One game we're looking forward to trying out later this month is Mojang's new title, Minecraft Dungeons.
Although it's taken a lot of design cues from classic ARPG dungeon crawlers, the game's director Måns Olson recently shed some light on the beginnings of the project in an interview with USgamer. It turns out the game was inspired by the dungeon-crawling elements of The Legend of Zelda and the Dark Souls series.
Olsen admits the final product moved away from this and is now closer in terms of gameplay to titles such as Diablo, Torchlight, and cooperative experiences like Left 4 Dead:
not as much of that has made it through into the game as it is today...If you look at inspirations now, it's closer in terms of gameplay to games like Diablo, Torchlight, and Gauntlet. And also the cooperative experience is pulling a lot from modern first-person shooter cooperative games like Left 4 Dead and [Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide].
Despite the co-op elements drawing inspiration from games like Left 4 Dead and Warhammer: End Time - Vermintide, Mojang has previously confirmed that players won't be able to team up with randoms online, as there's no online matchmaking. You'll be able to connect exclusively with your friends online, and that's all.
In the same interview, Olsen also noted how the project was originally considered for the 3DS before the team decided it wanted to release the game on multiple platforms:
It started as a small single-player game, smaller in scope, and as we started prototyping we realized it would be fun to play multiplayer. Originally this was considered as a 3DS game, but then we realized we wanted to have it on the Switch, PlayStation, Xbox Game Pass, and Windows.
Minecraft Dungeons releases on the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms on 26th May. Will you be trying it out? Leave a comment down below.

I personally rather only hook up with friends anyways. Looks like a Minecraft I can get into with the kids maybe. Not a fan of regular Minecraft.
I've updated the article to reflect this.
They have still yet to mention the price (and don 't tell me it will be the same as PS or XBox cause Switch tax will make sure THAT won't happen...
@SyFyTy
All of Microsoft Game Studio's past releases have cost the same price on both Xbox and Switch, no reason why that'd be any different for this one.
Had Nintendo made online matching like this, the whole world would be whining none stop. But since it's Microsoft, gamers will ignore it.
Looks great and I’d probably buy it except no online multiplayer makes it a pass unfortunately. 😤
Why can't Nintendo let the 3DS die now in terms of games? There hasn't been a game in the States since like March, and there's really no big titles coming, like a remake of the older Mario titles. Europe is scheduled for a game later this month apparently, and possibly followed by a North American release later. But come on, the 3DS has had it's time in the spotlight, please focus more on the Switch.
@KingBowser Who's still focusing on 3DS? This game is coming to Switch, but was originally planned for 3DS
@Fandabidozi On Minecraft.net it says you can play both locally and via internet?
@Jeronan But unfortunately no online matchmaking
Like Diablo? Really? So boring?
Thats cool. I'd get it for the 3ds.
Must have been working on it for a long time if the 3DS was a consideration.
Yeah, a 3DS one would’ve felt cheap. I think they made the right call with using the Switch instead(sorry to all you who wanted to play Minecraft: Dungeons on 3DS).
I like it when people are triggered by reading “3DS”, and it causes them to immediately stop reading (even the remainder of the sentence) to hit the comments section.
This is pretty old news but would have been cool to have it on 3DS with stereoscopic 3D... but this would never have happened anyway due to minuscule power of the device. Actually is making me nostalgic about my 3DS, so much love for that thing.
Anyway the kicker here is that the physical retail versions all appear to be close to £40. So I’ll be going digital. Another kicker is that the Switch version runs at 30fps and low resolution / feeble lighting, compared to the other versions. Obviously not an issue if Switch is your only console but for hectic ARPGs it’s 60fps or bust for me (Diablo 3 is a godsend of a port). It’s also 4K/60fps on the X1 and PS4Pro, which has swayed my decision.
In any case, super hyped.
Shame they didn't go more the Zelda route rather than the Diablo route.
@Liam_Doolan Are we sure this game is coming to the Switch May 26th, b/c Nintendo has 60 dated games for May and 10 for June on their webpage before listing Minecraft Dungeons:
https://www.nintendo.com/games/coming-soon/
which only says "Spring".
https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/minecraft-dungeons-switch/
Maybe digital is coming later on Switch? It's only 3 weeks away, why not date it? A price would be nice too.
Only Windows and Xbox One versions can be pre-ordered, PS4 and Switch can't.

@rjejr Minecrafts official site states May 26. Could be just digital.
https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-dungeons-nintendo-switch
@mesome713 That's what their website says NOW, but Nintendo's site - the company who runs the Switch eShop, says "Spring". Wouldn't be the first time Switch got a game later than other consoles and PC.
I looked all over, can't find it physical, so it does look like digital only right now too. $20 isn't too bad to give it a shot, maybe $30, I need to look into Hero more. thx
@rjejr Here's the official announcement that was made at the start of last month. As @mesome713 says, it's 26th May.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/04/minecraft_dungeons_launches_on_the_nintendo_switch_next_month
This date covers the digital release across all platforms, I'm not sure about the physical version.
As for Nintendo's website, my guess is the listing hasn't been updated yet. The game has already been delayed by Mojang / Microsoft (across all platforms), so it would be unfortunate if it happened again.
It looks great and I'm optimistic about it. Given that it'll be available on Xbox Game Pass on PC day one, I may get it, depending on the price, performance and reviews.
@KingBowser What are you on about?! Nintendo has moved all their resources to the Switch. The last game they released for it was Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn in March 2019. Even then, that was just a port. If we don't count Yo-kai Watch 3 and Busters because they released years prior in Japan, the last brand new game Nintendo released for it was WarioWare Gold in July 2018. Believe me, Nintendo has moved away from the 3DS.
No online sorta kills it for me. Especially in this lockdown.
Price is right here in the official FAQ: https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360041345271-Minecraft-Dungeons-FAQ
$19.99 USD for the standard edition. No mention of platform-specific price, so we can assume it'll be the same.
Wow, it would have seriously stood out on 3ds. There are a few good titles, but 3ds was starved in that genre. Feel free remind me of others, but off top of my head I can only think of a few Diablo-ish genre 3ds games. There's the decent but incredibly short (for an RPG) "heroes of ruin" which was a blatent Diablo clone. Then there's "Fantasy Life" which is excellent and is like Diablo+animal crossing, it's quite long, has lots to do and lots of stuff to fight. Has all the weapons, armor, items as well as crafting. Fantasy Life has wide variety of content and is great for kids and adults, def one of 3ds best. But that's really the only competition "Minecraft dungeons" wldve had on 3ds. Ther may b one or two others I'm forgetting, but still not many on 3ds
I like the Gauntlet vibe, absolutely considering this.
@Fandabidozi there's online multiplayer, just not with randos.
Yeah, where is our digital preorder? The Australia store(on the switch) doesn’t even have the game listed at all! I went with a physical copy because I didn’t want to risk missing the first shipment of the game!
