Minecraft Dungeons arrives on the Switch and multiple other platforms next month. It's inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and allows you to fight hordes of nasty mobs by yourself, or team up with three other players online or locally. According to the game's official FAQ, though, you won't be able to form a party with a random group of players online.
WILL THERE BE ONLINE MATCHMAKING?
No. Minecraft Dungeons is designed to be played together with your friends – either on a comfy couch or in a comfy online session.
Your online friends will also have to be playing the game on the same system, as the FAQ further states how cross-platform multiplayer won't be available at launch. The good news is the developer is "looking forward" to enabling cross-platform play for free, in a future update. Here's hoping it also considers adding in online matchmaking in an update later down the line.
Will you still be trying out this game on release now that you know all of this? Leave a comment down below.

that's like the opposite of splatoon
@Aurumonado ...and Jedi Academy. Personally I prefer being able to pair up with randoms over only friends, it's hard to coordinate that and only so many buddies are into the same game at the same time.
There goes my purchase. I was really looking forward to this.
People were talking about this on reddit as well. I personally don't see the problem with it, as you can play by yourself just fine, you don't need a full party. And Minecraft's audience includes kids, so having them play with randoms online without voice chat isn't smart, and I feel like this game would be hard to play without voice chat, with people running off doing their own thing instead of helping.
Honestly, I think I am perfectly alright with this. Most dungeon crawls have been near-exclusively with friends.
Last time I rando'd one, Nine Parchments, I got... Stress.
Meh wasn't too interested before and this doesn't change that. While some like playing with random people, I see that they have our best interests at heart. It's to protect kids and stuff so I approve of it.
Considering people are even awful in Animal Crossing, I'm fine with this. Only want to play with friends anyway.
@MasterJay Diablo 3 and Torchlight are fine without voice chat. Most people know what is expected while playing, and if they don't they'll either catch up or have fun on their own - splitting the party generally doesn't negatively impact gameplay unless you are advancing the story through a cut scene or boss fight.
Though I agree that kids playing online with randoms is not a good idea, but this is what parental controls are intended for. I would like to think that all parents actually monitor what their young kids are doing in games; however, I know that's not true, but at least I'm doing my part.
I personally don’t mind since I would likely play solo anyway, but it would be nice to at least have the option to play with others via online matchmaking. Still interested as dungeon crawlers/looters are my jam, but I’ll be waiting for reviews before pulling the trigger.
I can see it from others perspective but for me this is perfect couch co-op with my wife and son. Have got it pre installed on my Xbox one though so no switch version for me this time.
Don’t care a bit about online match making but cross-platform play would be fantastic. I have some Xbox friends I’d like to team up with.
Looks like I'm waiting until cross-play releases
I should certainly hope it doesn’t let you team up with randoms. The whole idea of Minecraft online is spending time with friends, not getting annoyed with random people who won’t help you.
I do understand, though that this is a disappointment for some and I can see why, meeting new people online can be fun especially if none of your friends are able to join you
Would like crossplay though
But i dont have any friends.
@JokerCK same.
@JokerCK yep same i have the beta on PC playing at the moment and it's lonely playing playing solo
Minecraft is smart, now let's see if they can survive the negative nannies. Which of course they can, they are Minecraft.
This isn’t much of a problem for me with traditional Minecraft as it’s such a personalized experience but to have a friend’s only dungeon crawler seems insulting to me.
so now we're making games less fun for adults in order to keep children safe? children who don't buy the consoles or the games, children who don't know how to use "parental controls" which could prevent children's User accounts from playing with randoms from the game settings or console settings and be applied to EVERY game
@brandonbwii
Same. Ah well, plenty of other games out there.
Crossplay will be patched in later... Switch owners who were stuck playing solo will end up joining high level PC teams & farming exp & loot from their, "team efforts".
@JayJ Especially on a system like Switch where can’t instantly message others online, adding to the frustration of not having many friends in the first place. 😔
That is just trash then. This game is only for the emo people who doesn't care about having friends and wants to stay single.
Well, this is backwards.
Usually, it's the opposite way around.
So, does that you can't play with random players at all, or is it that you can't form a "group" with random players? 🤔
Do we know if we need a Nintendo online membership to play online?
