Four years ago (or four years ago yesterday if we're being picky), Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle brought a charming and colourful new flavour of turn-based tactics to Switch. Featuring the unlikely pairing of Super Mario and Ubisoft's Rabbids, the game was nothing short of excellent, not only winning over Nintendo fans, but performing well enough to warrant a sequel.
To celebrate the occasion, the team at Ubisoft has shared a special piece of artwork depicting Mario, Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Peach, and a delightful looking birthday cake. We can't believe it's been four years already...
Fans of the original have lots to look forward to with the upcoming sequel, Sparks of Hope. It was recently revealed that the development team has tripled in size to meet the game's "much bigger ambitions," and the title has already started to pick up award nominations despite not being out until next year.

Despite all the leaks, this was and still is one of the biggest surprises of the Switch era. Can't wait for the sequel.
I felt it was weird because i bought Mario + Rabbids 4 years ago and still not finished yet until today. (Still in world 1)
But... I have finished two of my Rabbids games on Wii last month (Rabbids Go Home, Raving Rabbids 2) when i got the games in June 2021.
@Anti-Matter You are missing out, it's a terrific game.
It was quite the unexpected crossover when it was announced. Hopefully next year's game will be awesome and successful.
I just finished playing through Kingdom Battle after finally deciding to give it a shot when the sequel was announced. And, despite hearing all the praise it's gotten over the years, I was STILL surprised by how excellent it was. Such a thoroughly enjoyable game. Can't wait for the next one!
Terrific game. Just finished last week after picking it up on a deep sale and will save the DK campaign for later. Very excited for the sequel!
One of my fav switch games! DLC was awesome as well.
Roll on the sequel
@Rob3008
But maybe i'm not ready yet to continue my Mario + Rabbids.
My body said otherwise.
Has it really been 4 years? Wow
When you see it's already been four years since Kingdom Battle came out:
I was waiting so much for the sequel and now I really fear they will destroy it with new battle system (grid has gone). We're talking about Ubi, right? So I have confidence they can desttroy it - even if they don't want to.
Grids are a must for predictability of the turns you do while fighting. There's a reason why every TBS title uses grid.
Prove me wrong and I will love it. Predecessor is one of the best Switch titles out there!
Am I the only one who finds it weird that Rabbids became far more of a tolerable, almost likable even, characters right when they had to tone down the "Bwaaah!" attitudes?
They were even insufferable in the TMNT Smash game.
No Yoshi, no (day 1) purchase!!
Still should be a good game though.
Honestly, one of my top 3 games on the switch (Odyssey, Cuphead, Kingdom battle). I cannot believe how good of a game it was. The DLC was really fun as well. Cannot wait for the sequel!. Day one purchase for sure.
Remember when everyone was crapping on this game when it was leaked? good times.
Gonna finally get the DLC for this one, I think. Especially since Sparks of Hope looks to be changing things up a lot, it's a chance to revisit that original formula (though the DLC seems to dial the mobility of the base game up several million notches)
The original is my favorite game on Switch, I’m cautiously excited about the sequel, but as @Coxula mentioned, I’m worried about the big changes.
This game has big expectations to live up to. The original was a complete surprise, with an amazing soundtrack, incredible gameplay, some of the best visual jokes I remember of any game, and some of the best dlc ever released to add to all that.
The sequel doesn't really have the benefit of surprise, but it does have the expectations... Which, combined with the huge install base, will probably make it sell much better at launch. So they better only launch when it's a finished product with some same old, some surprise.
It'd be an interesting idea to have several third parties with equal love for the ip and their own product go entirely wild with what a Mario game can be. Or Zelda, as with Cadence of Hyrule.
4 years? Jeez, here in my mind it felt like it was released like last year or 2 years ago.
Time flies, man.
I'm more worried about the fact the Wii U happened almost 10 years ago.
Can't wait for Sparks oh Hope!
@Coxula exactly. I filled out a survey they had about this game & every opportunity i said, please don't ruin it by forcing free movement. I hope it's like dragon quest 11 where u can move around but it really doesn't matter, & have the option for turn based, but i agree w u, it's Ubisoft, ofc.
@erikharrison it's on sale every month, for $7.50 for just the DK expansion, or $10 for season pass, in US eShop at least.
@Anti-Matter Same, I got it a year ago and I still have to finish it. My progress is likely slowed by the challenge maps, I like doing 100% runs and some of those are quite challenging!
It took them 4 years to make a sequel to this game. 4 YEARS! I really don't understand modern gamers and their thirst for HD/4k/HDR games when they take this damn long to make.
@Chamver You can't rush art.
