Two previously-unseen characters set to appear in the new, upcoming series of the Pokémon anime have been revealed today.
The first is a brand new professor known as Professor Sakuragi. Serebii reports that the new prof works at Sakuragi Laboratories in Vermilion City, a city from the original games' region of Kanto. Ash and his new companion Go will kickstart their adventure here before heading out on a journey which appears to span across every single Pokémon region introduced so far.
Interestingly, this professor is not the same as the one set to appear in Pokémon Sword and Shield, despite the anime usually featuring key characters from the games. Professor Magnolia is the resident know-it-all in Sword and Shield's Galar region.
Alongside Professor Sakuragi, Koharu has also been revealed (as seen in the image at the top of this article). She is the 10-year-old daughter of Professor Sakuragi and is a childhood friend of Go. As you can see from the image, she's accompanied by Yamper as her partner Pokémon.
This series of the anime is shaping up to be one the most intriguing in a long while; perhaps Ash's recent Pokémon League success will finally see a huge shake-up for the show's plot?

Why even bother mentioning age in a show like Pokemon where people do not age?
Like I get that it's just the kind of series that it is, same as western shows like Simpsons or other anime like Detective Conan, but... I feel like you should just kinda pretend age isn't a thing because mentioning it implies time passes - when it very clearly doesn't.
Like imagine if it actually got brought up in the show: "Ash, how old are you?" "I'm 10, why?" "How did you collect all the gym badges in 7 regions, and the Orange Islands, in less than a year?"
error Ash.exe has stopped working
@Heavyarms55 Simple: He's a time traveller who never ages because time stops for him.
That girl looks way older than 10.
I'm kinda disappointed they didn't just use Professor Magnolia from the games instead of creating another generic-looking professor.
@Heavyarms55
The great surprise in the season will be that the characters won't be eternal preteens anymore the curse has been broken!
It's quite odd though... We know that you definitely can die in the anime, but can you die of old age? 🤔
Ontopic: I don't know about these new characters... They're acceptable but I think they look a little bit too bland. If they are going to create new characters, go all out with it and make them memorable
Some random dad is a professor this time. I actually kinda like how normal he looks.
This is either a strategy to market both Pokémon Go and Masters over Sword and Shield, which is kinda understandable, due to the childish nature of the anime and the Switch games auto-selling anyway.
Or they want to avoid another plot fiasco like Best Wishes, SM was easy to write for, and in XY they've outdone themselves.
Either way I find Galar has been done dirty.
@danemord Well since time does not appear to pass, I would say no. But this is just one of many plotholes that are kinda just stuck in the suspension of disbelief that is required of this kind of show.
Like I said, I get it, it's just how the show is. It's just that, that's why I think you should avoid mentioning details that draw attention to those issues.
@Kriven Honestly, that would be a good explanation - if humans on the planet just age FAR slower, and a year on the planet is FAR longer that would explain a lot.
@Kriven
What, really? Lord forgive me for saying this, but look at that 10 year old's chest. Maybe this is just a really bad and unrepresentative image of her, maybe her clothes are just incredible baggy, but she's got at least the upper half of an hourglass figure. 10 year-olds do not look like that.
@Heavyarms55 Maybe it's a cultural thing? But the age of characters in Pokemon is often mentioned, despite having no impact on anything whatsoever. I personally don't understand it either.
If you played Red and Blue, it was definitely supposed to be Earth at one point. Space Shuttle Columbia, Mew being found in South America, etc. That plan seemingly changed over time, though.
Anyway, yay for Yamper getting limelight!!!
Like an oppai 10 sure
@Kriven
Based on the art here, she's got the body of an adult. As stated by @BLD, it's possible her clothes are just baggy in a specific way, but she's weirdly busty-looking. Bart Simpson is a more accurate cartoon representation of a 10-year-old, and he's yellow!
The Pokemon characters seem to hit puberty years before real people do.
@JorisD
The rest of her body and face are drawn exactly like every other human in the Pokemon world, be they 15 or 50.
And nowhere was it even implied that I was offended, but thanks for playing.
This updated art style is actually my favorite out of many years of watching the anime, including XY's. It has more "compact" proportions like SM's, still with more minimalistic lines, but with less surrealist facial design, which was personally off-putting, especially in screenshots. I also love the idea of traveling and seeing different regions, obviously since I've wanted the games to do that again since 2nd Gen, so I'm excited!
Speaking of more compact proportions, their depiction of Yamper actually makes me really like him! I know it's just the angle, but the shorter body length, and different smile expression make him appear so much better. He just looks like a cartoonish jelly bean in the in-game models...
@TriforceBun perhaps, until you take something else into account; female breasts can start growing as early as 8 years old keep growing til the early 20s so 10 year olds with tits are a thing. hell, the youngest know girl to give birth to give birth did so at the age of 5

@Shadowmoon522
Even if that's all true... what are the chances that the person who drew the picture researched that? That isn't really what this is all about.
Am I missing something, or did everyone complaining about Magnolia not being present forgetting that this professor is set in the Kanto region, And not the Galar region which Professor Magnolia resides? She is still going to be in the anime, we'll just have to wait till Ash reachs the Galar region.
@bagajr This guy lives in Vermilion. For all we know he is just Ash's excuse to go to Galar with his daughter and Go. And they might meet Magnolia there.
@Heavyarms55 @Octane The age is a cultural thing, much like a lot of Japanese games mentioning the blood group of their main characters despite it seeming odd in the UK.
Personally I dont have a problem with Ash not aging, there are tonnes of characters that are meant to keep continuity that just never age, I dare say the Simpsons kids are far older than Ash at this stage. Thomas the Tank engine should be scrap metal or recycled tins of beans.
As for the new characters.. they're fine. Nothing too special.. though the young girls ponytail looks like it's made of vinyl.
I believe this series is not the real galar region series. It's just a set of filler episodes to celebrate the franchise and build momentum to the real chapters in Galar.
@DanteSolablood You're right about the blood group thing, never understood that either!
@aznable Huh?
@WagnerDDS An set-up?
I got the feeling she will end up being another female protagonist.
We’re going back to the professors having thier shirts buttoned up 😤
@BLD - You don’t remember May, do you?
@BLD What you're thinking of as her breasts is actually her entire torso. Her top curves out just before her waist. You and some of the other posters have her proportions mixed up. She has a small body compared to her her head but you guys are thinking of her having the head to body ratio an adult would have and it's messing up how you're seeing the pic.
@Octane In Japan, blood groups are seen like how we see star signs. There's an idea it defines the person's personality type.
Why is this article speaking as though the anime has been creatively stagnant?
Sun and Moon had some great writing (to the point that it was genuinely also enjoyable for adults), and the updated character designs brought it into line with modern anime. Every time one of these articles is written I feel like the writer isn't actually familiar with recent seasons.
Sun and Moon is on Netflix, so it's widely available if anyone wants to give it a go.
Quite "mature" for ten. But hey. It's the hormones in the milk, they say!
That said, I also like the artstyle.
That's just Ringo from Puyo Puyo.
I read the word Kanto, I immediately lose any and all interest I might have had in this.
I actually have another problem with this entirely. Actually, make it another 10,000 problems.
I don't see myself liking this new professor as he brings up a few....rather unpleasant memories from FMA about a certain douchebag that many of us want to destroy.
This guy honest to goodness reminds me of Shou Tucker a bit too much.
I keep wanting to call him professor oak or a relative of his.
Age really doesn't matter in Pokemon. Can you really even tell how old someone is based on how they are depicted in the cartoon? I'm bummed that Sword and Shield doesn't include all the old school Red/Green/Blue era Pokemon - Where's Bulbasaur? Where's Squirtle? The new Pokemon are cool (found some photos on https://gamesref.com) but they look a little weird
Although the art style is different, we cannot hold ourselves to watch on mobile devices. Of course, tons of apps like AnYme from APKLoop available to showcase these shows after the release. I cannot wait to see it.
