It's financial results season, the most wonderful time of the year! Well, maybe not, but the report from publisher Marvelous! was nevertheless interesting as it gave updated sales figures on its most recent titles. As the report only runs up to the end of March there was no further update on sales figures for Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, but there is a near-notable landmark for Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin.
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin now has sales exceeding 950,000 copies across all versions, so it's clearly close to hitting the magical one million mark; the figure represents a jump since the late January update.
The rice farming sim / sidescrolling action title is pretty unique, which will have contributed to its impressive results. We gave it a recommendation in our Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin review.
Let us know whether you've mastered rice farming yet in this one.

Just waiting on her Nendoroid...
Waiting on a French localization
Now, Sakuna 2: Rice Patty Boogaloo.
Waiting for a star to fall.
Or maybe Sakuna 2: Let’s Duet Rice and Slow.
A multiplayer where the one that only wants to farm can, and the one that only wants to explore can and gather resources.
My GOTY last year. Such a great game. I also learned a lot about rice farming as well. Does that mean it is edutainment? Lol.
Every character had a growth arc even the villians.
I'm totally gonna get it once I get through some of my Switch backlog. Seems like my jam~
Mad props, yo. I know that edging is a real hard thing to do
Bought 2 copies myself😁
Glad to see this game is selling well. I wanted the Switch version but the collector's edition was sold out so I purchased the collector's edition for PS4 instead. I haven't played it yet but I'll get to it one of these days. Maybe I'll play it on my PS5 soon.
Good! This was a great, cozy little gem and the more who get to play it, the better!
I'm glad it did well but man I didn't like it at all 🤷♂️. Pretty but that's it for me.
It's a lovely game. I've gotten distracted by others but will get back to it.
I lost interest when the game pulled the immersion away from me.
At some point your available field space expands from a tiny square into a huge plot of land, and there's a big cutscene of everyone planting rice in the new field.
But then you aren't allowed to actually ever step on the new field. You're told "hey you just focus on this tiny square like before, and the rest of us will mimic exactly what you do on the big field". It's like..... I understand that it's a way for the game to give you more rice per harvest, but it seems so ridiculous that the actions of one small person in the small field will entirely affect the yields of the larger, offscreen field.
And I want to be able to wander through the big field we just had this huge song and dance about. No?
Lost interest super hard immediately when I realised that this is what was happening.
I'm glad to hear it, I loved that game! Spend half my christmas holidays playing it. Remember my mum asking what I was playing and she certainly did not expect the answer "I'm dehusking rice"
U know what'd push it to 1 million? A discount. Unless it's first party nintendo I buy every game on sale so come on.
Wow, that's really impressive, isn't it. It looked lovely, but for some reason I feared the game wouldn't do so well. Glad that the marketing push did well (I was surprised to hear ads for it on, like, a pretty obscure podcast about Japanese ghosts).
Will definitely get a the game in the future.
I am interested in this title, and I've read that no DLC is planned. I am always tentative about buying new games these days, however, because it seems I invariably learn that a "Complete Edition" appears in the months or year-plus afterward...
I got the collector's edition on Switch, but sold it along with several others because I felt I had to many... I... regret my decision.
I've been curious about this for a while, but there are way too many other games competing for my attention. Backlog seems to get bigger every week.
@Kieroni Don’t hype it up for yourself, just go in and let it do it’s quirky thing! Worth it imo. (Bought it, but I haven’t put a lot of time into it yet.) I liked what I played back when it came out, but yeah, working on my backlog too. Being a little more strict this year about finishing the games I start.
@BlubberWhale I'm not trying to hype it up, just my Switch is filled to the brim, and I'm trying to finish some of them to uninstall instead of doing the non-solution of just buying a bigger SD card. XD Backlogs are such a silly problem to have...
@Kieroni I hear ya friend. I bought a 512gb card so hopefully it will “solve” my problem, haha. Nah the real fix is coming from me also strictly curbing my buying habits, and just enjoying what I have. 😛 Backlog problems are fun problems to have! So many fun, curated-by-me games!
And yeah, I didn’t think you were, just more of a general precautionary recommendation... 👍 (My point being that I think you’ll enjoy it if you don’t fall into a hype trap, or set unreasonable expectations... sounds like you’ll be just fine. Whoever described it as “cozy” was right on.)
I'm sure this has happened faster due to the cute art and great production.
It's a very nerdy game about rice farming when you get to it. ^^
Wonderful little title, and with a little luck and a great theme, Sakuna has turned into a mini phenomenon in Japan! So happy to hear it will probably cross the 1 million mark later in the year.
