Capcom has a long history of teaming up with Marvel, and has even allowed some of its characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate most recently, but would it be open to the likes of Ryu and Ken one day appearing in the brutal, violent and bloody Mortal Kombat series?
Apparently not, according to Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono. During an on-stage interview with Eurogamer at EGX last month, Ono was asked if he was the one who denied Ed Boon's request to add a Street Fighter character to Mortal Kombat.
While it's true the proposal was made, he wasn't the one who personally knocked Boon back:
It's true that a proposal for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat was rejected by Capcom. But it wasn't me personally! There were many people at the company that felt that it wasn't a good fit for our characters. I actually met Ed at the Brazil game show and spoke to him personally about it. So it's true - but I didn't make the decision!
Eurogamer followed this up by asking if it was a case of the two worlds not mixing. Ono confirmed it was indeed a "major concern" for Capcom at the time.
Would Capcom be open to any crossovers in its own game, though? Although nothing was specifically mentioned about a Mortal Kombat character coming to the Street Fighter series in the future, Ono did note how Capcom liked the idea of guest fighters:
We don't necessarily rule anything out. We've had our share of crossovers over the years - Marvel vs. Capcom, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. From Ed Boon's side they had Injustice that had various universes colliding. It didn't work out this time, but Capcom is interested in doing that kind of thing. If we can get something we feel good about, we could move quite quickly to make that happen.
Do you think Capcom made the right call? How would you feel about a character like Ryu appearing in Mortal Kombat? Would it work better the other way round? Leave a comment below.

Street fighter definitely looks more like a fight where Mortal Kombat... well looks like mortal combat, as in to the death.
Streetfighter 2 had set the stage for competitive fighting games but personally I think over the years it didn't add enough fresh ideas to the series. MK series, Dragon Ball (Fighter Z) and Smash Bros have refreshed themselves. Maybe Capcom should just lend Smash Bros more of its characters.
Good call. Not that it couldn't happen (Akuma or other final bosses), but something about SF/MK just doesn't align thematically.
MK is too violent for SF. Can't imagine Ryu being ripped apart. He suits better in Smash.
Who really wants to see Chun-Li get her legs pulled off?
Yeah no. Mortal combat is on its swan song. And hasn't made a good game in years. Capcom doesn't want anything to do with that money hungry company.
Big fan of both games but the only person I could ever see fitting in to MK is Akuma. The more I think about it the better it sounds actually. Hes got a strong move set and he is pure evil. Naturally one of his fatalities would have to be his iconic raging demon.
Think the best way is to do a proper crossover game than a single fighter. That way you can have a style that meets both series in the middle ground.
Though Vega's a serial killer isnt he?
As a wimp who doesn’t like gore, I’m happy to not have images of Ryu and Chun Li getting their heads ripped off.
They should use Killer Instinct fighters... they performed fatalities as well. Here you go and you're welcome for this fabulous idea. Now bring Orchid over there she will use her legs to kick some butts... spinning bird orchid kick. lol
Sounds fair enough. Though some characters such as Akuma would be a better fit for Mortal Kombat. Possibly Vega or Bison. Most of the SF cast are not killers and would sooner pull their punches than actually kill anyone.
I suppose anyone with a pc can just look up Mugen and get their cross over fix.
A shame really. Street Fighter and mortal kombat are probably the two biggest fighting series in history. It would be a cool novelty game if nothing else. I do see how the tone wouldn't be right though. Both games are quite different.
I always favored MK myself. Call me a gore hound but hey fatalities are alot more entertaining than just knocking a guy down and going YOU WIN! I like a bit of comedy with my fighters and the finishers are so rediculous and over the top. It's all in good fun! Like horror movies. If you're into that sorta thing and i am.
Thanks, I don't need to see Ryu getting his head cut off or his heart explode.
Personally I feel the fluid stylised Street Fighter animation would stick out like a sore thumb next to the odd upright movements of Mortal Kombat characters. It definitely wouldn’t be a good mix.
I don't get you guys.
There are Street Fighter characters who would work well for Mortal Kombat, like Akuma and M. Bison. It would not be out of character for them to perform something like the Raging Demon or Psycho Crusher as a fatality move.
Maybe a different Capcom franchise would work better with Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil's Wesker or Mr X anyone?
Tbh if you add Third Strike in the mix there are quite a few wierd ass characters that could fit in MK(Necros, Twelve, Q). But if there was ever a crossover i highly doubt they would go for c-tier fighters instead of the more recognizable ones. But the real problem as others have mentioned are the fatalities. Capcom wouldn't want their characters being ripped apart and humiliated in every possible way. This is the same reason why we'll also never see a Nintendo character in MK.
There are only two characters that would fit in MK. Akuma and Bison. Those two alone would be able to do scary fatalitys
No Mortal kombat character would fit in Smash Bros either, except for perhaps Johnny Cage.
You know they did have DC characters with MK before so why were those a good fit but not street fighter? Granted they did tone down the fatalities in that game but still it happened.
Why not do mk vs street fighter with a more light hearted approach? Give each mk character a silly fatality without all the gross or maybe bring back friendships. I've wanted to see those again after all the time without them.
@Savino
Exactly! Mk has been very good since MK 9. I also quite enjoyed Deadly alliance and Deception! Clearly that guy hasn't played the last 3 games.
MK sucks. I don't care.
Growing up, I used to DREAM of the two fighting games mixing. I realized how silly that would be as I got older.
Street fighter sucks! At least every once since 2. Why else do you think they kept re releasing different versions on SF2? It's the only one that really matters.
I would hate to see my girl Chun-Li get hacked to bits. Her laughter in the early games is joyful. And I generally find the screaming of women to be quite distressing.
@Silly_G
Don't worry, you eventually get used to them
@Silly_G
Depending on why they are screaming you may have a whole different opinion. Wink Wink!
glad to see most people agreeing that mixing these properties is no bueno. ...Street Fighter is more classy than MK. ...MK is literally just gore porn.
@Quincy
Because characters like R. mika are so classy.
Oversized barely covered knockers bouncing all over are quite porny are they not?
@Zeldafan79 : But then they'd just cry wolf after, and I'd lose half the house, but gain a cell.
@Silly_G
Then you'd be the one screaming. Especially if they threw you in a cell with some burly bald guy named bubba. Yes that would be very distressing!
Good. Street Fighter may be violent, but it's not gory, it's all fairly PG. Not remotely the same level of violence as in Mortal Kombat, which is extreme and revolting (which I suppose it's meant to be). That's not necessarily meant as a criticism of Mortal Kombat (though it's not really my cup of tea), but thematically/tonally they're not a good fit. DC is a better fit for a Mortal Kombat crossover as they're desperate to be ultra-violent and gritty (while at the same time marketing their stuff to kids), but even they balked at having their characters involved in torture porn fatalities.
@Zeldafan79 Don't be hatin' on R. Mika she has been amazing since the Alpha series!
Her presentation might be a bit titillating but she is not a sensual character in her actions or personality. she's a wrestler and just really... eh.. showy.
Not a fan of Mortal Kombat at all. The over the top gore might have been cool when I was twelve, but I'd be embarrassed to be caught playing it today.
Ryu is also a Power Ranger now, lets not forget that lol
Ryu and most of the main SF cast don’t belong in MK, but I could see someone like Akuma or even M. Bison being a good fit.
@Jaalsky if anything Mortal Kombat is far more successful than ever, and the last MK games have been much better received than the latest SF entires
Put Twelve in a Mortal Kombat game.
At this point, I'd hardly care about a crossover. I've gotten tired of both series, and their constant in-game reminders of the unpurchased add-on content just pushes me away further.
I'd be just fine with them letting Guile go to MK. I think he deserves a few fatalities for being an annoying charge character and for the CPU cheating with him not having to charge his movies.
@Jaalsky I mean if you want to be that ignorant about it then I guess.
Brainiac: "What is the secret of your power? Tell me!"
Ryu: "The answer lies in the heart of battle."
SF and MK don't mix well IMO, but maybe Darkstalkers? The "gore factor" is there for both, more or less. On second thought, I'm not interested. I guess MK doesn't really mix well with other major fighting franchises. They should just keep featuring "guest fighters" that DO fit the MK theme.
@Kidfunkadelic83 As cool as the Raging Demon move is, I still don't like how it kept getting censored in every game. Maybe it'll become uncensored in Mortal Kombat perhaps.
@hakjie11 I'll be honest Street Fighter is a solid fighter. So much so that they are still selling street fighter 2. There's no need to reinvent the wheel too much. If you're looking for a change may I introduce you to the spin off titles that they are able to be flexible with like Marvel vs Capcom, Darkstalkers, Capcom vs SNK
Mortal Kombat is an odd game. We are so used to seeing those characters get hacked to bits that it is normal. If you were to bring characters from other games like street fighter, or zelda, or any other franchise it would be demoralizing for those characters.
It makes perfect sense while I like MK especially since the reboot compared to SF it's just trash on many levels.
Vega would be a good fit though.
Makes no sense. M. Bison is a murderer. They rewrote Charlie's death so it wouldn't look like murder took place in the Street Fighter universe, however.
@Alucard83 Yes. Jago, Orchi, & Fulgore should have been brought over to MK. Maybe, Maya, Kim, & Tusk as well.
By not doing fatalities' and if u avoid brutalities, MK is essentially a slightly more violent version of SF
