Both sold well, I mean over 100k is great in japan. Both deserve it.
Hey, they were both great games so I’m not complaining. Both deserve their sales and popularity.
That's not really surprising imo. I don't think it means paper Mario was bad, I just think Ghosts appealed to more people.
Good performances by both the Sony and Nintendo new entries, I reckon come next weeks chart Paper Mario will be above Ghost in the charts though as it will have better legs.
Nice Switch numbers too.
Edit: Also Animal Crossing selling another 70 thousand, madness!
Ghost looks like a great game! Bet it deserves its no. 1 spot. But Paper Mario is really good too! I’m having a blast so far!
Paper Mario is fine. Ghost of Tsushima is a masterpiece. Very different games though so odd to compare them
I haven’t played the latest Paper Mario or any other title other than 1000 year door and a couple of the earlier titles, sadly.
This new one, while looking shiny and new didn’t look that impressive on its latest gameplay mechanics in the trailers provided and I miss the clever writing and innovations of old.
I’m curious to play Ghost as it seems like an open sandbox done properly and the references, art direction and executions (double puns, yay) look amazing and I’m eager to give them a go.
I’ll surely explore Origami King in the future but it seems the latter game mentioned seems a lot more fun and polished.
8 out of 10 being Switch games isn't half (or 80%) bad.
Awesome. Both are awesome games that deserve their praise and sales. Got Paper Mario TOK now, will get GoTsu later.
I find that PS4 games sell very well at launch, but then drop off the charts very quickly, but Switch games tend to stick around on the charts for longer, Paper Mario might sell more units than GoT in the long run.
Ghost of Tsushima is running into retail stock issues so its 2nd week drop will be harsh. Nevertheless, it's launch week was excellent, and it is on track to become the best-selling 1st party PS4 game of all time in Japan.
Paper Mario JP launch/lifetime sales:
> Paper Mario [N64]: 118,322 / ~426,000
> Thousand Year Door [GCN]: 137,750 / ~410,000
> Super Paper Mario [WII]: 156,055 / ~507,000
> Sticker Star [3DS]: 130,009 / ~565,000
> Color Spash [WIIU]: 28,436 / ~64,000
> The Origami King [NSW]: 109,092 / 109,092
Okay retail debut for The Origami King. Adding in digital sales should push its overall launch week sales to 130,000-150,000.
Paper Mario wasn't that bad, but Ghost of Tsushima is next level. The PS4 went out gloriously with this game and it definitely made up for how mixed I was on TLOU II
Nintendo Switch Lite sales dropped? Mario didn't debuted at number 1? Booho lubu Nintendoomed. /s
Given the Japanese history behind ghost of tsushima I'm not surprised it sold this well in Japan
These numbers are really good for switch games, i didn't expect them to be this good. Especially Mario kart 8 deluxe is crazy, considering this game released 6 years ago for the first time(base game i mean)
Wow color splash sold terribly. That is one I never purchased myself. In fact I haven’t bought a paper Mario since super, I just haven’t liked the changes to combat they’ve made. Origami king tho does interest me, I wish we had a demo.
@tanaka2687 lol exactly u can't really compare these games, it's a reach...
@status-204 Really?! Smh...
Really pleased to see Ghost sell so well, best game I've played all year(world immersion, combat system, story), and a nice break from the 150 hours I've put into animal crossing. Apparently it's completely sold out physically in Japan so it could have done even better. I do think once they have stock it will have legs, as the reviews in Japan have been great.
Ghost of Tsushima is freaking great
Ghost had a huge hype campaign for years. Paper Mario was just announced a month early. It’s impressive it’s even that high. And things being what they are, I would not be shocked to see Ghost drop abruptly while Mario continues to sell steadily for a month or two.
That’s not a bad number for paper Mario, it’s just Ghost of Tsushima was a huge game release.
Ghost of Tsushima is a fantastic game. Visually such a stunning game.Great combat and just a joy to be immersed in. It'll drop like a stone in the charts though due to stock shortages, but hopefully it does big numbers once that's addressed because Sucker Punch deserve it. Great send off for the ps4 too
@TYRANACLES
Color Splash suffered from very poor timing. It released in October of 2016, by that point, everyone was saving their money for the Switch.
Good numbers for Paper Mario and Switch hardware. Within a month or two, it looks like Switch(lite included) will have sold 15M in Japan alone, crazy.
Ghost is a great game, stunning world. Liking Origami King also.
Good, Ghost clearly was a game made with love. Origami King was a game made with restrictions and lack of direction.
Haven't played GoT yet! Was quite shocked at EDGE's review score for it though! (a 6) Or is it just EDGE being typical EDGE as per usual?
Paper Mario is a bit of a niche series of Mario. So this is still a good amount of sales for the game.
I'm having a blast with it. Completed the second streamer this evening. For me it will be somewhere between 9,6 and 9,7. Putting it in the top 4 of Switch games.
And that PS title, I haven't played it. And I'm slowly but surely moving away from PlayStation. I won't be buying the PS5, and I really liked the reveals for the XBOX Series X. (which I will be buying) So next gen, I'll be a Nintendo / MS gamer.
I bought them both day one and not really surprised.Paper Mario is great as expected but Ghost Of Tsushima is on another level!
Well deserved for Ghost of Tsushima because that game is a masterpiece. I'm enjoying Paper Mario too even though to me it still isn't better than Paper Mario (N64) or Thousand Year Door.
PS4 is sure going out with a bang with The Last of us part 2 & Ghost of Tsushima back to back!
Samurai games are becoming more popular nowadays especially in the modern era now as evidence by Samurai Warriors, Soul Calibur II, Muramasa, Samurai Shodown, Sekiro, and Ghost of Tsushima. If only Nintendo stop being stubborn and actually make a triple a version of their own (like a realistic take on The Marasame Castle with Takamaru) it would be as amazing too. Heck they had like 5 samurai style characters they could easily make a game out of (Samurai Goroh, Takamaru, Kat and Ana, the Sakura Samurai), kinda sad they didn't do anything with any of them.
I can't believe that I almost didn't buy Paper Mario The Origami King because of all the negitivity surrounding the game on the internet. It's an amazing, wonderful game and leaves Sticker Star for dead.
Bloody internet! This game does not deserve the negitivity it is getting.
I'm not aiming this at the Nintendolife community, on some other sites though, people are strait up bashing this game without having even played it.
Had a feeling Ghost of Tsushima would top the charts, it's had rave reviews...I'm still wondering why Microsoft are even considering launching their next consoles in Japan. It looks like they're only selling to Americans and Brits living over there. All the power in the world yet Japan doesn't care.
Lol. To compare these two is disrespectful to ghosts
Well I bought Ghost and I passed on Paper Mario. Ghost is just a far more appealing title IMO, Paper Mario just didn't do anything for me.
@TheFullAndy,
There are still Switch console shortages in Japan, so no wonder when people do manage to get a console one of their initial purchases will be the new Animal crossing game.
@WiltonRoots,
True, at this point even the Sony Ps5 will struggle a little in Japan, as mobile gaming is far more popular, and to be honest both Sony and Microsoft's main market is the west, but at this point there is nothing to be gained by Microsoft even bothering to spend any money marketing their console to Japan, they should just put all their resources into the western markets.
@Mgene15,
Or totally stupid, both are very different games, it would be like comparing "little big planet" to "ghosts", and to say "disrespectful to ghosts", is simply not true, both are good games in their own arena.
@TheFrenchiestFry,
To call Ghosts the next level is pushing it a bit, very pretty game from a tech level, but quite generic outside that, the PS5 has far better games than this.
@fadedcolors lol western AAA aren't made with love. They are made by an army of hundreds slaves who don't have any creative freedom. There is nothing original in the game design of Ghost of Tsushima, just big money development that bought its success.
Ghost makes Paper Mario look like a cheap mobile game you can download for free.
You can't compare these two.
If only they had given a compelling and entertaining combat system to the game...
This is why I love Sony and Nintendo. Both of the companies IP's sell incredibly well and both always have the best consoles for the best games!!!!
@glaemay Have you played it?
Well done to both games, but hopefully it might get Nintendo in house studios releasing something massive for the end of this year.
@Razer,
Course it does, and almost everything else on the Ps4 makes Ghosts look very generic outside of it's bland boring open world.
@johnvboy so by agreeing with me that Ghost makes Paper Mario look like a free mobile game, then going on to say every other game on the PS4 looks better than Ghost.
Well that just further diminishes Paper Mario, not that the game needs it.
But yeah sure I certainly can agree with you 😂
@Razer,
Both games are not perfect I will give you that, at the moment Mario is 81% on metacritic while ghosts is scoring at 80%.
But feel free to keep up all your negative comments and trolling fella, gives me something to do.
I have a suspecion that Origami King was originally built with the JoyCon in mind, what with the whole extendable arms thing, and the rotating battlefield segments.
AND I am further suspecting this to be only the first of a number of games that will see delay and reconfiguration, as to no longer rely on the JoyCon. An executive decision made after the massive success off the Switch Lite this past holiday season, I furtherally suspectests.
AND AND, if you ask me, that's just TOO. MUCH. MAN.
Penn & Teller would likely apply an even stronger wording.
@PretendWorking,
It was at 80 when I posted my comment, it could of course go up or down from that point as could Paper Mario, still both games far from perfect.
@PretendWorking,
I got it from the site, so who knows could have been wrong, pretty sure it was 80, but does it make all that much difference either way?.
@fadedcolors Yes. Please name one original game design idea this game contains that prove it has been made by an actual game designer and not by business suits using an algorithm.
@johnvboy sorry for the late reply to your silly and incorrect comment. Been so busy at work this week.
It does make a difference because it proves I wasn't trolling and actually you were trolling because you were simply incorrect and only sided against what I said for the sake of it, despite me being correct.
Which makes you a troll.
@Razer,
Come on fella, your are very negative on most threads, and on this one there was no need to declare the new paper Mario game as a free mobile game, then at the same time to suggest the swan song on the Ps4 is an awesome game, when in fact all it's tech aside is a very generic game with vert few new ideas, not that this was my real issue as much as your drive by comment designed to rile up Nintendo fans.
So you are not convincing me in anyway that you are not a troll.
