Majesco Entertainment has announced that it will be giving Nintendo DS platformer Monster Tale a fresh spin on current hardware.
Currently only teased for "modern game platforms" – although, you'd imagine Switch is a safe bet with the original being a Nintendo exclusive – Monster Tale will be re-released later this year. Fans of the game will no doubt remember its half-platforming, half-pet-management gameplay starring the human-monster pairing of Ellie and Chomp, a duo tasked with ridding Monster World of the evil Kid-Kings.
It first appeared on DS back in 2011, with an eventual 3DS version set to be called Monster Tale Ultimate also being announced a few years later. That game sadly never arrived, so perhaps this new release will finally give fans the 'Ultimate' game they were hoping for.
Players in Monster Tale experience a seamless blend of classic gameplay styles of puzzle-platformers, Metroidvania, and pet management as they seek to rid the fantastic Monster World of the evil ragtag group the Kid-Kings. Working together Ellie and Chomp must learn new skills in order to return the world to the rightful hands of the monsters and help Ellie return home.
Monster Tale features a beautifully crafted world of 2D pixel artwork reminiscent of classic 90’s titles. As players explore the world as Ellie, they’ll unlock new abilities for her to use to overcome the obstacles she faces. They’ll also help to train her monster companion Chomp so that he can evolve and aid Ellie in their adventures.
We'll keep an eye out for more news on this one as we progress through the year, but feel free to let us know whether or not you've played it with a comment below. Are you hoping this new release comes to Switch?

Sure but....did anyone ask for an ultamite version?
I miss that game.
@TheSmashTheorist What’s it matter if they didn’t?
That was a pretty fun game, definitely looking forward to a Switch version.
I expect this to skip the Switch. Maybe I'll be wrong, but it just seems like something publishers love doing with Nintendo consoles. Release the original version on a Nintendo system, then skip subsequent consoles on newer releases.
I never played the original, but it definitely looks like something I would enjoy. I'll keep an eye on this!
I've near played the original before. Although, it could be a fun game to try out.
I managed to pick this up for the DS 5ish years ago for $5. It's really fun, and I enjoyed my time with it. Always glad to see a game having a chance to be experienced by more people.
This is not my type of game and so many look alike IP's put there is becoming boring. Where is the innovation at?
Even though I haven’t gotten the ds version, might be a good game to try out for switch
I would rather Henry Hatsworth but that game NEEDS two screens..
@IronMan30 Not when it comes to small scale games like this. Combined with Switch’s success, I definitely can see it coming to the platform.
This game is lovely. It's a great introductory level metroidvania. I get fed up trying to stumble through more tricky metroidvania but this just has an easy charm and presentation that is much more up my street for the genre. If you're into La Mulana and the like then perhaps this is a bit too Lite for you.
Doesn't sound like there's much reason to double-dip, but 'yay' for the devaluing of my DS cart I guess...
Heyyy, love this game. Hope they fix the issues with evolution.
I was wondering what the developers were doing all this time, but it seems the last game they made was Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion on the 3DS back in 2012!
That game had some lovely sprite work but the game itself sadly wasn't any good.
DreamRift were founded by the lead designer and developer of Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, but Monster Tale and Epic Mickey were all that they made.
Will they do a LRG release on the 3DS after so many years or just Switch and PS4
I think I remember this one - platforming on the top screen, monster raising on the bottom - something like that?
Another game for the SwitchDS.
Oh my YESS!!!! Have always wanted to play this one.
Tried hunting this game down a few year back but surprise surprise, it had achieved that 'rarity' status and as such its price tag was greatly inflated. Undeterred, I once again succumbed to the only alternative that we have to access games of yesteryear, I downloaded the ROM version for my DS' R4 card.
@brandonbwii true enough, I guess. This was supposed to be pretty good on the DS and Switch makes sense for a release.
Monster Tale, the short, but very cute and fun monster-metroidvania game we never got in Europe cause "There is no point in releasing in Europe a game players will surely pirate before we even finish the localization".
Been years and that comment still bothers me, especially since I had to import the game to give them a totally 'impossible' european sale.
Really hope they developed a little more trust in their playerbase since then, would love to see the game finally coming to Europe 10 years later.
@BakaKnight
Piracy was such a point of contention for the DS that its effects lingered on in publisher's minds for the 3DS too.

3DS piracy would begin to emerge mid-2013, but it took a while to really take off because 3DS flash cart devices were not easy to operate like DS flash carts.
Always delighted to hear about re-releases like this. It's a great shame when interesting games are lost to the ages. I never even heard about this game when it was released. By the time it entered my orbit it'd become way too rare for me to play it.
Wow, now that's weird!
I saw this game in a video a year or two ago, and just yesterday I tried to think of all the DS games I still want to get, and I remembered this, but the name escaped me. And now it's coming back? Cool.
I had this on DS. It was pretty fun game that I would want to play again.
I wonder how this would work on today’s systems. As I recall, this game made good use of the DS’s dual screens.
Played it a few years ago, and it was nothing to write home about.
Not bad, just nothing special.
Glad for those who liked it though!
I definitely remember this one. Never finished it and I sold it back. Interesting concept. meh execution.
I remember this game! One of the better Metroidvanias on the DS, and that console had THREE whole Castlevania games on it. I absolutely loved it there and I am thrilled for it to finally make a comeback.
Okay this is awesome. I wish some other companies would port there ds/3ds masterpieces (ahem capcom). I mean it's kinda dumb phoenix wright collection doesn't at least include apollo justice trilogy or at least have them in a separate collection. That's excusable though because the first three phoenix wright games are the definitive experience of the series and a great place to start. No no my problem is a little game called ghost trick. It's easily better than any phoenix wright game imo and that's from someone who's grown up on the games. It is a perfect game to release on switch. In fact, they practically already did it. The games on ios and android in hd already. This game is a masterpiece and has extremely likable characters. I highly recommend for it's storytelling, art, and gameplay. It's worth getting a copy believe me. It flopped horribly but got a reputation as a gem. It is a must play ds game.
One of the more unique and enjoyable metroidvanias out there. Highly recommended. It’s like the cuddly version of Bloodstained: RotN.
Have been meaning to get this game on DS for a while now but looks like I won't need to bother.
One of the best DS games, but I have the original and do not need a re-release
The game has it’s charms and is pretty damn solid to play.
This game reminded me a lot of Monster World IV when I played it. I hope they fix the issue that prevents you from unlocking all your monsters' powers if you didn't feed them all the right items the first time. I hope they also release it on 3DS as promised but that's extremely unlikely to happen.
Great news! IIRC, this game toward the very end of the DS, and thus was overlooked by many.
I'll believe it when I see it after years of no-show Ultimate, but I'd love this to actually come out!
@TheSmashTheorist Don't know if anyone was waiting for a ultamite version. Ultimate version? Maybe.
@TheSmashTheorist totally me, i was always searching for the DS game but it was always too rare or expensive...now its my chance to finally play it.
@Onion They were just talking about making the first game available, not that a new MT game for the Switch was being made.
Hmm, I wonder if it's still coming out this year.
Did anything ever happen with this?? I loved this game, it was fun and different, I'd love to see a new version. It wasn't perfect, but it was a hidden gem.
@Kitsune_Rei they’re still working on it.
It’s just taking them longer then they thought.
@Greatluigi Do you have a source on that?
@Nickfan1 there’s a subreddit dedicated to monster tale and one of the posts has a picture of majesco’s twitter account replying to someone who thinks the re-release was cancelled.

Here’s the link to the post.
@Greatluigi Well that is certainly a decent source. Thanks.
@Nickfan1 your welcome. 😀
@Greatluigi Yaaay thank you! I'm always happy to wait as long as a project is still going forward!
