Today sees the launch of Mad Games Tycoon on Nintendo Switch, a title which allows you to build your own game development studio from scratch and take on the wildly exciting industry we all know and love.
You'll start out as an indie studio, slowly working your way up to becoming a major developer firing AAA games out of the door like it was nothing. You'll need to manage day-to-day logistics like hiring new programming talent and renting office space, and then develop games your loyal fanbase will want to play. You'll even have to think about building your own game engines, cutting licensing deals, and maybe even creating your own next-generation console.
Interested? Here's a feature list:
- Start a Game Development Studio and develop and market games in any combination of over 15 genres with nearly 200 sub-categories
- Explore over 40 technologies (e.g. graphics, sound, control) and create your own game engines as a basis for your games, or license them to other development houses
- Produce a next-generation game console that puts everything else on the market to shame
- Set up your studio - from the proverbial backyard garage without heating - to modern skyscrapers with server farms for your grand-scale MMO’s
- Expand your workforce - hire both “green” programmers and development legends - then staff departments like testing, marketing, sound, and graphics with the best people
The game's available on the Nintendo Switch eShop as we speak for £35.99. We liked the little nod to real-life consoles in the trailer - did you spot the Mintendu 3SD?
A simulation game you can really relate to? Think you've got what it takes to build your own studio? Let us know if you'll be getting this one in the comments below.

Looks promising, but I'm not paying AU$60ish without a cart, mate.
Game Dev Tycoon on mobile cost only a minute fraction of that for a similar concept (with similar production values).
Grab PetitCom4 from the Japanese eShop, and live the dream!
I could see how this may appeal to some folk. Not me. I like the premise but I’d want to make some actual mini games. Plus I can’t imagine this being fun on the Lite, tiny text being a bit of an issue for me. Still, original idea and the more Switch games the better...good luck with it.
So basically Game Dev Tycoon which has been on mobile for ages lol. Unless this has a lot more options (which it doesn't look like it) I don't see the reason in buying this.
I'd buy Game Dev Tycoon again on my Switch if it could be ported over. This seems too similar to it with a heftier price tag.
I own it on PC and it was too tough to get into.
Can I... can I make Flappy Bird?
Why is it almost 3 times the price as the steam release?
Mind you Game Dev Tycoon was a copy of Game Dev Story by Kairosoft which is available on the Switch

Over priced for what it is.
So it's...
Game Dev Tycoon? From PC like... ages ago?
But more expensive. Damn. I would buy GDT again.
I bought up the game as had a bunch of gold points sitting idle, and I played the caca out of this on PC.
@Timppis @Swizze @Silly_G - The game is similar in idea to Game Dev Tycoon (which also own on PC), but it is far more varied and much more for you to actually do (Quick edit: haven't played Game Dev Tycoon in a long while though, so can't say for it's recent updates). You can fully design your business, create your own stock to self publish games, deal in the nitty gritty with specialised development teams to focus on Graphics, Sound or good old Game Design. It also lasts a lot longer (depending the time frame you choose, slow and from 1980 is a good long haul). It is in my opinion one of the better management sims out there, at least it was for the £12 Steam has it for.
@SetupDisk - Technically yes, but it will mainly be in name only and whatever design choices you make for it. It's pretty simple when it comes to what the end result of the game you are able to see is. It's more so down to the numbers, scores and sales figures. Quite addictive, but if you want a proper game maker there is that RPG Maker game coming out (supposedly) in December - That should be good fun, at the least with the free App to play other peoples games.
However with all that above said, the Switch version (I assume PS4 and XB1 suffer the same) has some bugs. The numbers don't show up easily for your games design points, so you have to go out of your way to check a development report or hope it is good numbers which you can see when you release the game. Normally it would show under the development time bar.
Though the biggest problem is the 12 character limit for game names. This is a big oversight, especially when the game claims you can have a 500 character limit. It just reverts back to 12 characters if you go over. It's pretty disheartening and hope they patch that quickly. Considering Eggcode has moved on to brighter pastures I do wonder.
Also no clue why it's £35.99 compared to Steam's price. From what I can tell nothing has been added or changed since it's last update back in 2017(?), though the file size is 220mb or so larger, which seems lousy if that is purely for control input data and the few extra dialog screens for tutorial for said control inputs.
Why is this game so expensive you asked?
Play this game and you will know why. This game even teaches you how to add micro transaction to games and ripped off naive gamers.
