Update 2 - Wed 15th Jan, 2020 05:00 GMT: Nintendo's Japanese social media accounts and YouTube channel have now confirmed this as well. Above is a trailer showcasing the many costumes and features in the game.
Here's the costume list, courtesy of Gematsu:
New Costumes: “Rebellious Joker” (from Persona 5) for Itsuki Aoi, “Reuben Schwester” (from Fire Emblem: Three Houses) for Mamori Minamoto, “Cross Bravery” from (Etrian Odyssey Nexus) for Eleonora Yumizuru, and “Demonica Replica” (from Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey) for Yashiro Tsurugi.
Update - Tue 14th Jan, 2020 04:45 GMT: An actual in-game screenshot of Itsuki's Joker costume has now surfaced online (thanks, Nintendo Everything). It's also been confirmed other characters in the game will get costumes as well.
Original Story - Sat 11th Jan, 2020 05:55 GMT: Next week sees the release of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. If you didn't already know, the game is a slightly enhanced version of the original Wii U title from 2016. The latest iteration comes with new songs, a new story, and even new costumes.
Ahead of its worldwide release next week, something interesting has reportedly been spotted on the back of the Switch box art (via Amazon Japan). If the title wasn't enough of a hint, it's supposedly Joker's outfit from Persona 5. Here are some grainy images of the Japanese box art, courtesy of Twitter user @theprinceofiris:
Yep, after appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it looks like Joker will be making an encore in this enhanced Atlus title as a collaboration outfit for Itsuki. Next month he'll also be appearing in Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers.
At this point, it seems like Atlus is willing to give Switch owners everything related to Joker and Persona but the main games.

Since this is on the back of the box, this is more than likely real. Crazy. As much as I dislike how Persona has injected itself into everything and taken up all of Atlus' marketing, I'll bite the bullet here. TMS#FE is a good game that deserves as much of a push as it can get. If that means Robin Hood-ing itself(taking from rich, giving to needy), so be it. Can't wait to play this next week!
The leaker needs a better camera.
Please for the love of god release SMT or Persona games on switch, you are missing out on huge profits
@PBandSmelly
Seems like they're focusing on SMT V. I'm hoping it releases to massive critical acclaim and help people realize this is where Persona comes from and not the other way around. Demon collecting sounds like so much fun, but we'll have to wait. They always do this. Now it's our turn to have the next big Atlus game. On Switch and nowhere else.
@Silly_G
It's taken directly from the Japanese Amazon page.
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B07XF9R4TL/
@PBandSmelly mainline Persona games are unlikely to ever leave Sony, but I’m pretty sure SMT has a game confirmed for Switch.
@Silly_G
True true. With that said, it looks fairly convincing...
How many care about these stupid spin-offs anyway? Bring Persona 5 already
Atlus please uncensor this game or Nintendo who probably is responsible this time
Didn't Geralt oddly cameo in Daemon Ex Machina, which had a Spirit event? That started out as a book series, so there's no way (I mean that, based on the Iron Man/Goku comments) it can mean Smash, but it's just such an odd cameo.
Like, what's next, Dante is made playable in RE4? Or Bayonetta 3?
@GAMER1984dude At least they don't review bomb games for releasing on a system they don't own like other people 😏
@GAMER1984dude
And you have also not forgotten how ""some"" PS fans are "port begging" with games like Bayonetta 2 and Astral Chains (and that the latter received an attack on its review just because it was exclusive to the Switch)?, right?, oh, the irony, but well, that is not my decision, neither your decision nor theirs, it is the decision of the developers and publishers, and they will decide whether there will be a port or not from one game to another console, that simple.
Well, Regards, oh, and you are reported and I also have you ignored.
I'm sorry, I had to feed this troll, XD
@PBandSmelly ...You know we're getting SMT V right?
We should get more info on it this year.
@iLikeUrAttitude
Yup. It's the main series and the whole reason why Persona exists in the first place. Hoping that it becomes the next big thing for Atlus because people should want to respect where this franchise originated.
It would have been neat for the "Encore" version to really expand upon the game in a meaningful way, for instance by giving it additional chapters by linking to the world and cast of P5. But this seems just like an additional costume, which does little to nothing for me, despite my deep appreciation of P5.
It just feels like a missed opportunity to me, almost more like a cross-promotion, but I am probably reading too much into it ^^
While we wait for SMT V, this will be a fun game to play. One week to go!
@Ralek85
All that would do is further increase salt and rage levels over P5 not being on Switch and none of us want that... XD
@Octoguy
...As far as we know, anyway. There may not be evidence on the surface. For example, Astral Chain was confirmed to be paid for and published by Nintendo so it's their IP. They stated this publicly.
But regarding Persona, there just may be an NDA or something that prevents anyone from speaking about why it's PlayStation only for the main, numerical games. Likely so they can just be paid more. After all, Sony has been flaunting this series around as if it's theirs for quite some time. So who knows, really? Corporate doesn't care about us.
Honestly, I believe Persona 5 R is a timed exklusive. I can very well see it coming to Switch once all the main buzz for PS is over and sales start to drop. I still believe in Persona 5 R Switch Edition, maybe with some special features even, 2020.
I don't like j-pop games like these, but Atlus is stupid for not releasing Persona on Switch. They're gonna lose a ton of money, Sony fans have already played the game this gen, I don't see many double dipping.
@mesome713 Coming from a Persona fan since Persona 3; I can assure you that yes, we will double dip lol Persona 3 FES(Enhanced version of P3) and P4 Golden(Enhanced version of P4) shows that Royal will do quite well, hell prob even better than base P5 considering how well known P5 is.
@dimi PERSONA is a PlayStation exclusive series dating back all the way to '96 stop begging
@Octoguy That does not matter and actually they do since the prez of SONY japan said that "the series is important to the PlayStation" so that seals the deal right there
@mesome713 same old crap i always see "ATLUS hates money" FOH!
They are making money and they ain't stupid.
@Gr8-1 "PERSONA is a PlayStation exclusive series kiddo dating back all the way to '96 stop begging"
Monster Hunter was exclusive to PlayStation. Until it wasn't. Things often change.
@JR150 Well technically it is theirs since it has been with them since the 1st game.
The president of SONY Japan said that "PERSONA is important to the PlayStation" (if that is not direct i don't know what to tell these fools) and the idiots are still holding out hope (when it got stomped on like 4 times now) it is the equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome lol It's quite sad seeing people purposefully holding themselves back and begging for something that was not even promised or even uttered and don't know it's history and [most importantly] why it's best for exclusivity; and Yet they cry rivers in the desert for nothing.
@Gr8-1 "The only idiot here is you so i'd suggest you shut up kid"
That makes no sense. If you're going to label me as something, back it up. The worst come back ever is "No, you are".
And if I don't 'shut up'? Are you going to internet bully me? Seriously, I'm scared.
Finally, liking your own comments the second you post them is lame. At least wait five or ten minutes, so it doesn't look too obvious.
I'm about 35 hours into Persona 5 and I wish it would release on the Switch so more people can play the game. It's so good.
Phantom Strikers looks like one of the best Musou spinoff games since Hyrule Warriors.
@ZA_WARUDO an account made 4 minutes ago. How convenient.
Edit: Also, going back and adding a second 'like' to all your previous posts using your new alt account is just desperate.
@ZA_WARUDO Thank you, at least someone has sense here.
@Gr8-1 Enjoy talking to yourself on your alt account.
@PBandSmelly No they're not, they are doing great.
I’m playing persona 4 right now on my vita So I can get hyped for Tokyo Mirage. Persona 5 will come to Switch the 30 of February. 😜
I've been calling this since Scramble.
Atlus is going to attempt to port every concievable Persona 5 spinoff that isn't Dancing in Starlight, and make every possible P5 Collab happen in other Atlus and Sega games, but Persona 5 itself is basically never happening
The only way people who only own Switches will ever get to experience the original Persona 5 is by watching Persona 5 The Animation on the Hulu app lol
@JR150 why does it matter where Persona came from? Keep in mind Persona was first in the west, as Nintendo wouldn't allow them to be published outside of Japan.
@JR150 the wait for SMTV is killing me. How come almost 3 years have passed and we still know nothing?
I only hope it falls in the same ballpark as IV, more than Apocalypse; don't get me wrong, the gameplay additions in IV A aee awesome, but I really didn't like the tone going from "super serious apocalyptic ideological epic" to "bunch of anime kids doing stuff in said setting".
As much as I love anime, IV is one of my favorite games ever thanks to its "personality": brutal and uncompromising, in both gameplay and storytelling.
Let's hope V is like that!
@Gr8-1 People misinterpret that quote all the time
They only ever said that Atlus and Sony were great working partners and they want to continue maintaining a strong working relationship with the developer
At no point do they ever explicitly say that it's important that Persona remains PlayStation exclusive
“The IP has walked alongside PlayStation ever since the first entry in 1996,” he added. “I hope that we can continue walking together in the future.”
that's the quote
At no point does Atsushi Morita actually say that Persona being exclusive to PlayStation is important. They just acknowledged the fact that it has been on PS since the beginning and they hope Atlus can continue working with them in the future.
@mesome713 You would be very surprised.
Besides, who doesn't own a PS4? They sold more than the Wii.
Might be nice if they went and released some of the older SMT games on the eshop . Some of them have only been released as apps in the West
At this point Atlus is like: "ha-ha, look, you can't play p5! ha-ha!"
@JJ-87 oh, yeah, $300+ just for one game so Atlus wouldn't insult you
@JJ-87 No. The quote he's referring to was a quote he read too much into. Morita never said it was specifically important that Sony locks the Persona franchise to their platform
If they were that aggressive literally none of the spinoff titles like Arena, the Q games and Scramble would even be on non Sony systems, and stuff like Joker in Smash wouldn't even be a thing, because Cloud only got into Smash after Sony's stock in Square Enix dissolved in 2015
It's not like Sony purchased a stock in Atlus and locked Persona/SMT to their platform like the stock they had in Square Enix until 2015, which locked Final Fantasy to PlayStation throughout the early-mid 2000s
This is all Atlus' decision to make
@JJ-87 but if I buy it because Atlus insulted me that way, then I don't want to play anything else but p5. And 250 are money too, you know.
if there isn't a contract between Atlus and Sony stating mainline Persona games are PlayStation exclusive then Atlus is just leaving money on the table and they are a company that needs all the money they can get, Atlus really do struggle when it comes to money
@PBandSmelly You forgot SMTV was a thing apparently
It's ok, it happens to the best of us
Also Persona 5 Scramble really isn't that bad of a deal it actually interests me way more than Royal as someone who intends on buying both
I've had about enough of waiting for Atlus to give a Scramble release date. Why is their marketing so BAD?
@Mando44646 lack of money and resources and P5 Scramble Atlus normally releases games to the West 7 months after their Japan release
Well I never saw that coming
I that just on the Amazon Japan or all the others?
All these different games that include Joker yet no P5 for a Nintendo platform makes me wonder. Does Atlus want P5 on Switch? Can they even bring it over? Is there a contract preventing them from doing that? Is this a test to see just how much the Nintendo fanbase would want a Persona game? Maybe P5 is exclusive to Sony so it can't come over, but if they're planning P6, maybe they won't make it exclusive, at least not Sony-exclusive.
Hmm, it kinda looks like him.
@ObsidianEleven agreed with you with the stop begging. No begging for P5 when your not even a persona fan. That's what l always say.
@Discostew They don't want to give Nintendo the real Persona games, which l can understand. That's why the wannabe Persona fans are getting this unrealish Persona game called Persona 5 Scramble.
Just hope one day they will stop with these warriors type of games.
In case anyone is interested, the English cover has this as well:
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/enhvhs/english_cover_for_tokyo_mirage_sessions_fe_encore/
@Mr_Persona why? Warriors games are fun. Stupid, but still fun.
@JR150 Sad part is, that it actually might end up like that. Between port-begging for this, port-begging for P5, the former happening the latter obviously not AND the whole """"censorship"""" issue, it is kinda amazing how a beautiful game like this, and one of the few exclusive jRPGs around, can inspire this air of toxicity.
To say that this doesn't exactly shine the best light on the Switch installbase is putting it rather lightly.
@kopaka not everyone likes Warriors style games, I don't like them
@KBuckley27 that is not a reason to wish they will disappear, right?
Can't wait for this
@Gr8-1 That is true, love the rivers in the desert pun that was savage 😂
@ObsidianEleven PERSONA came out on PlayStation One
Monster Hunter came out on PlayStation 2
BIG difference so @Gr8-1 is right
@Ralek85 Yeah with the the toxicity on Twitter no less usually at a all time high
And I think the censorship issue is blown out of proportion it only effected a few games
@KBuckley27 At least someone gets it
@kopaka Insulted? Sounds like you're making stuff up there
@BlueBlur101 even if it was misinterpreted @Gr8-1 still is correct though
@Mr_Persona Would be a breath of fresh air since Dynasty Warriors 9 was a flop
@nekonathan17 so, showing you time after time so.ethi g that you want but unable to get isn't insulting?
@Discostew Highly doubt it though it has been joint at the hip for over 2 decades
@nekonathan17 that's why they should take a break with those games or just come up with new ideas for another game that isn't warriors type.
@nekonathan17 but still the P5 Scramble won't be that fresh. It might to you if you have never played FE Warriors or Hyrule Warriors and all the Dynasty Warriors. <I had to played all those games with a family member..ugh
@kopaka read my comments that l said before this post and see why.
@Mr_Persona I don't care why. At this point, I don't want even p5 on nsw. I want Atlus to stop teasing us.
@kopaka then just say that when you replied to me. So ik why you want this game and not just because it's Warriors type. But l have to say Atlus isn't teasing me, so idk how you people 100% really feel. I only know 70% of how you guys feel.
@nekonathan17 "PERSONA came out on PlayStation One
Monster Hunter came out on PlayStation 2
BIG difference so @Gr8-1 is right"
The big difference is that Persona, as much as it is loved, is still a relatively niche franchise. As of December, the entire Persona series has shifted 10.2M units, across four generations of hardware and six consoles.
The original PlayStation Monster Hunter games, before losing the series to Nintendo at the time, have shifted nearly 13.5M units, across one generation and two consoles. It was a system seller on a significant scale, a much more important game than Persona ever has been, and ever will be.
I love P3/4/5, but 10.2M units sold for Persona, over the course of nearly a quarter of a century, isn't breaking sales records.
Persona is not a Sony exclusive, nor do Sony own the rights to any of the games. If Nintendo came in, paid for the port development and offered a deal that made sense to Atlus financially, the game would happen. At some point.
A franchise being exclusive to a platform since that platform's inception, without any exclusivity deal in place, is a moot point. Final Fantasy VII anyone?
@ShadJV Really makes no Sense why Atlus keeps Persona with Sony. benefits Sony, but not Atlus. They would make a ton of money and increase the IP's fanbase and value by releasing on the Switch. Does anyone doubt Persona3, 4 or 5 on the Switch wouldn't sell millions.
@Silly_G Seriously, smart phones from the last 5 years have better cameras than whatever this leaker was using. This looks like one of those spy cameras you could get when you send away 2 proofs of purchase from your favourite cereal box.
Wow, that actually looks kinda bad on him. Like, joker manages to make it work somehow. This guy though...
I guess this is Atlas’s way of saying we won’t get persona 5, as this is the next best thing. I guess persona 5 might be locked behind exclusivity like astral chain
You people are really obsessed with this guy, aren't you? I don't understand the appeal.
@Kalmaro
Itsuki has softer facial features. In game you won't really notice it that much.
@DrDaisy
Me neither frankly since I've never played Persona but I know it's popular so hey whatever it takes for TMS to get some respect I suppose. XD
@JR150 I, think it's the hair, it just doesn't seem to match up well.
Joker's messy hair just seems to fit better.
@Kalmaro
Well Itsuki is the Director of this performance. He can't be looking all messed up, though I get what you mean. But like I said, you'll be fighting too much to notice. Almost enough to trick yourself into thinking you're playing P5 except green everywhere instead of red.
@JR150 Are they that similar? I'm still bitter that we get scramble but not the first game.
@JR150 I'd probably be much more interested if I was a Persona fan. After being disappointed with Persona 3 (it was an impulse buy on sale), I pretty much lost all interest in the series. When it was ported to PSP with the features I had mistakenly assumed were in the PS2 version, I said, "To hell with this. I'm not getting strung along on this crap."
Other stuff also happened, but I don't want to incriminate myself, so let's just say some people at a game store got hurt and leave it at that.
@Kalmaro
Well yes but actually no. No guns here. Itsuki actually plays more like Yu Narukami from P4 (haven't played but did research). Both use swords as their primary weapons and have Zio (electrical) attacks to use in their arsenal. So Itsuki is basically robbing from everyone and I love it.
And you and I both. If that game wasn't a canon sequel I might have tried it but I don't think I'll like it very much without context. >_>
@DrDaisy
Ouch. That being said, Tokyo Mirage plays a bit differently from the Persona games so if you're curious about this, give it a try.
@ObsidianEleven Counter-point: MW World sold the best, as did P5 in their respective series.
Atlus is giving us everything except the actual game (Persona 5) at this point.
Joker in Smash, P5 Scramble, Joker in Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but for some reason they won’t let us play the original game that they have been adding spinoffs and cameos to on the Switch.
I know some people are kindof mad that Persona 5 has been getting so much rep, leaving the other Personas in the back light, but honestly I think Joker is one of the best-designed protagonists so far. The other Persona Protags are very bland looking, but Joker has become such an iconic design in such a short time.
@patbacknitro18
Huh. If we're going by looks and looks alone I find the Persona 2 protagonist Tatsuya Suou to look cool in his simplicity. Not too busy just a simple slim design.
I'm going to set aside my extreme annoyance with the lack of P5 on Switch, because I do want this game.
But I'm not even considering that Warriors spinoff until and unless we get Persona 5 on Switch. Don't give me that "it can't be done" nonsense. Witcher 3 is on Switch.
@Heavyarms55
It's not that it can't be done. Atlus just doesn't want it done. They would've done so by now especially with Joker getting into literal SUPER SMASH BROTHERS. But now it's far past that hype train so it'd be too late. There's likely some sort of undisclosed exclusivity deal between Sony that we just aren't aware of. It isn't like Bayonetta and Astral Chain in which we know that Nintendo openly admits to paying for those games so they're Switch-exclusive.
At any rate, we'd be lucky to get chibi remakes of Persona 1 and 2 at this point. P5 Warriors is a legitimate canon sequel meanwhile and Switch owners won't have any context which sucks for us because major plot elements of the first game might just get glossed over. If it was its own original story, then I could forgive it. But the fact that it's canonical and only people with a PS4 will understand just outright sucks. It seems as if they're focused entirely on TMS#FE and working on SMT V, which I'm personally excited for since I've been looking for a good monster collecting game that involves death and destruction. In the end, TMS is our (not)-Persona that Switch owners get and we get the real Shin Megami Tensei title. That's what Atlus wants, so I say so be it. So long as SMT V ends up better than P5 and drowns it out next.
@JR150 I don't really buy that they don't want to do that or that it's too late. But I can understand the rest of what you are saying.
I literally have no excuse not to play it. I literally have the PS4 version sitting in my PS4 right under the screen I am looking at while typing this. I just would rather have it on Switch. And yes, I know how silly that is.
@Trajan "Counter-point: MW World sold the best, as did P5 in their respective series."
More of a statement, than an actual counter-point? But, I'll throw another statement out there. So did Resident Evil 5, all the fifth iterations/generations of their respective series!
Back to Persona though, specifically P4.
On the PS2, the biggest selling game console of all time, Persona 4 shifted 0.82M copies, with an attach rate of about 0.5%.
On the PS Vita, which didn't sell quite as many units as the PS4, Golden shifted 1.25M copies. Vita sales numbers are sketchy, estimated between 10-15M. Taking the estimate at both ends, the attach rate for Golden is between 8.3% and 12.5%.
Evidence to suggest a Persona 5 game could actually sell better as a portable title?
Damn, and I really wanted to NOT want to buy this game again despite really wanting to.
@ObsidianEleven I don't know. P5 made the series popular, but it was always niche. I'll be curious to see how P6 does.
Aw yeah baby! Strange Journey soldier and Hero from Etrian Nexus! This game really is a celebration of all Megami Tensei with Fire Emblem in the mix because we also have Anette Mamori! Buy it everyone!
Strange Journey I recognized right away, crazy to see that outfit here.
@Trajan I wouldn't say 5 made it popular. The series has been a popular one long before 5, 5 just made it popular with the mainstream audience.
Ok I'll bite. I love all those games!
I might have to trade some games or an organ to get get it though. January is a lean month.
That’s pretty neat. This was my favorite turn based RPG in years (especially now that I just don’t have the drive for them like I used to) and I’m really hyped to replay it. Maybe I’ll go for all of the achievements/studio awards this time.
@GAMER1984dude
I just now saw this so I'll throw my two cents. Atlus is third party, their games aren't tied to any particular console. On the other hand Nintendo characters and games are first party and it'll be a cold day in hell before they allow them to leave. Hence why we will not see Uncharted or Last of Us on switch since Sony owns Naughty Dog ergo first party.
Nintendo and Atlus are trying to sell this game off of Persona 5 which is a desperation move which is pathetic shows nobody wants this game
@DrDaisy so did you beat up people at a games' store cause of Persona or did I miss something there? 😅
Just curious.
@clvr That's putting it mildly, but yeah. It was because of Persona, specifically the third game.
@DrDaisy well, I don't have the details so I don't know the whole story, but it doesn't sound like something I'd be proud of on the internet 😅
@clvr I used to tell people about my violent ventures on the GameFAQs message boards because I knew no one would believe me, but then I started getting modded all the time. I guess the mods were on a power trip or something, trying to put me in my place. They won't be so smug when I eventually put them in theirs.
@DrDaisy duuuuuude, the hell is wrong with you? 😅 Lol
What do you mean you're gonna put the mods in their place? 😅
@clvr We're on a "need to know" basis, and you don't need to know.
