As we all know, DOOM Eternal on the Switch will not be launched on 20th March alongside the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC version. The port specialist at Panic Button needs more time to refine it and id Software's Marty Statton has reassured DOOM fans waiting for the game to arrive on this particular platform that it won't be a "huge" delay.
Now, speaking to US Gamer at PAX East this weekend, Stratton says the port is progressing at a steady pace and while a release date hasn't been discussed yet, he did say how he was "stunned" when he tried it out a week ago:
We really haven't talked about dates or anything—I can say that I played it about a week ago, and I am stunned. Our partner on that, Panic Button, I've referred to them many times as masters of the platform, and they're proving it again. I really think it's gonna surprise people[...] I see it all the time in the comments, when we release a video: 'Can't wait to play it on Switch, can't wait to play it on Switch.' I think people are going to love it.
Statton reiterated his comments from the previous month, saying how the development team "want to do the right job with it" in order for it to be the "highest quality" possible. Visuals and performance aren't the only focus, either – with Panic Button calling on "a whole team of UI artists" to ensure the game works on the small screen;
Menus, UI, the dossier—a lot of adjustments across the board to make sure that, again, it is the best possible version you can get on the Switch.
How do you feel about having to wait longer for the release of DOOM Eternal on Switch? Do you think it'll be worth the wait? Share your thoughts below.

I will be playing FF7 remake so I can wait. Would rather it be the best it can be. As I am currently enjoying WITCHER 3 on Switch and am blown away, I cant wait to see if Panic Button can really pull this off. It looks so crazy on PS4!!
Release a video of it running on the Switch already. It cracks me up that these devs can talk about it but we don't get anything till sometimes release day.
Yup, I have a feeling this will be yet another Switch port that people deemed impossible but looks solid. Hopefully it'll indeed be a Q2 release.
I definetly want to get it, crap I need to get the first one lol. Eventually I will get it and then this one when it comes out, I am amazed at the talent of Panic Button and am thankful they are taking up the challenge.
With the amount of love and care these guys put into porting, I can assuredly wait and will gladly give them my money. Hell i preferred to play Doom 2016 and Wolf on my Switch over PS4. They did such a good job!
I trust in Panic Button that this will be a fantastic original version of Doom Eternal.
Itll be the ugliest version of it, but it will be my most played version.
I will not be picking it up the Switch. Actually, I won't be playing Doom Eternal for awhile. I still need to finish the previous Doom, as I barely played it. When the time comes, I will buy Doom Eternal on PC for that high performance. I do however appreciate Panic Button's effort to bring such demanding games onto inferior platforms.
So it'll be an 8 gig card with three quarters as a download right?
But will we collectors love the cartridge?
@Michaelrojelio84 the first is currently on sale digitally on Switch! I have put in over a hundred hours on Switch, I am so excited for Eternal and this news is encouraging.
We should be eternally grateful for people like Panic Button.
When has a publisher actually said “Switch port is running at 500p and sub 30fps... people going to hate it” 😜
Got the PC pre-order for $37. Wait longer and Pay more for what is guaranteed to be the water down version makes no sense. I’ll just play something else on the GO.
At the minute I’m waiting. Sure it’ll look better on other systems I’ve got but, you know, I’m 43, graphics aren’t the be all and end all. Being able to do some therapeutic ripping and tearing on a night shift is a must have.
would like to see some screenshots and video footage of the Switch version if it's so stunning
one of my biggest issues with the doom 2016 port is that the text was so small on the switch. glad they’re putting in effort to fix that.
The only way I am going to love it is if we get a good physical version with the entire game on it and it's a great doom experience without any online requirements. Online requirements always feel like a no-deal for me on a handheld, I need the game to be great offline as well.
Sounds like Panic Button at their wizardry again... I'm hopeful this will will turn out great. Would just like to see some footage and have a release date now...
As much as I love Nintendo Switch, this game needs to played in its full glory first, with maxed out visuals and proper sound, on big enough 4K screen. Whatever he says we all know Doom Eternal won't look as pleasing on Switch mediocre LCD screen. After that though you're welcome to double dip and have it on the go
@SpookyPotato I don’t know man, look at both Metro games.
They should have given this project to Saber Interactive, they did a significantly better job (with the latest Witcher 3 patch) then Panic Button ever did. Both devs made ports with blurry graphics and low texture graphics but Saber did not stop working on optimization and release a patch where the graphics are less blurry and can be considered acceptable. PB on the other hand did not do this and all their great ports are barely playable due to the blurry graphics.
@Agramonte happy for you. Poor schmucks like myself will have to make do with the Switch version, be happy for us, eh? I guarantee I had at least as much fun with DOOM 2016 on Switch as you did on whatever machine you raided Hell on.
@TIND I managed to barely play DOOM on Switch for over one hundred hours, multiple play throughs.
Can't wait to play this on switch!
It’s been a preorder for me since they announced it was coming to switch and it appeared as a pre order in Game.co.uk, based on Panic Buttons track record.
Panic Button can take all the time it needs for them to be happy to put their name to it.
by the time it does come on Switch I'll already have played it on PS4. IF not I'll wait for it to go on sale. I don't know why they couldn't have got it done on the actual launch day. Dark Souls all over again.
@TIND You make it sound as if it was unplayable yet myself and many others here played through the game multiple times and loved it. And I cannot wait for Eternal!
Has anyone said I'll play it somewhere else cheaper and bet....oh too late.
@TIND
Slight flaw in that argument being that DOOM, Wolfenstein 2 and Rocket League on Switch were brilliant, and improved with patches
@SquirrelsCanFly
“ After that though you're welcome to double dip and have it on the go”
I think you may find people are welcome to but whichever version they choose 😃
Well I hope it won't be like Doom 3 on any platform.
I hope this time I can play Nightmare mode without heavy framedrops the 2016 game has on Switch (the lower the difficulty, the more stable the framerate was)
I would have loved it alot more if Switch owner's got the same release date. That's okay though Switch is the best console available so additional time is needed.
Panic Button, we trust you, but after what Saber did with Witcher 3, you have to do it a bit better this time. At least, make the game less blurry lol
Well yes, he would say that wouldn't he.
Already played DOOM on PS4 and few months later played on Switch. The portability factor is important and the port was great but it’s not the same. I’ll probably buy the PS4 version only.
Day one for me.
Possibly saving gameplay footage and release date for this illusive direct.
@TIND I played both Doom and Wolfenstein and wasn’t bothered at all by the graphics. To call them barely playable is being extremely hyperbolic.
since the port is being developed alongside the full game rather than afterwords i'm confident it might run better than doom 2016
Wish it came out at the same time but I'm super cool to wait. Almost done playing through Doom 2016 again on Switch in preparation.
I thought the Switch port was great and honestly cant ever tell the differences between versions. And besides, other versions dont have gyro support like the Switch which automatically disqualifies them in my book.
@Michaelrojelio84 I believe the first Doom is massively discounted on the eshop right now.
"hihelloitsmeMon 13th Jan 2020
My One X awaits.
I wouldn't hold my breath for the switch version. It's still plausible it doesn't release at all, given the hardware limitations. At best it would be a severely gimped version, way more so than the DOOM 2016 port."
👆
@Agramonte yes that’s what feel like also. Pc is the way to go for this type of game
@SquareOneMJ but you can’t be poor if you can afford switch games.
It’ll be great on switch. Personally I’m getting it for pc just because of controls and performance graphics etc
I won’t be getting this until on sale. I’ve still got to finish the Witcher and just didn’t get far in Doom. I’ve got to adjust to the play style of doom too. I’m used to the old FPS approach of taking your time and trying to stay alive
As long as they don't pull a Bandai Namco and delay it until the end of the year, then I'm still going to get it for my Switch.
If they can do a Witcher 3 type upgrade this will change the game play and details to how one can see objects and details.
@Agramonte I agree. While the ports are miraculous considering Switch is a lower powered portable, if you have another console, there is not much appeal- specially with this significant price hike.
Seeing Doom on store shelves at $60 for Switch and $10 for PS4 was the reason I got a PS4. I ended up getting Doom 2016 for free on PSplus. With the choice between Doom Eternal on Switch or PS4, I'd like it portable but not as much as an extra $50 in my pocket. I hope there is more parity in the price this time.
After playing Doom 3 BFG on Switch I trust Panic Button more than any other third party porter for Switch games.
@Nicholas64 I get that Panic Button do a great job, but you'd base your judgement on a port of a 2005 game, versus Saber Porting a current gen, massively open world game like Witcher 3 as criteria for best 3rd Part Port Specialist?
@Savino yeah... great way to play!
But I waited almost 4 years for this. I want it as nice and fluid as possible. Also not really a handheld game for me - I'll play something else in bed.
I am very happy Bethesda and Nintendo suddenly have such a tight-knit relationship. While I'm slightly disappointed we likely won't get any higher-end Fallout or Elder Scrolls title that is FO4+ or ES6+, it's nice to see older ES and Doom games on it, as well as the newer Wolfenstein games. The Evil Within and Fallout in any capacity would be nice for the Switch.
I'm starting to suspect a deliberate delay of the Switch version, to avoid less-than-optimal screenshots entering circulation at the time of the grand launch. But what do I know.
Either way, looking forward to seeing what the Switch version looks like!
I'm glad they're taking the port seriously, but I don't imagine it'll be a full 60FPS given that Doom 4 ran at 30. That's not bad, in fact it's super understandable, but if this is anything like Doom 4 then that frame rate is going to make a pretty huge difference. I'll probably be waiting a few months for a sale on PS4. I love playing games on my Switch, but I'm not sure portability beats frames in this case.
@SquareOneMJ I would not consider the gamers who can blindly pay extra for games on Switch "poor"
Even non-poor schmucks like myself cant justify a 50% mark-up just to play a game on the bus. At some point it just not worth it.
The only thing I'd really want is 60 fps. I picked up the first one and it's alright and maybe it's been patched since, but that 30 fps frame rate really bothered me. Maybe I didn't take enough time to get used to it, but, I still think 60fps (and Splatoon like motion controls) would be the most beneficial rather than resolution or pretty graphics. Or at least it's nice to have the option.
As long as it doesn't launch so late that its $60 while the other platforms' copies are $20, then I'll be fine. I wouldn't buy it same day as AC anyway
@Agramonte ‘Wait longer and Pay more for what is guaranteed to be the water down version makes no sense. I’ll just play something else on the GO.’ Just seems like you’re sneering at or trying to run down what will be my only choice if I want to play DOOM Eternal, almost mocking. I’m not blindly paying extra, (your words), Switch DOOM Eternal will be my only choice and if they do a good job they’ll deserve and get my money. Like I said previously, I can guarantee you didn’t have any more fun playing DOOM than I did, and if Eternal is up to the same standard I’ll have at least as much fun again.
@vio that dude has a ridiculous track record when it comes to predictions, going back to his gatorboi days... He’d probably get completely cleaned out in Las Vegas.
@SquareOneMJ I see it a bit like if you have a comfy car, it gets you from A to B and you’re perfectly happy with it, you love it, the family love it, then you get that clown pull up at the lights in the flash car that thinks they’re better than you.
@gamering Not just small, but the text was really blurry. I hope this version really does fix that
@FTPinkRabbit I have an Xbox One, and I personally want it on Switch instead because of motion controls, not portability. I just can't enjoy shooters with sticks anymore. The ability to quickly suspend and resume indefinitely is a nice bonus too, helps when you have 15-30 minute breaks to play.
@invictus4000. Thanks I will check it out but then I need to get a new sd card lol
@SquareOneMJ. Thanks I will look into it and I just told another if I do get it digitally then I will need a new sd card lol. The 128gb has lasted me awhile but I do need to get at least a 256gb or above so I can get more digital games. Thanks again
@nab1 Oh yeah, Doom would be super fun with Splatoon-quality motion controls. I dunno if they could make it that good, but if they did it would definitely be a selling point. It just wouldn't be enough to cancel out the 30fps framerate for me. Doom is a game that really needs to feel as smooth as possible to work the way it does, at least for me.
Whether it's worth the wait or not will come down to one's own individual views on "The Switch Tax" / "The Switch Sacrifice", and how strongly they feel the way they feel.
To someone who tends to eschew the "Tax", of course they're not gonna even consider the Switch version. And that's understandable. People who are fairly neutral, or even perhaps softly favorable to the "Tax" are probably not going to be that likely to wait either if they have another platform on hand. The "true believers" though, will very, VERY likely be just fine to wait. To them, the freedom and flexibility trumps all, and makes it well worth the wait!
So, it all comes down to that, really.
As for me, with a PS4 Pro, XB1X, and a gaming PC that can just edge out XB1X in real-world performance, and as one who just got paid today, I could totally just go out and buy it right now, and would be lying if I said I wasn't super tempted to do just that. But my plan, at least, as one who is generally very strongly favorable of the "Tax" is to wait out the Switch version, play it there first with the freedom and flexibility. Play it big screen as much as I'm able to get away with, play it small screen the rest of the time (and probably the majority of the time), and then after I've finished it, jump on the first Steam sale and play it a second time with the visuals cranked to the limits my poor i5 7600K / GTX1070 will let me get away with, and feel like I'm playing it again for the very first time....
.... that's how I roll, gang....
...but I could also see myself maybe caving just this once. Not only because, c'mon, it's DOOM, but also because I ABSOLUTELY ADORE this whole "Doomimal Crossternal" thing, and I DID buy AC! Because of the singularly wacky and heartwarming tie-in binding the two, there is a total magic to having both together on launch day that normally wouldn't be quite so compelling to me.
So, I think if I can just last out the day, then I think I could probably make it the rest of the way to Switch day without a ton of trouble..... reasonable minority chance that I don't hit the pillow before I hit the purchase button on Steam, though! 😂
I guess we'll find out!
Cheers!
I'll believe it when I see it honestly. The Doom 2016 port was borderline unenjoyable, had horribly compressed sound, horrible frame pacing, horrible framerates, etc. They can tease us all they want but I am absolutely not going to believe them until I see gameplay. Panic button is really overrated, Saber Interactive has done a much better job with stuff like the Witcher 3 and Crysis remastered ports.
