One of the most talked-about upcoming games for rival platforms is Cyberpunk 2077, an open-world RPG from CD Projekt Red. We wouldn't have ever expected to see the game arrive on Switch, but the studio has once again refused to completely write off the possibility.
In a new interview with OnMSFT, the game's producer John Mamais was asked whether or not there were any plans for a release on Nintendo's console. He says that the game "might be too heavy" for Switch, but goes on to note that the team thought the same thing about The Witcher 3 - a game which has now been successfully ported to the hybrid machine.
Not as far as I know. Not yet. I don’t know if Cyberpunk 2077 would work on the Nintendo Switch. It might be too heavy for it. But then, we did put Witcher 3 on it and we thought that would be too heavy too but somehow we pulled it off.
Last year, Mamais was asked a similar question regarding a potential Switch port. At the time, he said, "I guess we'll see if we decide to put it on the Switch, if we can do it. Probably not".
Going by everything we've seen about the game so far, we'd be surprised to see it ever make it to Switch. Stranger things have definitely happened, though, so you never know.
Would you like to see Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch? Would you hold off for a Switch version given the chance? Let us know in the comments.

Just get a PS4/5 or a Xbox 4 this game! Its that simple. Switch is fantastic but this one lives through its visuals for sure. Dont wait, just buy it on the big consoles. The switch has so many great games,....but some of them are just (a tiny bit) better on the other consoles. just my 2 cents
Games like this i play on my PC
If they manage to get this game on Switch I'll believe that they've finally figured out how to download more RAM...
Currently playing Witcher 3 on Switch and would def get this on Switch as well. Probably get it regardless, but honestly after playing Witcher 3 on Switch, I could see this also being possible. CDPR game thrive on story and facial expression / dialog. Yes they look amazing, but all they have to do is repeat Witcher 3 - mute further objects and keep processing focus on characters. Static objects can be texture dropped and add dithering to lessen the rez and texture drop with little impact to the overall feel.
Edit - I’d actually argue that dithered, blurred and muted backgrounds would add to the experience for such a game. Noire / Mystery styles lend themselves well to such a design.
Of course we want it. For me razor sharp visuals do not necessarily add something super significant.
The bigger issue will be the storage. The XBO version of this game is reportedly 80 GB, which isn't going to fit on any Switch cartridge or on any SD card smaller than 128 GB.
They’ve not managed to get it on PS4 yet!!!
My hope is they delayed Cyberpunk because they want it on the switch.
A fool’s hope, sure, but let me .
I'm getting it for Xbox One X but I could see a Switch port doing well if they got it to work. For games like this I want to sit in my darkened game room for hours and play it on the big 4K TV in surround sound. I want the best quality console version I can get. I'd do PC but I can't bring myself to sit in front of a computer that long.
I don't have much of an interest in waiting a few years for it at this point.
My friend works at CDP and they denied Cyberpunk coming to Switch with the same argument (it’s too big).
This is what I have a PC for.
@westman98 But the Switch version won't be anywhere near the size of the Xbox version. Going by the sizes of other current gen Switch games we'd be looking at something in the 40GB range.
Game too heavy? Initialize stability update!!
@Indielink
The Witcher 3 Complete Edition is 40 GB on XBO and 28 GB on Switch.
A scaled-down Cyberpunk on Switch would still be very large - probably 50+ GB.
@westman98 I don’t think storage is an issue. The Witcher 3 was 50+ GB on PS4 and only 28GB on Switch. I’m sure Cyberpunk would be shrunk down significantly too.
@Moshschocker It's not visuals, hardware also governs stuff like, literally, everything else like AI, how many things can be on screen at once, loading times, draw distance, how big a level or world can be, etc. There seems to be this illusion here that hardware just means higher resolution when honestly it's not that visual fidelity is the reason why Cyber punk wouldn't ne on the switch, but that the lower quality that it would certainly have is because the switch isn't powerful to handle the game and the games engine that was designed for other better hardware.
Heh. I'm worried about how my aged PC will play it, and it's a good deal more capable than the PS4/Xbone. I can't even imagine trying to run this on the Switch.
Some games you really just need more powerful hardware for.
Honestly, I wouldn't want this game on the Switch, I think games like this are better on more powerful platforms. The Switch stands out better for games meant for something less powerful.
@Ainz I pledge my allegiance to you, Ainz Ooal Gown.
Totally unrelated but still necessary.
@westman98 Other current gen games like DOOM, Wolf 2/Youngblood, Divinity 2, or Vampyr come in right above or below the 50% mark compared to the other consoles. So there is some precedence for getting file sizes down.
Either way I don't think we're gonna have to buy large format card of this ever does come to Switch.
Oh man, don’t get my hopes up.
I Already have it pre-order on PC at GOG.
I can tag-team the Switch on the GO with something else like I did with JEDI+LM3 over the holidays.
Maybe if it gets compressed to 64gb it could work.
They should do a 32 bit pixelart version for Switch. Would totally buy that.
This might be unprecedented, but could they put this game on 2 carts? We'd need to pay more but could they do that like they used to with FFVII on the OG PS1? It had 3 cds.
@SmaggTheSmug My dad is Keanu Reeves and he confirms your comment 😋
I'm getting this on PC, gonna try to melt my 2080Ti with it
I just want it in VR, but that ain't gonna happen (unless somebody does magic and makes a mod)
It’s clearly too much for PS4/Xbox One. 2020 games are like those 2013 games, Bioshock Infinite, Last of Us and GTA V, where they really needed the next gen to do them justice.
Witcher 3 was 5 years ago. Cyberpunk is a different animal.
@Ainz on the topic of "downloading more RAM"... I wonder if it's still possible to add a chip into the cartridge to dramatically increase the performance capabilities, a la the SuperFX...
I am picking this up for my Xbox One X!
@Pirlo_ze_sniper I know it's an "uncle at Nintendo" situation, but I do have friends working there. But I am also aware of what an NDA is, so I don't bug them for juicy details (they say game journos hounding their social media is taxing enough) ;P
THIS WOULD BE THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE! My PC will struggle so much with it that I'd be more than happy to cancel my pre-order and go for an optimized port for Switch instead
How much can it be optimized for it to be stable? Either case if it does release on a Nintendo console it will be for the "Switch U" whenever that releases.
The Switch can technically handle anything, it's just a matter of how well Cyberpunk's porting process is done. I'm sure it'll do well, if the producers want to see it on the Switch, then hopefully a team of skilled people will do it good.
@able_to_think you can play PC on any TV and with any controller.. Xbox, switch pro, ps4 controllers work on them. There’s no reason anyone should continue to think PC has limitations when it doesn’t anymore.
Witcher 3 on Switch already lacks a lot of the visual polish that the other platforms have, to the detriment of the fantastic world that CDPR painstakingly built. Yes, I'm aware it's fully functional, but you can't deny Geralt's world is just not as beautiful as it is elsewhere.
I'm as big of a Switch fan as anyone else here, but I wouldn't want to play in a watered-down, muddy-looking Night City on it. However I'm willing to change my mind if Ninty develops a much beefier Switch Pro that won't require as many sacrifices on the visual front...
Launch window title for Switch 2.0 in 2021. I would be fine with that. Gotta say, playing Witcher 3 right now and it is pretty rough visually. Framerate is good, for sure. I just don't see Cyberpunk 2077 making it. Maybe OUTER WORLDS will change my mind....
@N64-ROX Not necessarily a chip but you can have external hardware that connects via USB and provides additional capabilities as long as the OS has the firmware to use it.
@Daniel36 Now that’s something I could totally get behind. In fact, the more I think about the idea, the more I’m digging it! Sir, I like the way you think!
I'll buy this for pc on release but if they make and pull off a Switch port I'll buy it as well.
I originally played Witcher 3 on my PS4 then when I got a new pc I got the pc version and am now playing through the Switch version.
CDPR makes great games and I'll support them all I can and especially buy a Switch copy regardless if I already own a PC copy of this game (but only make it if it will run at steady 30fps otherwise I say don't worry about it).
@Steel76 "Yeah, good luck with that. They had to delay the game, because the base models of Xbox One and PS4 are having problems running the game. And if those two can barely run the game..."
That isn't necessarily the case. The base Xbox One and PS4 is most of their console sales market, and they are going to want it to look as good as top quality Xbox One and PS4 games on the same machines(which could be the problem that requires the delay...getting them to look like the developers want). The Switch port wouldn't have the same standards. For instance, if the base Xbox One comes out at 720p dynamic like the witcher 3 was on switch, CD Projekt Red would have a major problem on their hands. On the Switch, that would be more acceptable (as it was with witcher 3). Anyways, I bet their target for the Xbox One is 900p and the PS4 is 1080p. That isn't exactly "barely running". You can go way lower than that on a handheld screen(even though it won't be great docked).
And it appears that the PS4 Pro version will be 4K as well, which isn't the case for all PS4 games (which suggests it isn't as demanding technically as it appears...just had good art and technical direction).
For those that propose to people to play certain games on other platforms they should be reminded that a vast majority of Switch owners only play games on Switch either because it is the only console they have or it is for them the only convenient way of playing games. Just a reminder.
I'd rather see switch optimized games, then ports of games optimized for heavier systems. Ports are good and all, however if they are not coming from the ps3 (early ps4) Era, then are they really worth porting to the system? Its not a magically device that can triple it's power on command. You know what you bought into, stop living the fantasy.
@Fido007 Summed up what I going to say pretty good. I mean, I didn't buy a 3DS expecting GTA IV on it.
I'd rather see the Switch get it's own games, made and optimized for it, like previous Nintendo portables had.
@Cosats While that's true.....people here frequently balk at PS4 owners who desperately want Switch-exclusive games on their system and say they should just buy the system. This is no different. You know when you buy a PS4 you aren't getting some games, and likewise when you buy a Switch you know the same that some games just aren't going to be ported due to cost, constraints, too many sacrifices, etc....
It would probably look like cyber punk 2001 on switch....
Cyberpunk 2077 is meant to be played on a high-end PC, PS5 or XSX, not on the Nintendo Switch. They got my favorite game of all times, The Witcher 3, running on the Switch. But just ask anyone, and they will tell you the experience is way subpar!
Literally everyone: My last gen game is too demanding for Switch
CDPR: /happy Polish porting noises
Everything is possible with time and sacrifices. Honestly, if it happened it would likely happen as one of the last Switch games, 2 years after the PS4/XBO release, when sales have flatlined, a point we’re a Switch port would boost sales.
I would much rather play cyberpunk on my switch sitting on the couch with my coffee next to me in portable mode rather than on my ps4 in front of the tv. I could honestly care less if the graphics are downgraded.
@BloodWolfe quick question man, do you have any bill's to pay?
Yes I have bills and a family. These games take me literally many many months to go through casually but I enjoy them.
Finally did my take on the situation..don't tease us just bring the game over!! https://youtu.be/uPa0-fBNSRU
