As you might recall, last year DOOM Eternal got delayed. The reason behind it was to ensure id Software and Bethesda could deliver "the best experience" possible. The Switch version was, unfortunately, hit the hardest at the time, and the developer said it would announce a release date for this particular platform in the future.
While we still don't have a release date for the Nintendo iteration, in a recent interview, id Software's Marty Stratton spoke about how the Switch release required more time, in order for the port specialist at Panic Button to refine it. Here's exactly what he said:
It’s coming out a bit later than the game is on current consoles and PC, and really that’s just because we want to finish the game on those platforms and then give Panic Button – our partner on it – the time they need to really pull those refinements into the Switch version. It’s not going to be a huge delay, but we haven’t announced the launch time frame yet, but they are fantastic partners. They are masters of that platform.
As noted, it's not expected to be a "huge" delay. Stratton went onto reassure fans of DOOM that the new game on Switch would deliver:
I played through the games so many times, but playing through on the Switch all the way from beginning to end was one of my favorite experiences. To have it handheld and mobile was phenomenal. I think that’s what we’re going to deliver with Doom Eternal in all the same ways that Doom is fantastic on the current-gen platforms… we are very uncompromising in bringing it to Switch, and Panic Button is really on a great path.

Take your time, the gamers want a good product, not something rushed.
They did great with Doom, Wolf, and everything they’ve touched so far. I’m completely content in waiting for a proper product instead of something rushed and buggy/laggy. Not to mention, backlog.
Super excited for Doom Eternal. The 15 min gameplay released today got me even more pumped. I hope it performs as good, if not better than 2016 Doom did on the Switch
@Kalmaro I agree. That being said, the delay announcement last year was a gut punch. It was the only game I was looking forward to last year, and to have them also break their "day and date" promise for the Switch release was salt in the wound.
Its fine, we have Animal Crossing Switch to hold us over
It's good to know we won't be waiting too long. Going by the recent previews, the game is incredible.
I'll be buying it day one, whenever that may be along with Doom 64 and the first thing I'm going to do is go to the 'All Games' section and arrange Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3,Doom 64, Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal into a row and marvel at it. I'll probably take a screenshot too and make a rare Twitter post.
I know 64 should sit between 2 and 3 but 1/2/3/64 will look better.
Just had a thought ,once 64 and Eternal release, there will be more Doom games on Switch (6) than EA's five.Technically 4 because FIFA 20. More Doom than EA, that's fine by me.
@Thaliard I hate delays too. That said, I'll always support a developer that's honest and admits that they want to take more time to make the game more worth my money. That's the kind of fan-service I can get behind.
It's great that they want to give us a quality port. No rush, I really want to play this game, but patience is a virtue. I really wouldn't be interested in this if there wasn't a Switch version tbh.
I guess it's understandable that Panic Button needs more time for this port since Doom Eternal is running on the id tech 7 engine while Doom (2016) ran on id tech 6.
A small price to pay for a portable rip and tear session.
Doooooooooooooood!
Within reason a delayed game is better than a bad port.
After the Bloodstained fiasco, I'd take multiple delays over a botched and rushed release.
And panic button already have enough experience thanks to multiple major releases on the Switch, so if they need time, they can have it.
I don't care how long they delay it, as long as they did a good job that's how I want it. Still Bethesda needs to give us Doom 64 same day as the other platforms.
I PreOrdered but wait for stable release before wanting it.
Yet another reason why id's my favorite western dev studio... when they do something, they make sure to do it right.
I will get it on my ps4 pro anyway.
These are the games I am not willing to play downgraded.
If they need time to make a great port, then give them time... Panic Button have given me hope when I hear port... they are slowly washing away the bad taste I have from the PC port of Arkham Knight...
if panic button is saying the delay wont be long i expect doom eternal for switch be released around middle summer time crosses fingers besides these guys know how to get things done.
A good game is a good game, power is irrelevant. Gamers will agree, hobbyists will argue.
I'll be getting this for my PS4 Pro at launch for the full 60fps experience on the TV but will probably pick up the Switch version down the line at some point as I did its predecessor. I'll be interested to see how the Switch version performs as the first struggles when the action gets too intense, especially on harder difficulties. At the moment I have all the Doom games on both consoles and suspect by the end of the year that'll still be the case
@carlos82 2016 doom for switch was directly ported from the pc version reason why it look alittle off but this time panic button is building switch version of doom eternal from the ground up which will look alot better then the first one.
Can’t wait for this on Switch, so excited.
As long as it's no more than half a year, we'll be fine. I expect a release date by September.
We can trust Panic Button, but this seems to be a fairly tough port to make. It's a very ambitious project.
Nintendo and patience go hand n hand
If it is worth the wait.
IF...
I found DOOM 2016 perfectly playable despite its short coming and enjoyed it immensely. Plus I could dump some demons and play DOOM at the same time! Take your time Panic Button ye ol’ Masters of Switch Ports.
Or they need to refine it for the Switch pro??.
@arnoldlayne83 Yes, I'll be playing it on my ps4 too as I don't want to compromise on a rocksteady 60 fps.
@arnoldlayne83 get pc version then. Instead of downgraded PS4 version
@Nintyfan normally I would say yes but have you played doom 2016 on switch and pc? Cos 🤯 night and day difference
It will be worth the wait.
@OorWullie
How do you arrange a row of games on switch ??
I'm honestly fine with this since I was planning on getting both a Switch and PS4 copy. This will space them out for me. Otherwise I'd probably get them both at the same time and then (knowing me) I'd probably try to play through both at the same time which would get repetitive.
Seriously looking forward to this. In Panic Button I trust!!!
@SenseiDje By opening a game,closing it and then opening the next one..... It's annoying though, we should be able to drag and drop tiles to where we want them.
@OorWullie
😀 ok ! I know this ! This almost looks like a joke , in 2020!
"won't be a huge delay" sure whatever
Not too sad about the delay considering the trash port of Doom...yes its playable but looks horrible....
@Kalmaro A delayed game is eventually good. A rushed game is bad forever.
Shigeru Miyamoto
@sandman89 have no rig.
If it is like Doom 2016, ps4 pro is decent enough to run it at steady fps and good enough resolution.
@arnoldlayne83 🤞
It’d be amazing if the delay was to coincide with a switch pro release, I can but dream.
Maybe it's just me, but I wish developers and publishers would cease excluding the Nintendo Switch when saying "current gen" consoles. It released after PS4 and Xbox One. It's current. It's not last gen.
@Paulie1up The specs aren't current gen.
To make it portable and even more so for a low price Nintendo released a console that isn't as powerful as current gen systems. I love the switch, but the faster they can get a device out at least as powerful as a base PS4 the better.
@OorWullie I'm going to do the same!!! Look at me with all my 'Dooms'!!!!! 🙃
I rather have a delayed release if it means we won't have or need a performance patch months later. Let's hope the release version is final enough.

@StevenG I get the point you're making regarding the specs, and I fully understand what Nintendo set out to achieve with the Switch. I think we have a semantic dispute here. I consider the console to be current generation due to when it was released, similarly to how Wikipedia describes the eighth generation of consoles here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighth_generation_of_video_game_consoles
I just think there must be a better way for developers and publishers to differentiate between the Switch and the two more technologically advanced consoles (e.g. PS4 and Xbox One) than referring to them as "the current consoles" and excluding Switch. I stand by my original comment that the Switch is a current console.
They need to fix the dead zone issue.
Theyve done really good work with the port of Doom 2016, but it sucks to still have that issue on the game, and if it transfers over to Doom Eternal then it's really going to kill the enjoyment of that version.
If there is a Switch Pro, I hope they can update these to take advantage of the increased power.
I trust panic button. I have doom 2016 on switch and will have this on switch too.
@Richnj What is the "dead zone" issue? confused I've played a lot of Doom 2016 on my Switch and it is great.
@vio I've played Doom on Xbox, PS and Switch, and the Switch version (the Pro pad specifically) has a huge deadzone in comparison. It's not a hardware issue. The pad is capable of precise movements like th xbox pad and dualshock4. Other games on Switch, like Fortnite and The Witcher have no noticeable deadzone.
For a shooter, especially one as fast as Doom, a huge deadzone is a big issue.
Note: just in case you aren't aware what a deadzone is. A deadzone is the area around the stick where movement is not registered. The bigger the deadzone, the more you can move the stick with zero movement on screen. Most games have some deadzone to prevent stick drift. The best games incorporate options to edit your deadzone, like dead Island and Halo MCC. Ultimately, a deadzone that is too large results in loss of accuracy and minute cursor control for precision aiming.
