It's now been just over three years since Bayonetta 3 was first confirmed to be in development for Nintendo Switch, but since then, we've had little to go on other than little reassurances telling us that things are going "very well," "very smoothly," "fine," and "very well" again. Blimey.
It looks like we might still be a fair way away from learning more, however; PlatinumGames co-founder Hideki Kamiya has already told fans that he hopes to share more on the title in 2021, but thanks to a new interview with VGC, it seems that nothing's set in stone just yet. Here's what Kamiya had to say when asked about this potential 2021 update:
"It’s not really our position to say, but… it’s January. We’ve got to have something come out, right? I guess it’s safe to expect that something will come out. There’s still a lot of the year left is what I’m saying."
When asked for further clarification on what we can expect in this eventual update, Kamiya jokes that fans should "reset and forget" about the game so that any new announcements will be a welcome surprise:
"I understand it’s driving the fans crazy! In light of that, my suggestion would be that maybe we should all reset and forget about Bayonetta 3. Then when something finally does happen, it will be a nice surprise, won’t it?"
In the same interview, PlatinumGames also confirmed that the Astral Chain IP is now fully owned by Nintendo after originally being a co-owned franchise.

Yikes, suggesting we forget about it doesn't sound promising
My take on this is that we won't have to expect Bayo 3 to come out this year. But who knows. Development probably isn't going as well as they have been telling people.
I guess I've still lots of time to finish Bayonetta 1 and play Bayonetta 2. Sweet.
@auck I don't think thats what he was aiming for, more of a:
"Stop worrying about it and when it arrives it will be a good day"
@pixelpatch Yeah, I reread the article and that's the kind of vibe I'm getting, my bad
Kamiya is kind of a wildcard. Seems like a bad idea to have someone like that making statements about your hotly anticipated game.
Everyone's asking for Bayonetta 3 info but I'm wondering what happened to Babylon's Fall
Can we get details on that? It looks sick
@Snakesglowcaps I agree, that just don't shine a good light on the company when you basically say "you'll get it when you get it"
Bayonetta wasn't great anyway.
Hideki Kamiya: part-time game director, full-time troll.
Looking forward to Bayonetta 3 whenever it happens.
Doesn't sound like it's not coming to me. Just to chill out. But this site and probably the rest of Nintendo fandom is gonna have a fit over this anyways.
I like the gameplay of these games but the character dialogue s so childish. I'm not against "foul" language but in these games it seems to be used just to be "edgey".
I already did. It comes out when it comes out, IF it comes out. Life is too short, and I have plenty of games to play right now.
I don’t think this means Bayonetta 3 is certain to not come out in 2021, I just think Nintendo doesn’t like to announce anything more than 4-6 months away any more.
Switch Successor launch title.
Calling it.
They announced this game way too soon. I know doing that makes people happy in the short term, but it ends up agitating people in the long run. But I’d still rather they take their time and release a quality product.
This brilliant saga continues! Xx
From my Amazon history: (Ordered on August 21, 2018 (1 item)
Bayonetta 3 - Nintendo Switch)
Way ahead of him. I enjoyed the first two and will get the third when it comes out, but as I've seen nothing to get excited about, I'm really not excited about it or thinking about it. The only reason I'm reminded of it is these absolutely pointless "updates".
I have so much to play, and I’ve only platinumed half of B2 still.
Take your time and make it amazing.
"It's simple, we hyped you too early! Just forget anything ever happened, okay?"
I understand this is a joke. But it's been three years, and we still haven't seen anything. This situation reminds me of ScaleBound.
Is Nintendo stopping Platinum from showing Bayonetta 3? If so, why? I don't remember Nintendo/Platinum keeping quiet with Bayo 2.
It will likely release this year but I can understand wanting a dial back on hype. Folks think if they don’t get a trailer every month then the project exploded. Just let devs work. Putting pressure just means you get a rushed release.
This guy doesn't know gamers very well.
I refuse! Boy, was this game announced way too soon or what?
I hate the fandom putting pressure on the artists. Let them just do their work. It is what the fans want after all anyway. Nobody would be happy to get something sooner that nobody is satisfied with.
Awaiting the game's cancelation in the near future
I bet this game was only announced to offset complaints about the Bayonetta 2 port. It was just a commission at that point. 3 years isn’t a long development period for a modern AAA game
Not a very positive comment and not an ideal way to treat people who are ultimately his customers. I still think it’ll end up canned....no artwork, no screenshots and not even a synopsis doesn’t really inspire me with confidence. The guy has a reputation as being a troll and has some huge ego but at the end of the day people want to see results instead of his continued nonsense.
im scared that this game may be in development hell. if he wants us to forget about it they shouldnt have shown it off 3 years ago!!
@DonkeyKongBigBoy thats your opinion, i personally love bothe games, you just dont like the style/story, and thats fine! : )
How can we forget something that we know little to nothing about?
I wouldn't expect Bayonetta 3 for this year. They're taking it waaay too easy.
Anyway, there'll be tons of great games (first and third) coming out this year, so it's fine by me.
We can’t forget...The shadow remain cast!
Guess the witch hunts are over (at least during 2021)
@Rpg-lover The headline more or less exactly summarises the article.
People need to leave the man alone. He is under a nda and can't discuss it. When Nintendo feels okay to show something then we will see it. Why are people so impatience these days?
I can wait patiently as long as it takes. But I’ll never forget Bayonetta 3.
Oof bro. Thats like nintendo saying forget about botw 2
I can wait. It gets easier everyday Nintendo doesn't announce anything. I remember being young and wanting more news. But I'm just a jaded Nintendo dude who hate kids nowadays who complain about not having any trailer to watch or news to read.
People need to leave the man alone. He is under a nda and can't discuss it.
@Hellburner918 I wish he'd leave us alone. He single-handedly has a talent for making NL comment threads unpleasant.
Okay, look, the guy is SUPER talented and is a master of his craft BUT he’s highly unprofessional.
Yeah... I understand what he's trying to say, this is damage-control. Although, you really don't want to tell your fans to "forget about" your product.
If there's nothing to show then just say that. Thank everyone for their interest and assure them that when you do have something more concrete then everything will be shared.
This is it. Scalebound 2
Just let devs work. Putting pressure just means you get a rushed release.
@Ryu_Niiyama I block Kamiya from my consciousness unless I'm reading articles like this one. Do you think he's the type to rush or delay? I have no idea, personally.
Better late than never.
Is it fans putting pressure on the developers or them putting these messages out about things going fine every couple of months? I doubt.
Um maybe dont announce it so soon?
The thing to do is read the interview rather than let this site wind you up. Nintendolife cherry picked some snippets designed to draw out the hypersensitive, I pulled out these:
"Kamiya: Also, since we’re self-publishing, there are no publishers to get mad at me this time, so I’ll be sharing things online, putting up screenshots whenever I like…"
He's not allowed to say anything. Obviously they're being gagged by Nintendo.
Also this reaffirms it.
"We don’t have that much say over projects that we’re not publishing. And we understand different titles require different approaches, so we respect the publisher’s decisions."
@COVIDberry All he did was respond to people comments and said what he is allowed to say. Its people who continue harass him about it, and its people who make NL comment section not very fun.
In other words...no Bayonetta 3 news this year aside from another million "game is progressing smoothly" responses.
Further substantiating my theory about Bayonetta 3 being a Switch Pro/2 launch game! This is kind of embarrassing for PG, anyway. I wonder if Nintendo pressured them into haphazardly announcing it.
I'm guessing whatever direction they've taken Bayonetta 3 is not pleasing Nintendo or the game isn't running very well on the switch. This is bad news though, and to be honest I gave up on the game about a year ago. It's simply been too long and I feel like I'll be disappointed no matter how it turns out now.
This is starting to remind me of Scalebound. Platinum have also relinquished their shares in Astral Chain and with no new news on either B3 or Babylon's Fall, it could be the Developers are in financial trouble after biting off more than they could chew.
Actually i want to know why he keeps blabbering on about it.
Are people badgering him on Twitter?
Yeah i think we do need to forget about it, I'm so over it that i might not even bother buying it when it does come out.
Thats how much I've forgotten.
Well, that's a cop-out if I've ever heard one.
Nah, it won’t. Clearly revealing this game was a PR mistake, as honestly is this comment about resetting lol.
Hideki Kamiya would block every single person on this website on Twitter lol
This statement sounds, to me, more like "We can't talk about it, Nintendo has to talk about it, and they're not talking about anything, but put 2 and 2 together and we already said 2021, soo....you work it out."
What he means is that people should stop asking about the game like annoying kids on a road trip, asking their father "are we there yet??". Grow up people.
An easy way to "surprise" me is to not tell me about this until it's almost ready for release. Or better, just drop it on me out of nowhere with no warning. It's not our fault we keep asking "but when?".
Literally never
This is just the polite way of saying "why don't you guys just leave me alone for a day and stop asking the same damn question when you know full well I can't say anything until we are ready".
They never should have announced it at all. All companies should stop announcing that far ahead.
This company is very clearly in need of a new marketing director.
“My suggestion would be that maybe we should all reset and forget about Bayonetta 3.”
Um ok. But you were the ones that announced it, checks notes, 3 years ago...
I wonder whether it’s really driving fans crazy or whether it’s this generation have no patience and have to have everything now?
Tencent will buy Platinum and then the game will become a timed exclusive on iOS before reaching a wider audience on Android in 2022.
It'll happen when it happens; I'd much prefer they take as much time as possible in order to craft a sublime game.
It's hard to forget when it's constantly being brought up. As far as I'm concerned, it's another Earthbound 64, aka vaporware.
@popey1980 the latter...
Kamiya's latest take here is intriguing. It falls into a bold prediction I've had in my mind for the past 2-2.5 years. That prediction is Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 will release on Switch in the same release year in the future. Possibly Metroid Prime Trilogy HD will also come out in the same release year as Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 as well (as I've always believed since the 2018 Game Awards that Nintendo's plan was to always release Prime Trilogy and Prime 4 in the same calendar year [Trilogy early 1st half of the year, 4 holiday season]).
However; Nintendo could release Prime Trilogy HD this year (if Imran Khan at Game Informer from his Twitter feed circa late 2018 has been right this entire time and the Trilogy is finished and ready for release at any given moment) to celebrate Metroid's 35th Anniversary. However; depending on how development is going with Bayonetta 3 it could be a 2nd half of 2021 release this year too. Too soon to tell. The soonest I think we'll know that though is after April 1st of this year. Exciting times I have to admit. Let's see what Nintendo and Platinum do. Out!
When it happens, it happens. Stop worrying about it.
A bit off topic, but I think Platinum needs to focus on games that have been announced instead of planning even more games. Lately their exciting updates are "We got another game in the works!" and I wonder what about the ones they've already been working on?
There is so much games nowadays, so it's fine.
I don't want a unfinished Bayonetta 3 release. Cyberpunk 2077...
Platinum games rarely need much fixes on release.
@tkdboy1889
I agree. Partly because of that MS canceled scalebound. They thought that it wasn't going anywhere.
That's what happens when you announce games 30 years before they are ready.
If he or any dev wants the fans to be chill, they should speak about it only when it's about to come out.
Never played a single one, so I'm not worried, as i use my Switch mainly for Metroidvanias and Horror games.
Good luck for them and for the fans who have to deal with this kinf of answers.
Bayonetta 3 missing 2021 is a blow, if that's what this means (which reading between the lines it certainly suggests).
Some scenarios to cheer us up though...
The fact they've come out and said something makes me think it's a positive scenario such as one of the above. If it was negative I honestly think they'd go radio silent, just like Retro Studios.
dont worry kamiya , my backlog is enough to make me forget most games that arent zelda/final fantasy
ah another development hell situation, best of luck to them
losers.
can't deliver
October this year confirmed
@MoonKnight7 Nintendo announced Bayonetta 3, not Platinum.
At this point, I'll probably forget to buy it when it finally comes out.
That's fine by me! I don't have the time to finish games I bought months ago, let alone anything new.
I stay wondering whether Platinum Games has development issues, or is Nintendo stalling them.
But I guess we'll eventually know way after it will be released.
@COVIDberry I'm not saying your one of these people, but he only says something when he is consistently pressured by people. If people leave him alone then in turn you will be left alone.
