Switch owners might not be getting their hands on DOOM Eternal later this month, but they'll at least be able to relive the hellish Nintendo 64 title DOOM 64 for just $4.99 / £3.99 (or the regional equivalent). If the game itself wasn't already enough, Nightdive Studios – the talented team behind this port – have revealed the re-release will also come with an entirely new chapter, during an interview with our friends at US Gamer.
Here's exactly what senior developer James Haley had to say:
On our end, persistent players will have the opportunity to unlock a new chapter in the Doomguy's saga, taking place shortly after [Doom 64's] original campaign concludes. The Mother Demon you defeated in that outing had a sister, and since you've been messing up Hell non-stop, she tries to get rid of you by sending you away. If you can make your way back and take revenge, you’ll be rewarded with a bit of lore that fans of both series, new and classic, should enjoy.
So, there you go - once you defeat The Mother Demon, you'll have to take on her sister. You'll even get a little bit of extra lore after this as a reward. Are you as excited as we are about the release of DOOM 64 on the Switch? Leave a comment below.

I'm not big on Doom, but I have to say, when porting classic games to modern systems, throwing in a new level is the way to do it! Very cool!
(Hey other companies, do this!)
The Aunt Demon.
Excited is a big word, but at that price I can't leave it on the table so to speak.
I am ready to Raze Hell on 3-20-20!🙌🏽
I can't get enough of Doom, love the series. I've never played Doom 64 before so it'll be all new to me. Day one, can't wait.
As long as Doom 64 is here, this will keep me occupied until Doom Eternal.
Looking forward to this and Eternal!
@OorWullie
I played it before
Its pretty bloody dark, as in ramp up the brightness or you cant see shizz, dark.
Looks like won’t get to play this on March 20th. Since I pre-ordered Doom Eternal on the Switch, and since Doom 64 is a free bonus for pre-ordering Doom Eternal, and since Doom Eternal has been delayed on the Switch with no kind of release date, not sure when I’ll get to play it...
Highly recommend this game to anyone who hasn’t played it originally. It’s fantastic. A bit more puzzley though
Anyone who has played this game already, is there any reason there's no co-op?
Like, would having 2 or more players sequence-break anything? Or is it more-or-less like the first 2?
Interesting that they'd add a new chapter, but not multiplayer considering the other Doom games of the era had it.
This has the same price as a pint of strong ale without the hangover? I am intrigued...
Been going to town on classic Doom since the sale. Will be skipping Eternal till a sale drops but the classics never disappoint. Good on the studio for the extra content. Insta buy for this guy
@KitsuneNight Doom 3 is really dark too. I can only play that at nightime.
@90sRetroGaming Unless there's a Direct before then that includes a Doom Eternal release date. If so, it might become available to pre-order.
I'm confused. Did they designed new content from the scratch or they just put on the cartridge some extra they took out from first game cause of size? I'm leaning towards the second
On the same day, I certainly will rip and tear with Doom 64... And garden my flowers with Animal Crossing.
So is this a bonus level or campaign?
Need more chain gun action 🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫💪💪💪💪💪😎Grunt! Grunt!
@Coach_A don’t think it would break anything. The game is slower paced with more puzzles. Quite nice graphics with good lighting effects.
Waiting on the sale, can't wait.
@Coach_A They could always add that in later, or could do with something about the severs, putting the main focus on the new Doom's multiplayer over the classics
@90sRetroGaming My understanding is that the game will be sold stand alone on the Switch, while it is bundled on other systems as a pre-order bonus. On the Microsoft store on Xbox One the game is listed, but clearly marked as part a bundle only (Eternal), whereas on Switch is has a price and release date of 20/03/2020. If it was bundle only then it would not have a price.
On that note, it's a VERY reasonable price - this was my first N64 purchase back in the day and cost me £59.99, loved every minute of it and as other users have pointed out it's a slightly slower affair with improved lighting and atmosphere over the originals. While it didn't compare to Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, it was my next favourite shooter on the N64!
@KitsuneNight They've fixed the brightness issue with this release. Also, they've implemented new control schemes and fixed some sfx issues.
@SSGodLink
Excellent.
Even more reason to buy it now.
Wheres the wireless local play?
I am pretty excited to play this as it looks like it's the actual Doom 3 that fans were craving for. Not whatever Doom Cubed was.
@Heavyarms55 Just a heads up that 'chapter' is definitely going to be more than one level. Based on Doom's history It's likely more like 8 Levels (a mini Campaign). It's very generous of them for a port for £4 - clearly they love what they do and offer.
@OorWullie you will not be disappointed ( as long as they don't botch it. )
It's my favorite of the old school Dooms. I still play in my N64.
Motions control AND extra levels?!
I feel spoiled!!
@THENAMESNORM Yeah, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and DOOM 64.
Those were the 3 best first person shooters on the N64, or on any console at the time.
Though I also liked the Nintendo 64 versions of Hexen, the two Duke Nukem games, the two Quake games, the four Turok games, and Forsaken. (On that note, a shoutout to my favourite N64 third person shooters here: Jet Force Gemini and Operation: Winback)
Only Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M. was mediocre, and only South Park and Daikatana were rather disappointing. Did I miss any good first person shooters on the N64?
I hope the cheats from the N64 game are still in. I know they're in the Switch ports of Doom I & II, but they're missing from 3 for some reason.
Friggin sweet! That has me hyped to buy it!
New bit of lore that classic and modern fans will enjoy?so uhh will it connect Classic Doom and Modern DOOM?
@THENAMESNORM The Doom 64 pre-order bonus previously applied to all platforms. They never stated that the offer wasn’t coming to the Switch. It’s just now that this Switch delay messed everything up.
They do need to reassure, and make clear to people that it’s still a bonus for the Switch version. They’re not really keeping people in the loop as it pertains to this specific version of the game. It’s pretty frustrating.
@SKTTR Hexen was one I always wanted to try but I was put off by the reviews! Might try and track a copy down! The Turok games were great, I loved Rage Wars so hoping it gets the same treatment the first two games got with an HD remaster!
@90sRetroGaming yeah totally, they should make some sort of statement. I expect it’ll still be a preorder bonus for switch users but as you said they should clarify (also whether it will be available straight away or When eternal launches!) but it’s had a price for a while now on the eshop which is the only indicator that it will be sold separately too. And I’m stunned at how reasonable the price is! Hope they clarify the situation soon for yourself and others that need to know!
Part of me wishes these old Doom games were limited run physical releases like the Turok games.
Have physical for all the Doom games would be so cool...
(finds name of the article to had been profane; dislikes the name for its appearing to have had been profane)
@Danrenfroe2016 I meant to reply to your comment earlier but I've played Doom 64 now and you're right, I'm not disappointed. Top quality. It looks and plays superb.
@OorWullie yes. I am planning thru now. Doing all the secret exits and teething to get an the demon seals ( or whatever they are called ) for the laser gun. Can't wait to see the new level.
