hardware
That's... an intentionally obtuse take.
For one, that "7 year old Mario Kart made for Wii U" is a stone cold classic that tens of millions of people fiercely enjoy, regardless of whatever petty insults you may throw at it.
For two, Mario Kart isn't the only game the Switch OLED can play. In fact, you may be surprised to hear this, but it can actually play every single game in the Nintendo Switch library! I know, crazy right! And not only that, it can play all future upcoming games as well.
So no, not just "a better screen for Mario Kart". It's a "MUCH better screen for Mario Kart and the 500 other Switch games on my shelf and microSD card".
It looks really beautiful. I am so happy I pre-ordered it.
Hate the fact it still uses v2 hardware and charges more.
In Europe you guys are paying $75 more for this than in America. It's $350 here and $425 in Europe when converted. YIKES!
Isn't that screen a bit too reflective. Shouldn't we have learned by now that reflective screens are not actually good.
@impurekind
My LG C1 OLED TV is more reflective also, but in actual use it's fine. That Switch is in a department store with massive lights, and cameras pick up reflections easily. Wouldn't be worried about it.
Steam Deck 512 GB model (the one I have preordered) has an anti-glare screen, which is cool, but at the same time it dulls the image and makes it look more flat and less vibrant. Once a tempered glass screen protector is thrown on it'll be the same as our current Switches with tempered glass.
@SwitchForce
Then just don't buy it.
Might be surprised to hear this, but power isn't the only aspect of technology people are willing to pay more for. So while it may not be for you, it shouldn't be "surprising" that there are other luxuries beyond just power that are upcharged for.
@HedgehogEngine
You might be right. We'll see. Either way I'm not worried about it.
@Deviant-Dork you should see what people in the UK pay for mac computers.
So did anyone interview it or at least get its autograph?
Wow, getting that screen positioned so that half of it isn't obscured by glare with any lights around is going to be a b*tch.
Cya
Raziel-chan
It's the same colours as the playstation 5.
@Yodalovesu meh, I'm not bothered, it's not important enough to upgrade tbh
Looks beautiful! Will get one next year!
Maybe I'd be tempted if the actual area of display was the whole of that screen
@huyi That's exactly why I'm bothered that I want it haha
I need to see it in person. It's borderline impossible to judge how a screen looks over another screen.
I'm interested and can afford it for the time being. But I need to see if the screen really is that much better.
For anyone who wants a better look
https://youtu.be/kBse3Qbfx0g
Can't wait to get mine!
Why do I feel like somebody is gonna steal this Switch Pro just to test n stuff-
Being mainly a television player, I just don't see the need to get one. But it's still slightly tempting for the times I do play handheld.
I'll hold off for now and see if they'll release a cool limited edition version. Yoshi version please! I loved my Yoshi 3DS and I'll love a Yoshi themed Switch too.
Is it too much to ask for a way to buy the tablet separately? They sell just about everything else on its on: dock, cords, (soon to drift) joy con, etc... That's the only way they'll see any of my $$ on this mess.
I personally have no interest in paying $50 premium for a half effort product otherwise tbh.
@Deviant-Dork
That's also because UK prices include 20% tax and US prices don't.
Looks lovely but can't justify the upgrade. Now if with that shiny new oled screen you add hdr patches for existing titles and new 1st party releases, I'd maybe be tempted

@electrolite77
Duly noted. I don’t frequent the main site article comment sections very often anymore because they’re consistently overrun by immature children, consoles warriors and trolls. So I don’t really keep tabs on who falls into those categories.
@Gwynbleidd
A tempered glass screen protector should do the trick. I’ve never gone out of my way for antiglare glass, because standard tempered glass isn’t overly reflective. But I do believe they sell them if you’re interested. Can’t find any that are tempered glass but they make them for the current model so I’m sure they’ll release some once OLED is out. Here’s anti glare I found for OLED though.

Personally, I’m going with these. Comes 4 in a pack with an alignment tool so you don’t have to bother with tape hinges.

True blacks. Brigjt screen. Do I buy a €350 7 inch OLED screen OR 55 inch OLED for €750 😭😭😭😭 it would make.my existing Switch(es) that much better on the TV 300 days of the year...but those train rides & 2 flights a year would be lacking tho...gah!... I am in a pickle!!
Given I mostly game docked this isn't really worth it for me.
@HedgehogEngine OLED displays are only as sharp as their native resolution, just the same as IPS or VA panels. Claiming otherwise is sadly reminiscent of Sony fanboys and their "magical ssd". Blooming is caused by backlighting, but full local array dimming mitigates this, and also benefits from complete freedom from image retention. Bloom has nothing to do with resolution. Further, frame rates below 30fps will look noticeably worse on an oled display than they do on an IPS or VA panel. Stop peddling nonsense.
Hopefully I'll be able to get one in 2022.
I didn't really want one but I usea switch lite, and well, this is perfect, Kinda like a switch lite 2.0? idk, but I might need to get this.
I don't play in handheld mode much, nor do I play online very often, so the Switch OLED would essentially be a waste of money for me. Just give me Metroid Dread and I'm good!
I need to replace my switch because it has cracked plastic on its back and around the charging port and the joycon runners creak and bend making it feel so flimsy and cheap. This is from very light, occasional casual use. Is the oled any better in terms of build quality? More sturdy materials? For me the nicest part of this is a functional kickstand.
Oh wow it look cool I am very excited for this ima get it since I already preorder the play date console. 🤩
@westman98 100%
@Moistnado I’ve used mine for 100’s of hours over 4 years, ru sure it’s ‘light and casual’?
I’d complain to them if it’s broken.
@Pikman yes I think the damage is caused by placing it into the dock. Cracks around the charging port. I have had it for four years though. Only really used if for botw in the first year and very occasional Mario kart when people visit and are in the mood. Very light use. I find I use my 3ds and GBA more these days. My GBA and 3DS have lasted double or quadruple the time my switch has and they have zero damage and 1000s more gameplay hours on them.
@Moistnado damn, that’s pretty unfortunate. Mine looks like new 🙃
@Pikman maybe mine was made in a different factory? I don't know. my GBA is in so much better condition, I play it more often and it is way older than most people reading this. Everyone I know with a switch, has had drift or some kind of damage. You are very lucky, mine feels like it it will break from holding it, gives off a ton of heat and makes whining noises out of the fan. It also has a fair bit of slowdown, but it had that the day it launched.
@HedgehogEngine It's a fact that the faster response time of oled panels will exacerbate problems with low frame-rates and inconsistent frame rates, something that numerous high-profile Switch releases have suffered from. Burn-in is still a problem for oled displays, this is why there are efforts and instructions to mitigate it. Some would rather not deal with the risk associated with it. Oled has matured as far as it will go, soon to be replaced by micro-led.
Using r-tings as an absolute authority really isn't the way to go, and while I haven't read their review of my tv, I'd be surprised if they have many bad things to say about the 65" Samsung QN95A, considering how well it has been reviewed and compared to oled just about everywhere, so I won't need to post a link to "get you started".
@Deviant-Dork You conveniently forgetting to mention that tax is included in the EU price. It probably works out at slightly more, bit still, not as much as you're making out.
Doubters of the Switch OLED will not be able to bury their head in the sand when they see one of these displays. Carp all you want about the same chipset and joycon drift, but just seeing one of those displays playing MK in all it's 60 fps glory will put systems in hands.
grabbed this since i pretty much play 100% of the time in handheld only using docked for watching videos on youtube
@Deerock69 OLED doesn't give you GPU 60fps. Need to do more homework here. It still uses v2 hardware with only memory upgrade storage. Slapping a OLED doesn't improve fps. Dead Cells is suppose to do 60fps on v2 Switch so where are your OLED 60fps coming from?
@JaxonH Which oled tv? I have a lg cx and it’s absolutely ruined tv for me. Watching on anything else looks like trash. I love it! To me, is as big a step as when HD was first introduced.
I’m SO excited for this oled switch, and those white joycons look so clean.
@Jamessmooth
The LG C1 (2021 version of the CX).
I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say it’s as big a jump as from SD to HD, because I don’t think anything can match the improvement there, but I will say it’s made as much of an improvement visually as the upgrade from HD to Ultra HD.
I was watching Outer Banks which has Dolby Atmos (and I think Vision as well? Can’t remember) but anyways, it panned a shot with the sky in the background and it felt so real. Like I was standing there in the woods looking out at the sunset. I was astonished.
I was going to buy the Switch OLED either way, just for all the other improvements (I love tabletop and that kickstand is a big improvement) but now, having my OLED TV, I feel genuinely excited for the screen.
Are they selling the OLED portion separately? The joy cons and dock are ugly, but I would be tempted if I could just buy the central unit with the screen.
@Old-Red no I'm not. But thanks for being ignorant.
@acNewUpdates hahahaha that's funny and ridiculous. 20% is triple taxes. Because some pieces here don't have any sales tax.
@Old-Red HAHAHAHA
@Deviant-Dork So the OLED is $349 after tax in the US? I thought that was was before tax, good for you guys if it's not.
@Razzy
What's wrong with Switch OLED edition ?
@15roundTKO
Excuse me ? 🤨
Robbing what ??
@Nephestinus I think so! The only things I think might be tricky are the protective cases, like GripCase by Skull & co or others, but only if you really want to use the kickstand. (Skull & Co just put op the OLED style gripcase for preorder). Carry cases and other accessories should do alright.
@Deviant-Dork
Wrong
The funny thing about Nintendo products, is always the same. People complaining and yelling, but when the product is out everyone runs and wants one 😂
I've got £185 in store credit at GAME, and think I may cash it in and upgrade; the urge for the gorgeous screen and sexy white dock and joycon is real.
Kinda wishing I had preordered one, now.
I really wish they would have opted for a glass screen with anti glare.
@Lysanderxx Yeah that's what I'm thinking as well. Too bad that the tight fit controllers & cases probably won't work though
@dedosan Wrong.
@SwitchForce
Mario Kart 8 runs at 60 fps. You are correct; Switch OLED didn't make it happen. My point was, seeing that on a display on the OLED screen will make people forget to blink, because they'll hardly believe what they're seeing. It was also happening on the LED screens of the original Switch, it just didn't look this good.
@Anti-Matter Just looking at the photos, that's some epic glare from the surrounding lights.
