Remember last week when an episode summary for the Pokémon anime revealed that a world exclusive announcement was coming? Well, it's arrived, and we have mixed feelings.
On the one hand, the announcement just turned out to be an announcement for yet another announcement. Good grief. On the other, though, the little pieces of info we do have sound pretty tasty.
Essentially, the announcement reveals that the latest series of the Pokémon anime is set to be fully revealed on 29th September. The series will coincide with the upcoming games, Pokémon Sword and Shield, which launch on Nintendo Switch this November.
Although we'll have to wait until then to learn more, Serebii reports that the new season won't only be set in the new games' region of Galar, but in all regions featured throughout the series so far. Pokémon from each of these regions will also be featured.
If the anime visits each region, does that mean the games might do the same? We really wouldn't expect that, but what an incredibly lovely surprise that would turn out to be.
Are you a fan of the Pokémon anime? Excited for a brand new season? Let us know in the comments below.

"If the anime visits each region, does that mean the games might do the same?"
Hahaha....no.
Oh cool! My sister has been catching up with the latest Sun and Moon episodes recently - she'll be happy with this news!
I don't want ugly anime style like Pokemon Sun / Moon again. 🙁
Hopefully some hunky dudes on some episodes like Prof Kukui or Kiawe or Lt Surge or Shirtless Brock.
The fact the anime will show every region instead of focusing on Galar may also simply mean that the new region and games are so empty and uninspired that the anime team couldn't manage to build a whole enganging season around it.
Yes yes, I'm being too pessimistic, but someone gotta balance your "maybe all regions will be in the game" kind of optimism~
@BakaKnight or they're doing it to promote Pokemon Masters since that's the latest cash cow. It makes sense to revisit the old gym leaders who appear in the game since some havent been around for 20 years
Up Next: Nintendo to hire Andrew Wilson to release all subsequent regions as paid DLC over the course of three season passes
Is this so we'd know who won't make it to Galar? Guess Ash now has a new reason to leave them Pokemon with Professor Oak. "Sorry guys, ya'll not allowed in Galar so I'll be bringing only Pikachu with me"
If the anime visit every region, the game won’t... or the no national dex thing make even less sense...
@w00dm4n So... they'll release an anime season to promote the F2P game at the same time of the new main line games?
That sound really worse, as if both the anime and the new games are just an ad for Pokemon Masters.
...it..it kinda scare me however how much possible that can be...
That’s pretty neat but I’m worried that means Galar won’t get nearly as much attention as all the other ones did
"If the anime visits each region, does that mean the games might do the same? "
Lol these games dont even incude all pokemon
This feels like another mini series. I dont mind it, but everybody gonna wanna know how the gym leaders’ personalities are like and how they sound, how the anime does UK proud as Galar in the anime, and lets not forget about the Scottish girl protagonist... She better be Scottish.
@BakaKnight : That sounds about right.
Or perhaps they're saving the National Dex and all the good stuff for SharpSword and SturdyShield, coming in late 2020.
@N1ntendodo : TPC won't bother casting real Brits for this, though it would be great if they did.
But forcing the current cast to give us the Dick van Dyke treatment is the more likely outcome.
So... It's just like Generations?
If they didn’t do this they’d run the risk of showing a “forbidden” Pokémon in a show set just in Galar which would make Gamefreak angry and antagonize fans.
I'd be excited for an entirely separate anime featuring all regions, something like Generations but much more fleshed out. Doing it in the main series looks like Galar gets shafted in favor of rehashed content, and we have to deal with effing Kanto AGAIN.
@Anti-Matter Dude, are you even into guys?? This is the sorta stuff that would get me punched in the face irl.
That's cool. I really just want a different protagonist. I'm tired of Ash. It'd be one thing if he grew over the course of the show, but it's pretty bizarre to have a series that maintains some sense of history and internal consistency while also never allowing the protagonist to get any older.
@nessisonett You should move to a safer place if talking about hot, shirtless guys would get you punched in the face! Sounds like a toxic environment.
Most likely this means that characters from various previous regions will be making a return.
My main hope is that the return the the quality of production they had during gen 3/4 and gen 6 of the anime. Gen 5 and 7 were pretty bad and the first two mostly only hold up while wearing Nostalgia goggles.
So are you sticking with that “world exclusive” expression? You sure?
@nessisonett
Well, why not ? 😉
I have interest with hunky dudes.
The dudes i like to see from Pokemon animes such are Kiawe, Prof Kukui, Lt. Surge, Shirtless Brock, Bruno (Gym Leader),Team Rocket Tyson, Team Rocket Attila.
Some interesting characters but not hunky such as Nate (Black / White 2), Sawk, Lucario, Jimmy (Kenta in Japan), Team Rocket Butch (Kosaburo).
@Ralizah Oh man, going to Catholic school was a fun time especially when I’m not the sorta guy that can hide his interest in the man bod hahahaha.
Nice to see at least the anime hasn’t decided to forget hundreds of species and the National Dex.
Regardless of your umm... preferences... This probably isn't the place to discuss them.
I wonder if it'll be like the few epsiodes when Ash and the Alola gang went to visit Kanto (Pallet town, and a few gyms, including Brock and Misty).
I would love to see Dawn and May & Max... This is when I got into the anime. And my favorite partners of Ash
Maybe the anime could be Lillie's adventures (the ending of Sun/Moon games) and her road to be a Pokemon trainer.....
Unpopular opinion: I actually really like the artsyle in Sun/Moon. It's very fluid and fun.
So... if the anime is going to visit every region... then there's no reason Game Freak absolutely HAS to release the games right now. The biggest excuse for not delaying I've seen people give is because they have to sync the game releases with stuff for the show and TCG and whatnot. If the show is doing all regions it'd make sense to start in Kanto at the beginning. For the TCG I'm sure they could easily throw together a nostalgia bait gen 1 pack to go with it, and that gives Game Freak the time they need to actually make Sword and Shield properly.
It seems really unlikely that the games would visit every region. If they did it would be even harder to justify every Pokemon not being available.
So essentially, the anime will have all the Pokemon but the game won't.
Can we get an F for our boy Ash
"So, here's that script for the female lead for the Galar seasons of the Pokémon show."
"..."
"...well, how's it look?"
"Oh no...she's Scottish."
"And?"
"We're, uh, gonna need editing time."
"Okay, okay, we'll buy the editors time and just have Ash trek through the other regions. But make Scottish Lass happen!"
A common theory is that the time frame for Pokémon game production is dictated by the time frames of the anime and other merchandise. Well if you think about it, an anime that always covers all of the regions doesn't require a game to match up to it every year or so. Makes me wonder, perhaps this is their response to the natdex crisis. Remove the largest timing factor and game freak would have significantly more time to make games/not skip out on content
Just a theory though
@pokefan500
Nintendo still wants Gamefreak to release Pokemon games on a regular basis because their games are massive sellers for Nintendo hardware. The anime and trading cards have never been the main dictating factor of Gamefreak's release schedule (though they do play some role).
The best that can happen is that Gamefreak will patch in non-Galarian Pokemon into Sword/Shield in 2020 (Home doesn't launch until early 2020 to begin with), but that's assuming Gamefreak is going to change their mind regarding how Pokemon are transferred between games from now on.
@pokefan500 All they needed to do was to put the remaining Pokemons in a DLC (or hire more people). They're purely cutting costs.
@Anti-Matter I should think that his bewilderment is based on the fact they're cartoons, but each to their own!
I wouldn't mind not seeing Ash tbh. Since they're changing the game so much, why not the show?
Lots of folks making some incredible leaps based on very scant information, lol. I say we wait for September 29th to get more information
This is how I'd want the games to end up, expansions for Sword/Shield set in other regions but I know that's very unlikely.
@pokefan500 Maybe. Maybe not. All I know is, they really should have just considered using post-launch updates to possibly mitigate the issue.
Pokemon Company: Let's travel across all the different regions to show people the Pokemon they WON'T F--KING GET in the actual Sword/Shield games!!
On the one hand it's a shame that Galar won't get it's full time in the spotlight (especially as it's set in the UK) as someone else said, it's probably so they don't have to hire lots of british voice actors lol
This could also be really interesting though, the anime definitely needs a shot in the arm, the last two series have been rubbish in my opinion, this has the potential to be great if they have Ash regularly rotating his team from all the different regions. I would love for Jessie and James to find/reclaim Arbok and Weezing when they go back to Hoenn and dare i even dream it, for Ash to finally go back and find his Pidgeot and Primeape, but that will never happen haha
One other thing i'm wondering, i always thought the reason why supporting characters always caught so few Pokemon each series was so that they didn't have to animate too many 'mon, won't this plan create a huge workload for the animators ?
The anime will still be bad like it has been for 20+ years, but neat, I guess?
As for the people optimistically/stupidly hoping this means all Regions will be in the game, remember that there's no National Dex and they flat out said not every Pokemon will be in the game - if every Region were in the game, those things wouldn't make sense. Unless they plan on ruining the games further by making expensive, paid DLC for each Region, which would just further cement SwSh as the hands-down worst main series Pokemon games ever.
let's hope they abandon the terrible animation style in the Sun/Moon seasons
S-S-Serena...?

@oggiV F
@Anti-Matter Gimme kosaburo and yamato NOW
When Super Shield and Super Sword are released it will include the other regions.
If this anime going to have every Pokemon it better at least let the Porygon line have a moment(no matter how short or long it is)in the spotlight or I'll be very disappointed.
bring back old friends esp Dawn & Serenaaa
