It's been quite the week for retro discoveries. Alongside GoldenEye 007's cancelled remake resurfacing online, DuckTales has been in the news after an unearthed prototype build made its way online, revealing a previously unreleased song called "Map".
As it turns out, additional elements were removed from Capcom's acclaimed NES platformer than we'd realised. Speaking with Kotaku for a recent feature on DuckTales' development, producer Darlene Lacey revealed further information about cut content, explaining:
There was also originally an option for Scrooge to give up his fortune, but this seemed out of character, so we removed that. ...Scrooge told his nephews: ‘There really is more important treasure than this. That is . . . Dream and Friends.’ It seemed so earnest and dramatic, I was so tempted to leave it as is, but I knew I couldn’t. So, I changed it to the more polished, but forgettable ‘Right, lads! I couldn’t have done it without you. I really am the richest duck in the world.’ I love that fans found out about the original ending. It was the better line!
Joined by fellow producer David Mullich for this feature, both detailed what it was like working with Disney back in the late '80s, who were looking to enter the gaming market. Like many licenced games, that also brought about restrictions on what Capcom could do, and Lacey confirms they had to get creative.
It's how we ended up with Scrooge's pogo jump, explaining:
We also needed to make sure that the content met Disney standards. For example [in another title] one licensee had Donald Duck clubbing baby seals! It was also important that the Disney characters weren’t killing things. The Disney game designs had to be more creative than simple point and shoot games. That’s how elements such as Scrooge’s pogo jump with his cane in DuckTales came about.
We recommend reading the full feature when you can. It offers an interesting perspective on this classic platformer's development and, if you're like us, we're always fascinated to hear more of these stories.
Would you have preferred the original ending to DuckTales? Let us know in the comments.

All these Duck Tales articles here and Kotaku had me thinking it was going on NSO or a rerelease 😔
@GannonBanned Exactly, all these Ducktales images are getting me excited for something that's not the matter at hand, haha.
I'm sure Disney heard those plans and said that was stupid.
@Peteykins I enjoyed the remaster, but it did play similar to the original. If you enjoyed the original, you will enjoy the remaster.
Having said that, watch that it does come to Switch right after you buy it on Wii U. 😬
I thought there was a physical release for Wii U too. I don’t know what it sells for now. You could try to buy physical and just resell it later.
I would love for the remaster to come to Switch, as this is a great game. Also, the image of Donald just using a golf club to send seals into orbit just popped into my head, and I find it way too humorous.
HAHA, I always wished that at the end of the game you could swim around in the money during the credits or something
@GannonBanned Capcom should really get the disney afternoon collection to the switch. It would be a no-brainer buy for me. Throw Little Nemo on NSO!
@Crockin Yep. Six NES Disney games available to purchase for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Yet, not available on any of Nintendo’s modern consoles. Such a shame.
@Tandy255 @Crockin
Yeah that's one of the stupidest decisions ever, to not put those games on the system with the biggest audience for them... Nintendo gamers. It's almost as bad as when Ubisoft delayed the Wii-U version of Rayman Legends so that it could release at the same time as the (previously unannounced) PS3 and X360 versions. It would have been the major release that Wii U owners would all pick up since it came during that long drought of games we had for Wii U back then. By the time it did release, many other Wii U games were available by then and many would-be customers (myself included) didn't buy it out of protest.
@GamerGrandpa I'm sure it's due to some kind of licensing limitation, but come on it's basically free money on the table. Same deal with Konami and SOTN/Rondo and activision with the THPS remakes.
@Paperboy ugh - I’ve never even played it and I had the NES and LOVE Donald Duck’s family 😩
That would have been completely against the spirit of Scrooge as envisioned by Barks and Rosa. Then again, Duck Tales always were a watered down version of Duck comics.
They seriously need to remake all the old Disney games from NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, and Super NES for modern systems. Those were some of the best Disney games of the time: Aladdin, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 1 & 2, Talespin, Darkwing Duck, DuckTales 1 & 2, Goof Troop, Lion King, Pinocchio, Little Mermaid, Tarzan, The Jungle Book, Pocahontas, Toy Story, Mickey Mouse's Magical Quest and Illusion series, Donald Duck's Quackshot and Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, etc.
@Terra Reportedly, it is still possible to see the broke Scrooge ending in the final game but it requires some very specific setup.
Due to that, I read, Select can be used in the game to exchange some amount of money to recover a hit point anytime?
@ArlongKing01 @Peteykins @GamerGrandpa @Crockin — I know big companies don’t like to use Kickstarter, but they would easily raise funds for Switch ports of the Remaster and the Disney Afternoon Collection.
We can dream...
@Tandy255 O they have the $$$$ to do it. they just don't do it!
I loved Ducktales NES and still own the cartridge... haven't hooked up my NES in a while though.
The DuckTales remake was a lot like the original, except way slower and more boring in my opinion. The cutscenes were poorly paced and I didn't love the art-style overall.
All I want is for the Disney Afternoon Collection to come to Switch... this seems like a no-brainer, but licensing issues are likely to blame.
Nah, not a bad ending, but I like the one we have.
DuckTales Remastered & the Disney Afternoon Collection would be great on the Switch, and would be day one purchases. I already own them on the Xbox, but to be able to play them on the go? Take my Money Nintendo!
I loved the NES Version as a Kid, and still do now. The Moon Theme is one of the greatest pieces of Video Game Music of all time. Jake Kaufman did an incredible job on Remastered, and I’m not gonna lie, I teared up a little when I first booted up the Moon Level.
All the recent news with DuckTales, I want a new game.
Would love this on NSO
