With Streets of Rage 4 still on course for its vague '2020' release date, developer DotEmu has dropped another in its series of behind-the-scenes videos about the game's development. The latest video (below) is a six-minute look at the game's art from Lizardcube's Ben Fiquet and Julian Hguyen You.
Discussing how the pixel art of the original Sega Mega Drive / Genesis trilogy has informed the direction of this sequel, the pair also talk about the importance of using environments to drive the story and paying homage to the 16-bit games while doing something different. Looking at the sheer amount of beautiful background scenery, it's easy to see how this eagerly awaited game has soaked up so much development time.
The entire video is a must-watch for fans, although even if you're not we highly recommend skipping to just before the 4-minute mark for a glimpse of some exceptionally sexy parallax scrolling. We like that sort of thing a lot.
We're very much looking forward to hitting the Streets of Rage once again sometime this year. You? Let us know if you reckon it's gonna be a grand upper below.

This along with the Panzer Dragoon remake are amongst my most anticipated games this year
I have pretty low expectations for this game, but it keeps piquing my interest
This game appears to run at 18FPS
Release date please! X x x x x
@DinnerAndWine you might want to check your internet connection
I want this game on my Switch. Switch is perfect for this game. Streets of Rage of the go, best ever.
That looks utterly stunning. Not really my kind of game, but I’m now at least interested...
@carlos82
The game animation looks choppy and slow, not my internet connection bruh
I've been critical of the look of this game, but I took a look at a portion of this video to see some of the concept and alternate designs of Axel and Blaze, as some look like improvements to me. First, we see versions of them without the heavy black outlines(which I've pointed to as a main thing I don't like about the look of this) and I think they look way better that way, and they are there side by side in the video to compare. I think Blaze's legs are a good example of that, as I think they look really weird with the outline compared to the alternate versions without. Really, I think it makes a big difference. Second, I prefer some of the alternate designs. I like the Blaze design(third from left) with the red top, jacket on the shoulders, and dark boots. More than that, I think Axel looks much better without the shirt tied around his waist. I like the addition of his denim jacket, but the jacket along with the shirt always looked like too much to me. I'm glad to see they at least considered designs that are more in line with what I think are good updates from the old versions. Perhaps alternate designs will be in the game.
@DinnerAndWine The game should run at 60fps, but the animation will be much less than that.
@DinnerAndWine I was been sarcastic as it clearly isn't 18fps or choppy at all, the animation is smooth and it even looks to have impact whenever hitting an enemy that the original games had
I'm just gonna go ahead and say it: I don't like Axel's facial hair.
@DrDaisy You can buy the "clean shaved" DLC then.
Beautiful! I love 2d animation and beat em ups, we need more games like this.
Really looking forward to cracking some skulls!👏🏼
This looks like a response to all the comments about how they replaced the pixel art with an inferior art style. I hope they keep drafting the artwork because there are still quite a few poorly drawn frames and clumsy looking animations. I would like this to be good.
I'm more excited for battletoads but would hope for a golden axe version in this art style.
This looks awesome.
Thank you for sharing the video.
@nocdaes You're kidding, right?
I was already sold on this game, but didn't realize until now that this game is created by the guys who did the remake of Wonder Boy the dragon's trap. That game was awesome and it gives me even more faith that this game will be too.
I'm frustrated that there is still no release date for this game! hopefully we shall see something during summer maybe? I really want to get my hands on this, the animation and backgrounds look good but of course it has to play good too like the older games.
